Note
(rest day)

Was going to go to Black Mountain for the orienteering, so got up to leave at 5.20pm, asked the boss if there was much else I could help out with, and ended up staying at work til 9.45pm.

Running 1:29:00 [3] 16.0 km (5:34 / km)

My Sunday morning Cockies long run initiation with a good sized (numbers, not body mass) group on Majura and Ainslie. Almost didn't go after a bad night's sleep, but glad I did, especially for the Tour-de-France style fun and games at the front on the climbs. The big hills felt like hard work, mainly because I was working hard. Really good to be running in a group again, and very much enjoyed the coffee at Sfoglias after. Getting your long run out of the way early means that you still have the whole day to go shopping.

Running 2:15:00 [1] 11.0 km (12:16 / km)

Hard to know what to log this as really - drove out to Namadgi and ran up a lovely trail to Square Rock, which was both of those things. It also afforded me some good views. Enjoyed this section. Then thought I'd go 'off road' and try and bag McKeanhie Trig. Man it was rough! Head high scrub the whole way so impossible to see where I was going. Also was attempting to follow a very vague spur. Tried to run where possible, but I was down to like 20mpks at best. After 65mins and still well shy of the beginning of the climb I knew it was time to turn back. My map had disintegrated (no map bag) and I didn't have a compass. 20minutes later and I was back in the same spot going toward the trig again. D'oh! Lucky that I got a view of it to be sure, and the sun popped out to confirm I was doing a 180. Anyway, eventually bashed my way back to the square rock trail. Can't say I enjoyed this very much - it was really rough going and impossible to see anything. My plans for exploring the whole of Namadgi have taken a set back. I hope some of the other remote peaks and trigs are in slightly nice bush. Upon googling it seems McKeanhie trig is an impressive pile of stones on a big boulder, so I will have to come back to conquer it another time.

Running 39:00 [3] 8.0 km (4:53 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

Explored a bit of Griffith, Narrabundah and Forrest. Drizzly, rainy and a bit cold - reminded me of the good times in Sheffield.

Running 42:00 [3] 9.0 km (4:40 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

Never thought I'd get this familiar with 6.50am. Still was nice and I felt really rather good once I'd got going. Same run as yesterday but in reverse. Lots more roos.

Running 46:00 [3] 9.0 km (5:07 / km)

Red Hill loop bright and early again. A bit stiff after the street-o last night.

Orienteering (Forrest - Street-O) 27:30 [5] 7.5 km (3:40 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

Fun street-o event in Forrest. Score event where you had to get 18 out of 20 controls, so lots to think about! Nice place for it - quiet suburban roads. Fairly happy with my route, although I think Geoff and Grace's was slightly shorter? Felt good running. Enjoyable.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

Ran there and back from home with Gracie.

Running 1:36:00 [3] 17.0 km (5:39 / km)

Mt Coree. It was cold and wet and grey today but stuck to my plan and did it anyway. Had to start fairly early as had to go to work again this afternoon (how rude!). Good run with a chunky climb. It was all on big fire trails, but it they did take me through some remote native Australian bush, which was very pretty.

11 AM

Running 1:11:00 [3] 15.0 km (4:44 / km)

Scorcher! 32degs. Had a bit of a headache from wine last night and a lack of water this morning. All those things combined badly and I severly bonked after about 40mins. Feeling good otherwise though. Lovely run up on Isaacs Ridge, Wanniassa and Farrer Ridge. I've seen more roos than you can shake a stick at so far, but nothing more exciting than that (i.e. snakes, echidnas or wombats). Can't be long surely...

Running 36:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:09 / km)

Woohoo managed 4 early runs in a week! Did Davidson trig again this morning but the other way round and a bit shorter than last time.

Running 41:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:06 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

Bright and early round Jerrabomberra wetlands. Not overly enjoyable due to unspecial weather, very flat, tarmac, very early. Still, got training out of the way and enjoyed my coffee on the balcony after :o)

Running 48:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:48 / km)

Another early morning one - not as warm as yesterday, but still nice. This time went round some singletracks on the north bit of Red Hill.

Running 45:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

Work is super busy now for 4 weeks so the best bet for me running is to do it first thing. Nice run from the new flat, up to Davidson Trig and round some single tracks on the south bit of Red Hill. Awesome morning - nice and warm, and great views. Then at work til 8.30pm again.

Monday Nov 14, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

No time for a run - at work 8.30am til 8.30pm.

