Running 1:35:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Had a couple of tapes to put out on Harter Fell so I went to the top of that. Actually sunny today and the whole of the Lake District clear so well worth the effort. Then I drove down a bit and went up White Pike where it was quite windy. Glad I didn't have to run as far today.

Running long 3:37:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Putting out tapes for some mountain marathon in the Lake District. A nice, clear day and since my route went near the top of Scafell Pike I thought it'd be rude not to go up there. Then saw Ranulph Fiennes as I headed over to Scafell. Almost wussed out of going up there too, but glad I didn't cos I hadn't been up that one before. Awesome views. Pretty tired by the end. Good training for the WOC middle race? Meh. Anyway, back to Langdale for an evening in the pub.

Running intervals 30:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

45x15s (30 reps) round the trespass, then out and back along the conduit. Must've pushed quite hard cos I was screwed at the end.

Running 23:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Before and after intervals. Conduit out and top of Rivelin back. Some guy had 6 dogs and I stood on one and it yelped.

Running 1:09:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Got caught in a big downpour. Not sure how I'd feel after being so tired on Tuesday and resting yesterday so took it steady, but felt pretty good. Found some more paths on t'other side of Rivelin that I hadn't been on before. The bridge at the bottom of Rivelin near the waterworks has been ripped apart and flung into the bank by the floods - must've been awesome to see it. Did mean I had to do some wading though.

Running race (Robin Hood Fell Race) 34:49 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Oh my God, I got so angry last night! I must have been hanging around with Neil too much. But he was right. That Stuart Bond fella is a complete prick. He was well behind me last I looked, then he cut a big corner off through some bracken and stuff, and pops out well in front of me. I catch him up, tell him he came off the route, and he denied it! I'm like, "how did you get in front of me then?" He goes, "there weren't any tapes". But I followed tapes the whole way. So I called him a cheat. Then I overtook him and he pushed me off the path. Anyway, all going well til the end and then in the last 50m he sprints past me and takes "2nd". Needless to say, I didn't shake his hand.

Nice evening anyway, but I felt really tired and was well behind Phil. Definitely need a rest day today.

Running 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Wore a long-sleeve top to cover the remains of my planetfear tattoos and so I got quite hot. Felt really tired for the first 30/40mins but seemed a little better by the finish. Them lapwings were at it again. Also I scared a sheep and it tried to jump over a trough full of water but landed right in it! Brilliant stuff. Made my day. Found a couple more paths on the far side of Rivelin that I've never been on. Wyming Brook, Headstone, Rod Moor (hehe), trig, Rivelin Dams.

Running 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Andy got back from France and was so keen to go running that I got dragged along too. My bum had become quite acquainted with the sofa so it was hard getting up. But after that it was ok. Trespass, headstone, Rivelin.

Running race (City Chase London) 1:30:00 [4]
shoes: asics roady things

We won and we'll be representing the UK in Rome in September!

Neil did loads of prep and thinking about this in advance which defo helped, especially as we were pretty much the only people running that weren't from London. Surprised by the lack of competition as it was a really good fun race with an awesome prize. Here's what we did:
- popped some balloons to find the name of a country (Saudi Arabia), name the capital (Riyadh) and count some guitars (29) to get the clue sheet
- spent 20mins on the phone to Marky Mark drawing circles on our street map
- run/tube to Docklands
- Neil does bungee trampolining (2x backwards roll, 2x forwards roll, 1x double backwards roll - impressive)
- we both do an easy 5min canoeing course
- DLR back to central London (Bank)
- Neil balances on a bike for 40secs
- we get parts of our legs waxed
- tip a tyre along a 20m track
- mystery game (find code to a lock, roll dice, open that box, eat what's inside - we were lucky cos it was sweets!)
- indoor golf (had to drive a ball over 150yds - I did it first go despite slicing it wildly)
- add up the cost of a shopping list in Snow and Rock
- tube down to Lambeth North
- paint lines on a school playground
- turbotrainer to blend a smoothie of garlic, vinegar, chillis... (I forget the rest, but it minged)
- run/tube to the finish
- run to sandbank on the Thames outside the Globe Theatre and dig around in the sand trying to find the Union Jack
- run back to the finish
Total time of about 3:25 I think and we ran for probably about 90mins (running pretty hard). Won by about 30mins. We had some luck though that the checkpoints we chose didn't take very long, and we could easily have failed the trampolining or the golf. Spent 10mins waiting for one tube though and another was stationary for a bit cos of flooding. Neil ran into a sign early on and got a lot of blood on his nice white t-shirt - good job he didn't have to talk to too many members of the public cos they probably wouldn't have been very keen on helping a bloody, sweaty, monkey-resembling guy.

