Running 28:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Ran up through Cotham and Redland out to the Britton/Pearson mansion.

Running 1:24:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Team Monday run with pretty much a full house (super-sub Stu came in for Marky Mark). Ran from Charles' house near Purdown and did lots of loops and gratuitous hills through lots of mud before crossing into the Frome Valley (which seemed nice) where we did more of the same, before coming back to Purdown and doing a bit more of the same. Felt ok, a bit heavy when it was hilly/muddy but fine when it was flat/dry (not often).

Orienteering race (Harlow Hill DistrictEvent) 45:00 [4]
shoes: adidas swoops

Wet and muddy and a much smaller area than I'd guessed from the OS map. Some nice bits of wood, some not so, hard to run hard due to slipperyness, but also because I was very tired and slow. Made some mistakes but kept on trucking. Hadn't realised Nixy would show up - good job for me that he made a few booboos.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: adidas swoops

10up with Gracie, and 10down jogging round the last bit of the course. I got really cold on the warm down - I'd have been better off not doing it.

warmup

Orienteering (AIRE series) 24:00 [4]
shoes: adidas swoops

Mini AIRE event on Danefield. Nice afternoon in the end, and a good course keeping us off paths but in runnable bits of forest and with plenty of climb. Back to basics with pin punching and, get this, normal paper maps and a map bag. Confirmed my belief about how crap and pointless waterproof maps are - this was really good quality printing. Nice.

Running 1:11:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Ran back home from Danefield on the Ebor way through Bramhope, over Bowshaws trig, round Eccup reservoir and back through Alwoodley. Felt fine.

Running 36:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

By contrast to yesterday, this was a filthy, horrible, cold, wet, dark, early morning, horrible run that I'd rather forget about.

Running 1:18:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Night run on country roads out to Long Ashton then up a big hill to Dundry. Cracking views over the twinkling lights of Bristol - stopped for a while to admire. Made the run back through the badlands of South Bristol worthwhile. Felt quite good on the run, and then ate a big pie in Bedminster with my sis.

Running 1:20:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Petzl run up through Ashton Court, down past Abbots Pond, wiggled through Leigh Woods, across the suspension bridge and back. Felt quite good but suffering a bit with motivation to run fast or for very long.

Running 1:28:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Ran to Perce's in Shirehampton via Ashton Court, Leigh Woods, Pill and the big windy motorway bridge. Got a bit lost at the end so gave him a buzz to find out where I needed to go - good job I had a mobile phone. Legs felt very heavy but carrying my bag probably didn't help.

Running 1:04:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

From Mark and Alice's house in Risca, South Wales, running with Mark, Mark and Keith. Along the Craig y Wenallt bridlepath, along a little path popping out at the road above Pantyreos, then up the road to Cwrt Henllys and straight on up to the Mynydd Henllys ridge, down the other side a bit and along the single-track in the trees to Pegwn-y-bwlch (that bit was fun). Then steeply up to the trig on Twmbarlwm before dropping onto Mountain Road and running back along that to Mark and Alice's. I wouldn't say I exactly knew all of that detail while we were running. Was quite windy and cold but good fun getting out on the fells and put some effort in at times. Nice dinner afterwards too :o)

Running 1:20:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

With Gracie round Lindley Moor and over to Beaver Dyke (hehe) reservoir, then along some path westwards to another reservoir and back up the hill. A really nice route that would be lovely in the dry on a sunny day, unfortunately it was filthy wet, really windy and it got dark much sooner than I anticipated. Oh well, nice to get out and explore a bit and to have some company :o)

Orienteering race (Sheffield Chase Prologue) 17:52 [5]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Not a great ending to my brief SYO career. It all went wrong from #1 in the prologue. Tried to do the right thing and check my descriptions to see which side of the fence it was on, but I looked at the start description and not number 1, and consequently ended up on the wrong side. I'd have been better off not checking and just guessing. Similar thing happened to me at WOC. Must practice reading control descriptions. Didn't even run that good after that, and had a little row with the man taking one of the controls, then told Tim Tett about it which put me off and meant I ran off in the wrong direction.... Nice map though.