Sunday Nov 13, 2011 #

Note

More shopping for the flat - bed frame, drawers and ordering the internet the main things.

Saturday Nov 12, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

Moved into a new flat! It's nice. Spent the day buying a mattress, fridge and washing machine, then out for dinner with Jasmine & Craig.

Running 1:27:00 [3] 18.0 km (4:50 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

Good run from Barton - out through Jerrabomberra wetlands round the end of Lake BG, then up Mount Pleasant, Campbell Park, Mount Ainslie (nice view), Kings Bridge and back. Nice evening, felt a bit tired but was just cruising. Should get better at hills at this rate.

Orienteering race (Stromlo (Twilight #3)) 30:20 [4] 6.0 km (5:03 / km)

Fun course out in the semi-open at Stromlo. Some quite tricky bits with rocks in amongst low-vis bushes, which I enjoyed. Quite ankly twisty terrain so took it quite careful (plus I felt a bit crap). Good area - would've been cool back in the day before the pine forest burned down. Felt sure I would see a snake out there as it was hot, stony and open, but I didn't.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)

Tuesday Nov 8, 2011 #

Note

Was going to do the Weston Park 5km tonight but, as it was raining really heavily and I'd already trained this morning, I didn't.
7 AM

Running 30:00 [4] 7.0 km (4:17 / km)

6x o-sprintervals on University of Canberra and Radford College with Olle (who planned it), Jase and Jim the Norwegian. It was pretty early in the morning but I didn't feel too bad. Brought back memories of mapping UC about 4yrs ago, which also helped a bit on a couple of the loops. Head-to-head chasingy type format made it fun.

12 PM

Running 1:34:00 [3] 16.0 km (5:53 / km)

Long run on Rob Roy. Started at 12pm when it was 30degrees :o) and I have now picked up a good tan/burn on my shoulders. Ran from Banks up to a trig on Big Monks, then through some nice open pastures, and up to another trig on Rose. Nice bushland round here, and great views across Canberra, the mountains to the west, and back to the Tinderries (which we climbed yesterday). Then climbed Mount Rob Roy and found the trig (off the track) before heading back down to the car. A good run - lovely bushland and views, didn't see a single other person, and plenty of tracks to run on. Good hill climbs too. Felt pretty strong and didn't mind the heat too much (31.5degs according to the car when I finished). Saw a blue-tongued lizard and some wallabies, disappointingly haven't seen a snake yet...

Note
(rest day)

Not really a rest day - did an 8hr bushwalk with Grace, Jasmine and Craig up Tinderry Peak and Tinderry Twin Peak. The use of two cars meant we could do an end-to-end walk. Half of the walk was off-paths, but fortunately the bush wasn't too thick. Hardly anyone goes off paths and up these peaks - we were only the 4th group in the log-book on the summit this year! The views from the top were stunning - could see distant Canberra, as well as snow-topped mountains in the Snowys the other way. It was a beautiful hot sunny day (high 20s) and we had lunch on the top while 2 wedge-tailed eagles circled around us. Really good fun and felt like a proper explorer.

A tyre burst on us on the way home, so had to stop and change it. Now need to work out how to get the alloys onto the spare.

Running 1:15:00 [3] 16.0 km (4:41 / km)

Nice run from Campbell Park, along the fence to Hacket Hill, wiggled through Majura pines for a bit, round and up to top of Ainslie and back. Felt a bit achey and slow.

Orienteering race (Campbell Park) 30:47 [5] 7.0 km (4:24 / km)

Nice & fast bit of open woodland but quite tricky due to the vagueness - very enjoyable. Felt good running, lost ~1min on #11 due to finding some unmapped rock patches, also struggled with direction a bit - haven't got the hang of using my baseplate and holding a control card. Need a map bag for next week to stop my map disintegrating and to put the control card in.

Running race (Boathouse 5km) 16:17 [5] 5.0 km (3:15 / km)
shoes: New Balance 769

First of the spring series of Tuesday evening 5kms - hopefully I'll get along to a few of these. Wasn't expecting much tonight: partly cos of a lack of proper training, but mainly because of a large work lunch and a couple of beers in the afternoon in aid of the Melbourne Cup. So the time wasn't really of a concern to me. Got in a good race with some dude called Nick though - nip tuck all the way. He made a move at 4km but I counterpunched and got enough of a gap to hold on. Felt pretty good for the whole thing which was pleasing. Good to see quite a few other orienteers there too.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Not much warm-up but warmed down with Grant, Josh and Lachlan for a bit, then jogged home with Gracie.
