6 PM

Running 1:05:00 [3] 15.0 km (4:20 / km)

Fairly long day at work after early start to get some study in. Ran HFW though via AC avec le sac pour la elite OMM. Zout alors.

Tuesday Sep 28, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 1:04:00 [3] 15.0 km (4:16 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Decent paced HFW with sack via railway path, Eastville Pk, Frome Valley, Purdown, Scummead and Badock Park. Felt alright.

Running 1:18:00 [2] 14.0 km (5:34 / km)

Team Monday sesh from Burrington Combe in the Mendips. A special outing as it'll probably be our last chance to run in the 'light' for a while (it wasn't very light). Nice route though - enjoyed v much. Good turn out tonight too and especially impressive commitment from Dr Brown who came all the way from Bath and didn't even do the run (I suspect the pub dinner was the real reason).

Sunday Sep 26, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 58:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:09 / km)

Studying all day but snuck out for a cheeky loop round Blaise later on. Felt pretty good.

Orienteering race (SW Champs) 49:00 [5] 10.0 km (4:54 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

WSX Regional Event at Wareham Forest near the South Coast. Courses were very short for some reason, but by the end I was quite glad of that - there were lots of heavily rutted, tussocky open areas which were really slow. I probably went a bit too straight in general and should've stuck to paths more. A few bits of iffy mapping cost me some time too. Course was well planned though and some of the white bits were very nice. My speed was pretty rubbish - maybe trying too hard and a bit tired from recent long runs.

Note
(rest day)

Played tennis against Gracie in the evening. Lost 6-0, 6-4. A dark dark day. No, it actually was dark, which was why I lost. It'll be nice to play her in the light sometime.

Running 1:59:00 [3] 26.0 km (4:35 / km)

Another long run HFW, this time venturing south towards Dundry. Tried to bag a trig on The Peart (ST559678) which was on my 2005 OS Landranger map. No luck finding it. Disappointedly carried on and bagged the Dundry trig (already bagged several months ago) as a consolation. Great views of Bristol. Then Long Ashton, Ashton Court, Bridge, Downs, home. Turned out the trig was removed in 1981. Gutted. Still, good to get out for another long run carrying my sack again. Just for the craic of course.

5 PM

Running 53:00 [3] 12.0 km (4:25 / km)

Contrived wiggle round BE - felt pretty good, got pretty bored.

Tuesday Sep 21, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 1:53:00 [3] 24.0 km (4:43 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Long HFW along the Bristol-Bath cyclepath, through Eastville Park, up the River Frome to M4, through Stoke Gifford to Patchway, Cribbs, Filton Airfield and home. Felt pretty good for most of it. Also carried my bag. No reason in particular.

Monday Sep 20, 2010 #

7 PM

Running 1:01:00 [3] 12.0 km (5:05 / km)

Team Monday - just me and Keithy this week. We ran from his house, through Leigh Woods, out to Abbot's Pool and back through AC. Got back just before it got dark. Could feel yesterday in my legs at first, but got better as it went on.

Orienteering race (BOK Long-O) 1:44:00 [4] 18.0 km (5:47 / km) +815m 4:43 / km
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Headless Hill and High Meadow in the Forest of Dean. Scene of the WOC selection race long last year where I bonked and dropped from the lead down to umpteenth cos of the massive hills. Chillaxed a bit more today - more of a long-o style course than normal orienteering (i.e. pretty piss easy) but that was fine by me. Felt pretty strong all the way round which was nice - probably paced myself a bit better than last week. Free cuppa at the finish hit the spot.

Saturday Sep 18, 2010 #

3 PM

Running intervals 40:00 [4] 10.0 km (4:00 / km)

3mins on (hardish), 1min off (slowish) to spice things up round most of the usual haunts. Felt pretty good all told.

Running 20:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:00 / km)

First 10mins and last 10mins of the same run.

Friday Sep 17, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Played tennis against Gracie again - I was terrible. Not good. Cheered up by chips after.

Thursday Sep 16, 2010 #

Running 58:00 [2] 11.0 km (5:16 / km)

A nice run in Blaise with my wife - we had a little look at Blaise Hamlet on the way which was lovely.

6 PM

Running 1:25:00 [3] 20.0 km (4:15 / km)

HFW via the towpath, Pill, Avonmouth Bridge, Shitehampton, KW hill. Not very much interesting to say about this run except there was an impressive weather front to look at.

Monday Sep 13, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 1:09:00 [2] 13.0 km (5:18 / km)

Team Monday run with Gracie, Tim, MarkS and Keith from the Britton's, out to the Downs, down to Sea Milfs, up through Shitehampton GC and back through Blaise. Fun times, got a bit dark towards the end. Feel more achey from the tennis on Saturday than the recent long runs.

