Circuits 40:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

Well it's been a while since I did one of these and my body seems to be constantly reminding me of that fact today (Tues). I was hoping that in my time away from circuits I would have gotten better at skipping and press-ups, but I haven't. On the plus side, I am sure I can make out a six-pack popping through.

Running 30:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

Up to circuits with Gracie and a loop home with Mike and Oli.

Running 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia Pivot

Rach drove us out to Fairholmes and I went on a good run up Margery Hill and Lost Lad. Cut across the moors a few times for some terrain training. Gorgeous sunny day, felt good and enjoyed it.

(rest day)

Couple of days off should sort me out. Had a day trip out to Castleton and walked up Mam Tor with Grace, her sister Jasmine and her boyfriend Craig. Then went in Blue John Cavern and then had a big lunch in the Fox House.

Running 1:01:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Parked up at Damflask and ran up to Dale Dike and Agden Reservoirs and back down to Damflask. Felt good on the flat but dead on the hills. Left leg stiff as, so had to stop and do some stretching (1minute).

Running 1:37:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

With Mike, Rob and Oli round Loxley and stuff and with a few decent hills thrown in. Would have declined a run this long if I'd known in advance it was going to be this long, but I felt ok (considering), if a little stiff. Pretty chuffed to get an answer to Saturday's crossword with Oli half-way up Spoon Lane. That took my mind off the hill.

Orienteering race (JK Relay) 33:01 [5]
shoes: adidas swoops

Dropped from 3rd to 4th on last leg. Shoe choice cost me dearly as I stuggled to stand up, and finishing in a blizzard was unpleasant to say the least (with map covered in mud). But I'd love to know where Scott got past me cos I never saw him. Hit the first few well and settled into running across the fields. Looked behind and saw no-one, so took it steady in the next bit of forest. Small error on number 9, but happy that I was in 3rd so cruised home across the fields. Lost a bit of time crossing the 2metre high deer fence (cos the gate was padlocked), although I should've just gone round the end of it! Lacked a bit of fight, but I wish I'd known I was in a fight. Weird to find out I'd lost a place.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: adidas swoops

Note

I've worked out where Scott got me. We had the same 6 and the same 9, but he was 2 minutes quicker than me between them on a shorter gaffle. Rest of the course was basically the same. Shit hey.

Orienteering race (JK Long) 1:31:30 [5]
shoes: adidas swoops

8th place, 4th Brit. Good but not great. Dunno where the planner thought he might catch out the elites with that course. Leaving my o-shoes at home over the JK cost me more time than not having a compass! (cos of the mud). Ran quite strongly the whole way, except Oli got me on the uphill finish bit grrrr. Good effort. 2 mistakes on number 8 (leaving 7 and in the circle) and couldn't find the pit at number 11 (again, was in the right place) - so lost about 2.5mins. 89 was the time to do as I was at the back of the pack, with a huge gap behind me.

Orienteering race (JK Middle) 36:36 [5]
shoes: adidas swoops

12th place, 7th? Brit. Bit of a poor showing really. Still, I nailed most of the course well so happy with those bits, just annoying when mistakes of 1-1.5mins at 6 and 16 make it all a bit pointless. Both times I was in the right place to begin with (i.e. within 10metres of the flag), but lost confidence and ran off (which makes it even more frustrating). My navigation was fine without a compass, and I should have been more confident in it. Running well though. Nicely tucked in behind a Sheffield posse.

Event: JK 2008

Orienteering race (JK Sprint) 14:48 [5]
shoes: adidas swoops

7th place, 3rd Brit. Ran pretty good and got a pretty good result, but never quite on top of things and made lots of 5-10 seconders. Lost some time cos of slightly unnecessary hiding of controls (eg. wall end which isn't actually on the end but tucked behind the wall, or path crossing which isn't in the middle of the path crossing but tucked behind a thicket which you can't see from your approach). Still, I did some really good legs and kept the time losses to a minimum.

Nice little loosener with Gracie in rather inclement conditions.

Good job I didn't make any silly bets with Baker at the start of the year.

Running intervals 20:00 [5]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

3x5mins (2mins rec) on roads with a net downhill. Felt fine.

Running 20:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

I bumped into Hargreaves and Furness out running (seperately) on Crookesmoor road and we stopped and had a chat. As I ran off, I tried to calculate the odds of that event occuring but I'd never dealt with numbers that big before.

Monday Mar 17, 2008 #

Running 57:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

Decent paced road run up to Crookes, along to Lodge Moor, down Lodge Lane and back up the A57 to Crosspool.

Orienteering (BUSA Relay Pre-run) 45:58 [4]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Enjoyed my little cruise round once I'd managed to open my map up. A couple of small errors but cruising round and in control. Didn't go as fast as the dirty shtowdents though.

Running 40:00 [2]
shoes: adidas swoops

Afternoon jog round Eccy woods while Gracie did her sesh. Dog-walker tastic.

Orienteering race (BUSA Individual (N/C)) 1:01:40 [4] 8.9 km (6:56 / km)
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Tough little beastie on Stanton Moor. Oli had made another cracking map (although I haven't had time to study it and find mistakes yet), and it was a good little course. A few little errors crept in, especially in and around the butterfly loops, and the running felt a bit more laboured today. Raced the last 2 or 3km with Baker which was fun - he was fairly shifting. Got in front just before the end but missed the last control much to his delight. On the day, I was happy to be within 2 mins of Neil, Scott and Oli.

Running 49:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Ran from Attercliffe along the Don to Meadowhall pretty much and back into Sheffield alongside the canal. Not a very nice part of the world.

Running 20:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

Little jog out to Attercliffe.