Orienteering race (Sheffield Chase Chase) 26:10 [5]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Sabotage I tell thee! Got to number 11, didn't immediately see the flag, then Nev Myers is going on about it not being there. After the morning shenanigans and John Rocke holding the flag at the previous control, it wasn't hard to believe him, so I just ran off to number 12. Got to the finish, reported 11 not being there, and everyone's like, um yes it was. Turns out Nev wasn't even looking for my number 11. Shane Lynch got taken out with me. Oh well. Had a relatively good race (compared to everyone else) but there was lots of hesitations, poor route choices and mistakes. In all honesty, it wasn't fair running under all those levels etc as the map couldn't show what your options were, or whether stairs were going up or down, but it was fun. Tim Tett cruising round knowing where all the flags were was a bit weird cos I'd keep going past him, pause, then he'd trot back past me. Got away from Tim and Shane on the long leg to 24. Feels like I'm running alright, but too much "stuff happened" in these races to draw any conclusions or build or destroy and confidence.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Various warming up and down. Didn't warm down after the chase due to being in a boo, and because GG wanted me to do one.

Note
(rest day)

Too tired to get up for an early morning run and getting the train straight after work, so no time for training. Boo.

Running 34:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Slow run exploring a few streets in Clifton and Stoke Bishop up to circuits. Tried not to go too fast so I wouldn't be too sweaty when I got there. My room-service lasagne that I'd just eaten wasn't sitting very happily in my tummy.

Circuits 35:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Arguably did a bit better this week than 2 weeks ago, although that's probably just because I was comparing myself to Keith and not Mark this week. And there wasn't any skipping.

Wednesday Nov 18, 2009 #

Running 37:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Early morning run, fairly gentle as legs a bit sore from last night. Across the water, up to Leighwoods, across the bridge, down past Cabot Tower.

Tuesday Nov 17, 2009 #

Running 1:19:00 [4]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Ran to Bath where I was greeted by sausage and mash cooked by Mr Bown. It was good that I knew such a culinary delight was waiting for me at the end of this run as it was quite long and boring and I needed an incentive. Out on the A431 to the edge of Bristol, then along the cyclepath on the disused railway. Put a bit of effort in along here. Think it was about 12miles all in.

Monday Nov 16, 2009 #

Running 1:11:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Team Monday run with Saunders, Keith and Marky Mark. Met in Leighwoods and ran round Leigh Woods for 50mins - very nice (but quite muddy). Then nipped into Ashton Court for a cheeky extra 20mins. Keith made the mistake of telling Mark and I that we were going quite slow in the woods. Cuzza afterwards.

Orienteering race (Eyam Regional Event) 1:07:39 [4]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Had a good run with only small wobbles on the bingo-ey controls. Picked some bad lines through the heather early on, but had a good second half of the course (through the fun bit) which was enough to make sure I didn't get beaten by any dirty students. Pleased that I felt strong at the end, although it was hard to really push at any point on the course cos of the heather, mud and steep banks. My route choice from the last control to the finish looks to have paid off (I don't often win the run-in). It was a shame that they ran out of maps for Speakey - this always happens and it pisses me off. Just print more maps than you think you need and do away with a portaloo or something if you're worried about money. Grrrr. Also, since I'm getting into rant mode, I've decided that I hate these here waterproof maps we always seem to get these days. The quality of printing was so much better back in the day of map bags. Comparing my map to the one from December 04, it's amazing how much clearer the contours and everything was on the old map. Not to mention mud sticking to your map and printing rubbing off during the race.

Running 1:45:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Drove to North Rigton on t'other side of the Wharfe and did a longish run from there. Not very exciting or owt, but a change of scene and mainly on footpaths. Shed loads of styles and gates and mud so difficult to get into any kind of rhythm, especially with carrying the OS map with me, but good to get a few more miles in the legs. Skirted the edge of Harrogate before heading up a valley to Beaver Dyke Reservoir. I hope I never get too old to find names like that funny. Then Scargill Reservoir, Stainburn Moor trig, Almscliff Crags and back.

Running 38:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Morning run along the south side of the harbour, up through Ashton Court, across the bridge, and down through Clifton. Not feeling too bad.

Thursday Nov 12, 2009 #

Running 27:30 [2]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Ran to my sister's house in St George after work with my bag and dumped it off there (20mins). Then a 7.5min warm down after the following session...

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Onto the Bristol/Bath railway cycle path and along that gradually accelerating for 30mins. Through a tunnel, then forked right and got out into the sticks.

