Running intervals 20:00 [5] 5.8 km (3:27 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

4x5mins on roads pretty much round the AXA5 route near Hallen. Legs seized up on me and felt very heavy.

Running 26:00 [2] 5.4 km (4:49 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

Warm up & down and in between.

Running 51:00 [3] 13.0 km (3:55 / km)

Not so stunning - Dingle, Blaise and Kings Weston. Felt like I was running ok, but legs a bit heavy.

Running 1:05:00 [3] 11.0 km (5:55 / km)

Drove up from Aprica a bit and did a final hilly run up Monte Padrio (2153m) - didn't know I'd be climbing it at the start of the run, but ended up doing so. Grace found a much better route up than I did it turned out. Stunning views from the top.

Running 1:01:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:06 / km)

Drove to Aprica in the alps (in Lombardy) via a very high mountain pass. Went for an evening run up a ski slope. Then found a marked route from a mountain race, so thought I'd follow this for a bit - it was brilliant, contouring through a steep forest on a tiny path - a bit like having last start at the o-ringen or something. There's a big 'sky marathon' here next weekend - shame to have missed it, billboards advertising it all over the place.

Running 1:17:00 [3] 12.0 km (6:25 / km)

Up in the main bit of the dolomites now. Drove to the Passo di Falzarego and did a ~4hr walk to the top of a cable car via some spectacular scenery and some gnarly looking via ferrata. Then went for a run from lower down the valley near Cortina (~1400m) steeply uphill through some lovely alpine forest to a mountain hut and lake at ~2000m.

Saturday Jun 25, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

Not really a rest day - did a 5+hr walk with Gracie from the top of a cable car above Molveno (~1300m) to the summit of Cima Dei Lasteri (2459m). Great walk, nice and sunny, awesome views.

Running 52:00 [3] 9.0 km (5:47 / km)

Left Florence and drove all the way up to Molveno in the Brenta group of the Dolomites. Went for a run climbing around 600m on some mountain paths through some great forest. Popped out on some alpine meadows, which were nice. Incredibly steep, huge mountains looming above me.

Running 1:04:00 [3] 13.0 km (4:55 / km)

Got up fricken early to get a run in before a day of touristing in Florence. As we were east of the city centre, I thought I'd head east and see what happened. Quite quickly found myself out of the city and climbing gradually on a road through vinyards. Turns out I pretty much ran to Fiesole, but turned off onto some tracks leading me up Monte Ceceri. Got amazing views over the city in the early morning sunshine.

Wednesday Jun 22, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

This was a rest day - went to the beach and pool then drove to Florence and had a quick look round in the evening.

Tuesday Jun 21, 2011 #

5 PM

Running 1:04:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:34 / km)

Went to Lucca in Tuscany, which was like an Italian York. Then headed to the coast and camped at Torre del Lago Puccini. I then went for a run around a flat, bushy forest park on some nice but straight paths, onto the beach, through some open sanddunes and back through tacky tourist resorts. Decent tempo. Nice and hot :o)

Monday Jun 20, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

Not really a rest day. Went to the Cinque Terra on the Ligurian coast and walked (~4.5hrs) along the coastpath between the 5 towns. It was hot so we needed lots of ice cream (and coffee). Pretty spectacular coastline and villages - shame a lot of other people knew about it, although not many did the walks between.

Running 1:35:00 [2] 13.0 km (7:18 / km)

Gorgeous run with Gracie from near Bedonia (southern Emilia Romagna) up Monte Pelpi (1495m) and back. Nice track on the way up. Alpine meadows, horses, cows with bells and cracking views from the top. Couldn't find the path a bit on the way down, but well worth it.

Saturday Jun 18, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

Traveling out to Italy - flew Bristol to Bergamo, then drove down to Bedonia.

Friday Jun 17, 2011 #

Orienteering 1:15:00 [3] 12.0 km (6:15 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Clent Hills, near Kidderminster. Had to pop up to Birmingham in the morning so thought I'd take the opportunity to go somewhere different for a run. Fished out a map from a colour coded event I did there in 1998 and re-ran that. It's a great little area - a couple of quite high hills affording awesome views (if you look west towards Shropshire and Wales, and not east towards Birmingham). Also really handy for the M5. The bracken had grown up quite a bit in the open bits, but the white was mainly quite nice and the map didn't seem to have aged very much. Very hilly course so pretty tired at the end.