12 PM

Orienteering race (Long Mynd Long-O) 1:47:00 [4] 18.0 km (5:57 / km) +860m 4:48 / km
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

A great long-o put on by Wreken Orienteers. I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of map and course quality and whether it would be worth the 2+ hr drive, but I thought at least the views and terrain would probably be quite nice. It was all top notch though - a really good proper orienteering map and some fiendish route choices. Took the straight options in general which meant some very steep climbs and decents but made me feel hard. Felt great for the first 80mins or so, but slowed quite a bit towards the end - maybe some food and drink would've been a good idea. A really nice day with plenty of good views. We also had a nice drive home, although we timed it a bit badly as a tractor show had just ended near Ludlow which meant a lot of tractors going home on single-carriage way roads.

Saturday Sep 11, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Although did play tennis for a couple of hours with Gracie. Won comfortably 6-4, 6-2, 4-6. I hit my first practice shot into a compost heap and retrieving the ball meant I was really smelly for the whole game.

Friday Sep 10, 2010 #

7 PM

Running 1:03:00 [3] 13.0 km (4:51 / km)

Badock Wood, Henleaze, Downs, Sneyd Pk, Dingle, home. Felt a bit achey at first (something to do with 19miles yesterday probably) but not too bad by the end.

Thursday Sep 9, 2010 #

6 PM

Running 2:14:00 [3] 31.0 km (4:19 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Today Tim and I ran to Bath. Wasn't sure how much of a good idea this would be, but I felt surprisingly ok afterwards. We went down into town then all the way along the old railway cycle path. Enjoyed the first 14miles or so and time flew by, but the last 5miles dragged a bit and I was getting pretty tired and sore by the end. A cheeky can of coke from a Chinese in Bath helped no end. Kept up a decent tempo the whole way. Laura then kindly gave us a lift home.

Wednesday Sep 8, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 1:01:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:21 / km)

Blaise, KW hill, Shitehampton GC, Sea Milfs, Canford Park. About as contrived as I'm prepared to go although nowhere near as good as some of the examples posted yesterday - I couldn't believe this run was only 61mins, it felt much longer. But I did go through some nice bits. Felt good runningwise though.

Tuesday Sep 7, 2010 #

6 PM

Running 1:09:00 [3] 16.0 km (4:19 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Fairly roady run along KW hill, Shitehampton, Avonmouth (village), A4, Cabot Park, Hallen, home. Legs a bit achey but not too sore and I felt fairly good in the main. Smelly and industrial run, fairly boring but I find big loops mentally easier than contrived wiggles.

Monday Sep 6, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Drinks after work, plus it was raining, plus I did a half marathon yesterday.

Sunday Sep 5, 2010 #

9 AM

Running race (Bristol Half Marathon) 1:12:05 [5] 13.1 mi (5:30 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 769

Happy with that - knocked a minute off my time from 2yrs ago in the Sheffield Half. Felt like I ran pretty well - faded a bit at the end so maybe could've paced it a bit better, but I don't think that would have made all that much difference (maybe would've got me under 72 though and not beaten by any women).

It was quite a damp, grey day - probably good conditions. Felt great over the first few miles (5.15 for mile 1) and ran alongside Liz Yelling til about 4miles. She dropped off though and I went through halfway in 34.55ish. That rung a few alarmbells though as I knew I wasn't (close to being) in sub-70 shape. Hung on through to 10miles in 54.30 and became aware of mutterings in the crowd of "ooh here comes the first woman". Claire Hallisey gradually reeled me in and we ran together for miles 11-12.5 which was quite cool as the crowd were going mental for her being from Bristol. Thought it would be rude not to let her outsprint me.

Will have to do another of these - maybe the Bath Half in March? We'll see - not sure I'll ever get sub-70, but can defo get a fair bit closer yet. That Matt Ellis that beat me on Tuesday ran 70.40 so I'm happier about that race now too.

Gracie ran really well to shave some seconds off her pb and my sis comfortably got round her first running race. Good crowds out today and 11000 runners so it was pretty cool.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: New Balance 769

5 PM

Running 38:00 [3] 8.0 km (4:45 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Gracie and I showed Mikey the sights of Blaise, Stoke the Bishop, the downs and W-o-T. Felt fine.

Friday Sep 3, 2010 #

6 PM

Running 45:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Not very exciting run out to Spaniorium Hill and back through Hallen. Felt pretty poo.

Thursday Sep 2, 2010 #

6 PM

Running 33:00 [2] 7.0 km (4:43 / km)

Cracking run with Timmy out around Leigh Woods and Ashton Court - really appreciated having the company. I wasn't up for the full 25km so cut off after a short while, but we'd already had a good natter by then. Good times, good company.

Ok, it wasn't really with Timmy - I actually went exploring some ginnels in Westbury-on-Quim

Running 45:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:30 / km)

Lovely evening - headed out round Blaise for a nice cruise - felt pretty good so went faster than a recovery run but not fast enough to be tempo.