Orienteering 40:00 [4]
shoes: adidas swoops

4x little sprint courses planned by OJ (cheers!) and ran in the company of Gracie, Jen, OJ, Baker and Sprotty. The sun just about won making the last loop a bit of a teaser. Felt alright, nav alright, although I'm getting to know this place quite well.

Running 1:36:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Ran out to Beeley with Rob, Mike and Andy P. Then they ran "an orienteering course that Neil had planned" while I carried on, round a bit of Wharncliffe and back along a very windy edge into Hillsborough. At that point I decided to go exploring round the industrial bits along the railway line under Parkwood Springs. Don't think I'll go there again. Got internet at home now :o)

Running intervals 30:00 [5]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

5x1200m at the track with the Hallamshire posse. Yucky yucky yucky. Wind, rain, general ming, run through Attercliffe to get there. Happy days. Started the sesh not knowing what I was gonna do and not having my watch on it. Thought I might do 4x1500m, but Rob stopped just in front of me after 1200m on the first rep and I thought that that seemed like a good idea. So 5x1200m it turned out to be. Going from the guy shouting, all my reps were between 3.40 and 3.45, which I was happy with. Hip felt fine.

Running warm up/down 35:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

Jog out to track with Gracie. The spider bridge was shut and that threw me a bit, but found our way there in the end. Jog 3 laps down with Rach.

Running 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Malin Bridge, Loxley Valley, Stanno, Rivelin, Bole Hill. A bit of a mudfest out there, and legs (calfs especially) a bit stiff after yesterdays exertions.

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

Took Gracie on a scenic tour of Hillsborough and over the top of Parkwood Springs. Cruising along nicely at a fair lick.

Orienteering race (Burbage District Event) 49:45 [5] 9.0 km (5:32 / km)
shoes: adidas swoops

As Oli says, not much chance of either of us making any mistakes on here. I ran hard, felt really good and didn't miss at all, and so did Oli. 4 seconds seperated us and the furthest we were apart during the race was 19 seconds. Splits all pretty much the same, and 4-5 was the only leg that one of us didn't win (credit Mr Pinker). Good hard run, with a tiny bit of technique practice. Exchanged pleasantries with Marcus at the top of the climb from 17. Then went to the Sportsman and had a meat and potato pie and a pint of Landlord. That has to beat racing at 8am and having a cinamon toast and coffee after ;o) Guess the weather evens things out.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

15mins before and 15mins after.

Running long 2:00:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Longun from Grindleford caf, up onto Eyam, through Stoney Middleton and up to White Edge. A bit of a blowy day, and felt heavy for a lot of it. Freshened up though towards the end. On Froggatt Edge I joined in a fell race and started going through some back markers. Felt quite smug and superior for a bit, then asked someone what race it was, and he said it was the Grindleford Gallop and they were on mile 19 out of 21. Fair play, I hadn't run nearly that far.

Running intervals 40:00 [5]
shoes: adidas swoops

20x90secs (30 secs rec) Foxdal style. Just got going up Rivelin when a spritely runner crossed my path - hoped he/she wouldn't turn the direction I was running as I wasn't that keen on getting in a race. Then it transpired that it was Oli and he was gonna go the way I came, so I got the benefit of a nice chat in my recovery. Rest of the run went ok and I felt a bit better than yesterday. Last few reps downhill through Crookes weren't much good dodging traffic etc.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: adidas swoops

Out to Rivelin with Gracie, then the jog back down to the flat. Gracie was still hammering out hill reps when I got home, so I sat on a curb and watched.

Orienteering 39:00 [4] 6.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: adidas swoops

Did the Vasteras training course on Tankersley. First hit out on Neil's little baby - there was a gate missing which should've been mapped, but the rest was okay. Terrain probably a bit better than I expected (based on Hesley). Technique was pretty good - flow, hitting the controls (plastic bags) etc. Grace told me I was naughty for not having a compass all this time, but I'm not really missing it any more. Didn't feel like I was running very comfortably though.

Running 51:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Warm up, then collecting some of the bags in (i.e. re-ran most of the course). Tried a couple of slightly different routes - reckon out to the path, along, and in, is the best technique here (unfortunately). At home in the evening I spent some time trying to find drawing errors in the map but frustratingly didn't get anywhere.

Running intervals 40:00 [4]

10 x 3mins (1min off) on tracks in Wharncliffe. Wasn't really up for it and despite trying fairly hard, felt like I wasn't going anywhere quick. Got in a boo with my watch and took it off and threw it on the ground in frustration. It picked up a few scratches, but seemed to work better after.

Note

Went to see Kim about my hip. I'm going to live.

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2

In the rain/sleet/snow/wind/cold on roads in the dark with Gracie. Needless to say, we both got in a boo. Realised that my gloves made my hands colder than they would have been if I hadn't worn them, so threw them away when I got home. Neil gave us a telly tonight, so we lasted 2.5 days without one. Too long. Why anyone would be silly enough to consider needlessly lasting longer than that is beyond me. However, Neil's telly doesn't have a remote or aerial, and the manual controls are jammed. Therefore we can't watch it. Frustrating.

Orienteering race (Crich District Event) 49:11 [4]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Found my o-shoes in a bag that hadn't been opened since WOC. Some nice Ukrainian mold growing in there. Couldn't find my dibber though, and beginning to lose hope of ever finding my compass. Anyhoo, the race was pretty tough - terrainy and rocky - and I lost a minute early on (number 3). After that I ran pretty well but never felt like I really got going til the end when you could actually run a bit. Head a bit rough this morning. Andy Llewellyn was running well - I couldn't catch him for ages.

Running warm up/down 11:49 [2]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Warm up. Still haven't got a telly.

Moved into our lovely new flat :o) No telly yet.