7 PM

Running 1:03:00 [3] 13.0 km (4:51 / km)

Team Monday with Matt, Keith, Tim and Duncan. Went to Leigh Woods where Tim took us up his gnarly arete. Then Keith dropped off as there was too much downhill. The pace became quite honest from then as we looped back via Abbots Pool and AC.

Running intervals 30:00 [5] 9.5 km (3:09 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Came very close to not being arsed for a 2nd day in succession, but eventually made it out the door. At that moment the rain seemed to ease a little and after a few hundred metres I decided I'd make the most of the run and do some intervals - 10x3mins. Ended up pushing really hard and got further round the loop than I normally do.

Running warm up/down 26:00 [2] 3.5 km (7:26 / km)

Couldn't be arsed, nothing more to it than that!

Note
(rest day)

Went to London for the day for a tutorial so not much time for running - seems to have helped keep the semi sore throat at bay. GG is to blame since Hector and Doug have had it (worse than me) too.

Tuesday Jun 7, 2011 #

10 AM

Running 32:00 [3] 7.0 km (4:34 / km)

Morning study day cruise in Blaise including a re-run of last night's route in 27mins.
5 PM

Running 1:00:00 [3] 13.0 km (4:37 / km)

Standard Blaise, nice evening. Hints of a sore throat but felt fine running - I doubt this run will affect whether it comes on or not.

7 PM

Running race (Blaise Blazer) 20:53 [5] 5.8 km (3:36 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

A short, sharp, lung-bursting race, with 3 quite steep hills. I ran well in this this (21.21) time last year so wasn't expecting much from myself this evening, but felt quite good as I set off. Tired by the end but pleased to look at my watch as I crossed the line and find I was nearly 30secs faster :o) The other BOK people all ran well - we nearly cleaned up the prize giving!

Running warm up/down 41:00 [2] 7.2 km (5:42 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Various jogging in Blaise with Gracie and the gang.

Orienteering race (BOK Champs) 39:00 [4] 6.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Bathampton Down - 1hr score event. Not particularly hard getting them all in the time period, or choosing a route round. But it was a fun area with some good detailed bits, so I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Made a couple of mistakes early on, but kept them under 10mins which was a relief.

Running warm up/down 11:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Saturday Jun 4, 2011 #

Note
(rest day)

Did a nice long walk in the Cotswolds with my family and some of their friends.

Friday Jun 3, 2011 #

9 AM

Running 46:00 [3] 8.0 km (5:45 / km)
shoes: Asics Nimbus

No time for orienteering this morning (no bad thing I reckon) so Doug, Hector and I did a morning jog in a forest near Aix Les Bains before heading to the airport.

It was certainly a useful training camp - I think the forests are terrible, but there is definitely an opportunity to do really well at this WOC. Hopefully the maps will be better for the competitions. Plenty to think about between now and then.

Orienteering 1:03:00 [3] 7.0 km (9:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Montagne de bange. Time to put a few demons to bed. Had a better run this time, no real mistakes in the first 30mins. Then got a bit complacent and lost 6mins on the next 2 controls. Fairly clean (but slow) after that. Better. Better terrain too, although probably not that relevant to WOC unfortunately.

Orienteering 45:00 [3] 5.0 km (9:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Le Revard. Not my favourite area this one, especially in the snow. Did a bit of control pick, with a couple of longer legs planned by Hector. I was pretty accurate, but slow, and the snow made it very hard to run at all. My orocs fell apart too.

Orienteering 50:00 [3] 1.5 km (33:20 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Le creux qui sonne. Mon dieu, tres amusement. It snowed heavily overnight and where we were lounging about in the sun 2 days ago, was now in a foot of snow. Unbelievable. So what was already probably the most difficult place I've ever orienteered was now a whole lot harder. I'd like to say I coped amicably, but actually I had the worst run ever in my life. The 6th control was 1.3km into the course, I looked at my watch and it said 49mins. At that rate, the 3.7km course was going to take a very long time, so I was forced to jack. Timed out! The 20min mistake at #2 didn't help, but it at least it overshadowed my 3-6mins mistakes on the other controls.