Running 27:30 [5]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Turned round, and ran back into Bristol with the aim to get back faster than I'd gone out, which I managed quite comfortably (in terms of time, but not was positively uncomfortable in terms of how I felt). Good tough sesh.

Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 #

Running 50:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Evening time pressures meant I had to do a pre-work run. Felt pretty crap. Along the big road that goes under the suspension bridge for quite a while, then up a valley onto the downs. Got a bit lost in all the mist looking for the water tower, but found it eventually, then back into town through Redland.

Running 1:12:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco

Petzl run along the harbour, through Ashton Court, along some little roads to Abbots Leigh, back across fields and through Leigh Woods a bit and then across the bridge and down through Clifton. Liked this run quite a lot.

Running 1:19:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Ran at about 9pm having eaten a pizza so felt a bit queezy in the tummy (which meant a few stops). Out up Whiteladies to Westbury, past our new flat, through Henbury, round the back of Blaise, then took a wrong turn and ended up back in Westbury rather than going through Sneyd Park. This meant I was out about 20mins longer than planned and got very cold and in a boo. On the upside it meant I allowed myself a lie-in and to skip the Tuesday morning run.

Running 1:40:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Gracie dropped me at Golden Acre Park and I ran round there, over to Bowshaws, down to the River Wharfe, to Harewood, along the wallside path and back the usual way through Wike and Shadders. Pretty much dark by the end. Very muddy run, but quite enjoyable.

Saturday Nov 7, 2009 #

Running 1:28:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Kinder run with Neil, Bakerooney and Bryn. My last run with Bryn for a while :o( Up Grindsbrook, across to ammo box, gates, Fairbrook, back edge, 3-min crossing, down. Happy days. I like running on Kinder. Felt pretty good except for the circuits-induced stiffness which made me look like a grandad when leaping from rock to rock. Got cold hands so had to borrow Rob's gloves. It's cold up in the north.

Friday Nov 6, 2009 #

Running 55:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Early morning run out along the harbour, across to t'other side, up the valley in Leigh Woods, back over suspension bridge, short loop in the downs, and back along the harbour. Felt alright.

Thursday Nov 5, 2009 #

Circuits 30:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

BOK circuits. First circuits sesh in yonks and I ate a massive burger with Marky Mark before hand, so I wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders. Hope no-one was too surprised by my lack of ability at press-ups, skipping, sit-ups etc etc (i.e. all the stations). You wouldn't expect Christiano Ronaldo to be much good at cricket. Hoping that I will improve with practice. Nice pint in nice pub afterwards in Westbury-on-Trym (nice area). Keith selling the Jukola to Marky Mark based on the number of women was amusing.

Running 10:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Warm-up/down and map memory relay thing.

Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 #

Running 1:05:00 [4]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Fairly hard run checking out more of the 'burbs. Up Gloucester Rd to Horfield then through Southmead. In a slight boo at this point as it all looked pretty crummy. Then into Westbury-on-Trym. Cheered up at this point as this was much quainter and up my street. Back across downs and down Whiteladies Rd.

Tuesday Nov 3, 2009 #

Running 1:28:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Roady run checking out suburbs of Bristol. Up Whiteladies Rd, across downs, round Sneyd Park, back across downs to Clifton, down to Hotwells, across bridge then Southville, Bedminster and Ashton Gate. Some bits nicer than others. Also stopped a few times to look in Estate Agents windows. Marky Mark later told me that I actually ran past some prime bumming spots.

Monday Nov 2, 2009 #

Running 1:36:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

My Team Monday initiation with KingTim, Akheillius, Keith, Mark Two and Mr Daniel. Fortunately for me the initiation only involved a run and dinner in the pub. Ran up from town to Tim's house, then borrowed a petzl and went off across the downs, across the suspension bridge and looped round Ashton Court. Very nice. Good pace too. Matt made his move on the way back.

Sunday Nov 1, 2009 #

Running 1:35:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

Gracie dropped me at the entrance of the Harewood Estate and I ran through there, past Emmerdale, over to Bowshaw's trig, Eccup, Adel Woods, then looped round Meanwood a bit, Tunnel How Hill and back along Street Lane. First long run in a while. Didn't feel too bad and didn't even get that bored. Windy.
