3 PM

Running 58:00 [3] 12.0 km (4:50 / km)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

Another meeting in London today (had a big ploughmans lunch too), then headed out for a run around Richmond Park, which was really nice and big. Then got a shower at a leisure centre (apparently no-one had ever asked for just a shower before) before heading off to Heathrow to catch my flight home.

Running 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

Had a meeting in London in the morning, but got out for a run round Bushy Park, Hampton Court and alongside the Thames in the arvo. Felt a bit rough though so didn't push - stopped a few times to take a few photos in fact - probably due to the full english brekkie (with beans) and pasty for lunch. Nice pub dinner (liver) followed by the cheese board.

Note
(rest day)

Had a big brunch (albeit without beans) before heading down to Birmingham with Pete, Hannah, Neil and Zanthe to watch the UK Olympic Trials. Got really into it and enjoyed it. Then drove to London listening to the footy and checked in to my hotel just in time to watch extra time and penalties...

Orienteering race 33:40 [3] 7.0 km (4:49 / km)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

SYO bbq race from Tim Tett's and winding round Walkley. Lots of nostalgia. Legs felt awful though so couldn't get any kind of pace going. Fortunately did just enough to beat Sprotty by 6secs. Neil was 2mins ahead though, unsurprisingly. Anyway, then ate some sausages and burgers, before playing some snooker at the Hallamshire, then went to the Blake and ate some pizzas at Alex's house.

Running 1:15:00 [3] 13.0 km (5:46 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

From Strines, up to Cakes of Bread, down and up to Pike Low, then Lost Lad, Back Tor and back. Complete and utter ming! Although I did really enjoy it in that strange way that you can't really explain because there wasn't much to actually enjoy. Maybe it was just the thought of the giant yorkshire pudding with sausages and a couple of pints in the pub after. The run killed me though - felt pretty bad after the race yesterday, and really not at all used to lifting my legs through all the heather. Pete, Neil, Sprotty and Little Rob had to wait for me quite a few times! I've changed. Anyway, then went to the Common Room for some dazzling pool skills, then had a cuzza with loads of Sheffield people and then went to the Red Deer. Great stuff.

Running race (Blackamoor Fell Race) 41:46 [5] 6.0 mi (6:58 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Spent the day meandering from Stafford to Totley for the fell race, with stops off at Cheadle, Froggall for a nice rainy walk, and Bakewell for chips and a late lunchtime pint.

I took the first bit of the race pretty steady, my legs not really up for going hard from the off. But stayed in contention and found myself at the front just as we hit the top of the hill. Me and Tom Wilde pulled away on the roughish descent, then I got a small gap on the final uphill. The run to the finish was painful, with Tom almost catching me a number of times, but I just did enough to hold on for the win - won a hamper of fruit! Class. Although a bit healthy for my liking. Anyway, pleased with how I ran, and great to be back racing on't moors (it was proper Blacka weather as well - bleak and dizzly). Although on inspection I ran 1.30 quicker in 2006, which I think is an indication of how fit I was back then even if I did less roadrunning in those days.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Just a short warm-up really. Waited around for the prize-giving, then went to the Closed Shop and caught up with several people, just like the old days.

Day 2 of exam - also long and exhausting, and probably not very successful either. Then drove to Stafford where Dad made me a homecooked burger and gave me some homebrew. Cheered me up no end!

Running race (Oldbury-on-Severn Fun Run) 21:07 [5] 4.0 mi (5:17 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

Chris Palmer mentioned this race to us on Friday night, and in the beer/cider haze, Heather and I agreed to it. Glad we did though, as it was an awesome race. Something like 700 people decending on a tiny village, running round some quaint country roads for a bit, then all hitting the beer garden and soaking up a bit of sun, while a Midsomer Murders-esque village fete was going on. This is definitely the kind of thing that I do miss about England! My race wasn't great, probably because I haven't run much recently, but I did enough for 2nd, which meant I got to shake hands with the local celebrity - someone who used to be in Casualty. Great to see Heather running well - it must be in the genes!

Saturday Jun 16, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Spent the day in Cheltenham having a great celebration with Mum and Morgan :o)

Friday Jun 15, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Did a bit of shopping in Bristol with Heather in the morning, then we went out to Clevedon for an afternoon at the 'seaside'. It was surprisingly quite nice! Then winged our way up to Matt Palmer's to watch England destroy the Swedes.

Thursday Jun 14, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Had a walk in the Mendips with Mum and Heather, including a stilton ploughmans lunch - I'm progressing nicely through my list of English things to do. Caught up with some of the BOK crew in the evening at Tim & Laura's.

Wednesday Jun 13, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Day out in the Cotswolds with Mum - walked from Broadway up to Broadway Tower and got some lovely views.

Running 37:00 [3] 8.0 km (4:38 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Running 1:11:00 [3] 14.0 km (5:04 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Did a proper English countryside public footpathy run up Bredon Hill (Worcestershire) in the rain/drizzle. Then headed down to Cheltenham to stay with Mum for a few days.

Sunday Jun 10, 2012 #

Pub lunch then a bit of a stroll on the Chase with Dad.

12 PM

Running 1:09:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:56 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Lovely run on Cannock Chase following my nose around some of my favourite bits - it's a great place, I really enjoyed it, only saw 1 deer but. Felt a bit weary after the journey but good to stretch the legs. Not quite the scorching English early summer I was hoping it would be though.

Friday Jun 8, 2012 #

Note

Bus from Canberra to Sydney, then flying from Sydney to Kuala Lumpa - my first Starbucks in ages, I haven't missed much but it was nice to ask for an Americano.

Running 40:00 [3] 9.0 km (4:27 / km)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

Bright and early run to the Gabba, since it was the only thing in Brisbane that I'd heard of before coming here and I missed it in yesterday's run. Nice and sunny, again. Back to Canberra again tonight for a chilly couple of days before I get to experience a BBQ summer in the UK for a couple of weeks...

Monday Jun 4, 2012 #

4 PM

Running 49:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:54 / km)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

Up in Brisbane for a couple of days on a course - fortunately they let us out early, so I was able to squeeze in my run before it got dark. Did a typical explore-y type run involving CBD, Botanic Garden, Riverside, other random park and back - basically exactly the same description as recent runs in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne! Yep, Brisbane seems pretty nice - all very prestine and clean. And warm too, considering it's winter.

Orienteering race 25:33 [5] 5.0 km (5:07 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Majura Pines - ACT state league race. Nice open pine forest and Jase had planned the ideal course for the area - control picking keeping you mainly off the paths (of which there were a lot of fiddly, wiggly ones). All about direction and distance today. I got it pretty much spot on and dug in, and ended up having a near perfect run - definitely one of my best runs for a while.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Saturday Jun 2, 2012 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 29:00 [4] 5.0 km (5:48 / km)

Saturday event on Red Hill - proper Sheffield weather today. Not a difficult area, but quite enjoyed the course - kept me off paths quite a lot and a few route choices. Felt pretty good, but definitely aware that my current 'feeling good' speed is slower than it has been recently.

Running 47:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:42 / km)

Ran to the event from home and back again afterwards.