Anyway, after all that we did a few TV interviews although I expect (hope) that no-one will ever see them. And we sat in a pub by the Thames getting drunk with everyone else that ran and all the organisers - nice touch that. It was so much fun that we stayed too long and ended up missing our train home so got another that terminated at Derby and got a taxi back to Sheffield. D'oh!

Running 1:11:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Ewwww, minging out there today. Combination of heavy rain, wind and mist. Can't believe it's the end of July and I'm losing feeling in my hands through coldness out on the moors. Home, Trespass, Pole, High Neb, Conduit, Wyming Brook, Home. Legs felt quite fresh which was a pleasant surprise.

Running race (Sheldon Fell Race) 24:56 [5] 4.0 mi (6:14 / mi) +200m 5:24 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Jeez some good people turning out to these races. Lloyd and Andy Thake there tonight, so knew 3rd was the best I could do. And that's where I came. With them (sort of) til the uphill then well and truly dropped. Looking like it was gonna be a nice evening til just about warm-up o-clock then it chucked it down. Stopped raining for the race, but very very muddy. Weird route this one. Big descent to start, then flat, then uphill to finish. Could feel yesterdays race in my legs, but ran alright. 1min behind Lloyd, about 30secs behind Andy, well ahead of whoever was 4th. Some big cows with big horns out there and a few scare stories kicking about of them charging people in the last couple of years. So I wore a red running vest... Nothing happened.

Running race (Bamford Carnival FellRace) 29:13 [5] 4.5 mi (6:30 / mi) +330m 5:17 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Basically straight up Win Hill and straight back. Plenty of the gang there tonight. Little Rob and Phil set the early pace and I tried to hang on. Us 3 broke away from the rest but they broke me a bit. Then Phil hurt his toe so I passed him and ended up 2nd - 22secs behind Little Rob. Pretty pleased with that. Especially as he only won the same as me - £20 of Outside vouchers. My time was slightly slower than 2005, but we'd taken a bit of a short cut that year. Nice, fairly sunny, fairly warm evening out in the Peaks.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

With Phil, Mike and OJ. They went topless but I wasn't feeling quite as gay.

Running 33:00 [2]
shoes: asics roady things

Morning jog, mainly on roads this time. Included a rather large hill. Felt alright.

Running intervals 24:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

2min hard, 1min recovery, 8reps. Pushed it hard and died off a bit. Legs felt heavy. Along the conduit and the road round the top Rivelin Dam so dead flat.

Running 35:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Out via Wyming Brook and back via the trespass. Cruising along nicely.

Monday Jul 16, 2007 #

Running 35:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Usual jog out round Redmires Dams. Nice to see a brief break in the rain.

Running 57:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Steady run taking in Rivelin, Stanno, Rivelin Dam and Wyming Brook. Seems like the bracken grew a good foot during the rain yesterday. Nice evening today but. Still felt a bit crap.

Running race (Great Hucklow Fell Race) 47:05 [4] 6.0 mi (7:51 / mi) +350m 6:39 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

I dunno, I just wasn't with it today. Legs didn't feel too bad or owt, but just didn't have any zip. Horrible grey and drizzly day. Came a dismal 7th, well behind Lloyd, Rob and Phil who all ran pretty well. Defo had the wrong shoe choice for the slippery mud, but it prob didn't make any difference. Still, it was a good way to make me do a hard(ish) run, and I had my fair share of the free flapjacks at the finish.

Orienteering race (Planetfear Ultrasprint) 20:00 [3]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

4 courses of about 500m each with shit loads of controls. Only made one mistake in the 4 races but that was enough to cost me a place in the final. Would prob be better just having 2 people at a time, or 4 wings of each butterfly as there was always someone doing your loop at the same time. Also would be amazing if you couldn't see through the barriers. How how how did Neil blag his way out of punching the wrong control? At first he admitted his mistake. Then he "remembered" going to the right control, but it didn't register. Yeah right. All good fun. Crappest beer festival I've ever been to after.

Note
(rest day)

Well I was gonna do intervals but unfortunately the rain was beyond the 45degree threshold so I couldn't. And besides, I need to rest up so that I'm fresh enough to win 150 smackerooneys tomorrow.

Running long 1:35:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Not a great day. L. hamstring very tight. Not feeling tired though. Went out to Headstone, then across Rod Moor (hehe), round to Dungworth (which aptly still smells of shit), down Loxley Valley then up Spout Lane (ouch) and Lodge Lane (ouch ouch). Hardcore. Saw a fair bit of wildlife and decided that animals are stupid. Got mobbed by some lapwings and a curlew, then a hare ran away from me over the moor, hit a rock or something which catapulted it up into the air and it did a double somersault before landing.

Running 35:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Another morning jog round Redmires Dams. Feeling quite stiff but loosened off a bit. Found some paths I'd never been on before.

Orienteering 12:34 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Tapton School. Head-to-head with Neil. We both got given the same maps so he didn't have to do much navigating. It was reasonably interesting. My legs were stiff but I ran ok.

Running 51:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Along the top of Rivelin and back to Tapton School. Nice evening.

Tuesday Jul 10, 2007 #

Running 41:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Can't be many people out there with a nicer morning run from their doorstep. Conduit to Redmires Dams, other conduit, down to Wyming Brook, top of Rivelin back. Sunny :o)

Running 1:03:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Down to Endcliffe Parks, over to Limb Valley, up to Lady Cannings, Oxstones trig and back across the mines. Felt alright, legs a bit heavy perhaps. Back just in time for Le Tour highlights. Good job TV doesn't rule my life or anything.

Monday Jul 9, 2007 #

Running 39:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Gentle jaunt from home along the canal to Milford, then Brocton and back over Jacob's ladder. It was nice and sunny and there was lots of birds and bees about.
(NB, from home in Stafford rather than Sheffield that is else it would've been a somewhat longer run)

Running race (Hathersage Gala Fell Race) 30:03 [5] 4.5 mi (6:41 / mi) +330m 5:26 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Nice evening for it. Hoping my old record would stay in tact but saw John Heneghen while I was warming up so knew there was no chance of that. Ran pretty well though, kept in touch with him all the way up the hill, but he nailed it down and beat me back by 25secs. I was only 11secs off my time last year, but it was slightly longer this time and wetter underfoot. Pleased with that cos I was going well last year and I haven't done as much hilly stuff recently. Neil (4th) got in a boo after with Bond (3rd) which was funny.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

With Nails. I was stroking some horses (while he had an eye-of-the-needle poo) then one of them bit my toe so I ran away.

Sunday Jul 8, 2007 #

Running 1:27:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Rivelin, out t'other side, Moscar, High Neb, Pole... Set off too soon after brekkie so had to have a 5min stop to avoid chucking. Then spent the rest of the run trying to remember the name `Moscar' - it was pissing me off. Knew it began m,o... Got very wet in the last 20mins. Before that it was ok.

Saturday Jul 7, 2007 #

Running 1:43:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

1 x cumberland sausage + gravy at LJ's. Feeling quite tired after so had a kip in front of Le Tour.

Before all that I went on Kinder with Neil and although the weather was clement, the peat hags were rather damp.

Friday Jul 6, 2007 #

Running intervals 40:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

90x30s (20 reps). Moving along alright but not killing myself. Quite a nice evening (only in comparison to the shit weather we've been served up recently). Spent a lot of the run running in water - probably good strength training. Tresspass, Stanage Pole, Stanage trig, Burbage Bridge, Oxstones, Burbage Mines, roads back.

Running 23:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

The first and last bits of the run when I wasn't doing intervals. Then went to Neil's and watched Die Hard With a Vengeance in preparation for the new one tonight.

Thursday Jul 5, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Another day coaching at Denstone College. Feeling really tired by the time I got home, and the rain was at a 45% angle which meant I couldn't go running.

Wednesday Jul 4, 2007 #

Orienteering 16:40 [4]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Sprint Race planned by Sprotty from Ruskin Park. Head to head with Jimbo but didn't see much of him. Saw a fair bit of Oli though. Some 10 year old girl told me I was sexy. Saw lots of chavs too who thought it was funny to block an ally with wheelie bins. Very slippery.

Running 1:11:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Into Sheffield along the top of Rivelin and back home along the bottom. Pretty tired (and wet, and muddy) by the end.

Tuesday Jul 3, 2007 #

Running 53:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Nice run from Middle's joint where I now live, right on the edge of Sheffield. Didn't have to run on any roads :o) Out on conduit, round the tresspass, over to Headstone, down to Rivelin Dam then up through Rivelin. Felt pretty good but could tell I had some races in my legs.

Monday Jul 2, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Coaching posh school kids at Denstone College all day. Knackered.

Sunday Jul 1, 2007 #

Orienteering race (WOC middle trial) 37:22 [5]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Didn't feel much pressure cos thought there was no chance of getting in the team. Knew that the area should suit me better than the others though. Lost 45 secs on the 12th control but other than that didn't do too much wrong, felt really good, pushed hard, and enjoyed the course. Very relieved that I got the middle place at WOC. Feel real bad for Oli tho.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Did do a warm down this time. With Neil.
