Orienteering race (Brocton Regional Event) 1:02:30 [4] 10.5 km (5:57 / km) +420m 4:58 / km
shoes: jalas o-shoes

If only all orienteering events were this close to home - got up after 10am, and still got there too early for our starts. Great to be orienteering on the Chase again. Course was a bit tougher than I expected, and I thought the bracken was a bit higher than normal... basically, I didn't feel very good running. But only a couple of minor wobbles and kept going at a reasonable pace. Felt like it was raining with the frost dripping off the trees which made me quite cold. I think the Chase needs completely remapping from scratch as there's quite a lot of detail missing/warped, but I guess that would be quite a big project!

Cracking run with Gracie in the mist on Cannock Chase. From Brocton Coppice out to Rifle Ranges and back over to Katyn Memorial. Really enjoyed running back on my "home area". Saw a few deer to boot. Just getting back to the car when got bumped into the controller and planner for tomorrow's event - busted! Wasn't cheating honest guvnor.

IW - very cold and frosty.

Note

Neighbours upstairs music blaring all evening and still going on after midnight, so up I stomped and knocked on the door, but no-one in. "Hmm, this is no good," thinks I, "but what's this big switch up on the wall outside their flat?" So I switch off their power and run back downstairs hehehehe.

Another headtorch run out along woods beside ring road, round back of Sainsburys and Homebase, into Adel Woods then up the Dales way to Eccup reservoir and over fields to Alwoodley. Back on roads mainly. Took a lot longer than I expected, the original run plan would've taken over 2hrs. Muddy and hard to see where I was going for a lot of it, but good to be off roads again.

Donned the petzl and headed out through Roundhay park, round the back of the lake, over golf course and out to Shadwell. Quite muddy and dark and cold. Saw a couple of pairs of foxes eyes looking back at me.

Running race (Abbey Dash 10km) 33:17 [5] 10.0 km (3:20 / km)
shoes: adidas swoops

Pretty happy with that - not been doing any specific, or particularly hard training recently, but knew that I was running alright so aiming for sub-34. Didn't manage to get much of a warm-up because of the crowds and having nowhere to dump my bag, but eased into it with a nice gentle 3.01 first km. Hmmm. Settled back after a couple of k's into 34 pace but cos I was ahead of par ended up well under 34. 44th position! Quite a strong field me thinks. Cold day - woke up to snow, but not windy and was warm enough once I got going - glad I wore a thermal though.

Minimal warm-up and a bit of a jog after with Gracie and Mikey.

shoes: adidas swoops

Drove out to Alwoodly and ran round Eccup Reservoir with Gracie. I did a bit of an extension and pushed a bit in some places, but generally was just trying to loosen up for tomorrow. Not sure if there was much point to the run, and it was REALLY cold, but nice and sunny and fresh.

Note

Great. HBoS have cancelled all work Christmas parties/socials even if colleagues are paying themselves because of campains by the News of the World and various radio stations. What a load of crap.

Also a load of crap was the latest offering by Derek and GG on where people might have finished in o-races had they, and everyone else, not made any mistakes. Interestingly Scott and Jamie are fast runners. And in some races I'd have come lower down if I'd had a perfect run. Which is really meaningful because there's a real chance in places like the Ukraine middle distance that everyone in the field will have perfect runs. And of course it's not like you have to slow down or anything to avoid making mistakes. I wonder what the Premier League would look like if everyone's shots on goal went in.

Running intervals 33:00 [5]
shoes: New Balance 1024

11x2mins (1min rec). As well as starting off a good old rant, I did actually do some training today. In fact, I did my first interval session since, um, June? I might check that - yes, it was on June 5th. Able to push hard and not lose form, but just no "nip" in my legs, which I suppose is unsurprising. Round Wigton and Alwoodly. Saw some chuffing expensive houses.

After I got home, tried a new route out round Wigton. Nice and flat and quiet roads - good for a little road loop. Felt a bit heavy breathing, but running ok. Ankle is sore so not gonna take it off road for a bit. Seems to be ok on the straight and flat.

Orienteering race (Skipwith District Event) 46:06 [5] 9.0 km (5:07 / km)
shoes: jalas o-shoes

First run on a Scotia map - found all of the flags so must've been alright. Flat and fast and not as wet as I expected (but still wet). Nothing very tricky and pushed hard when I could - felt great some times and a bit crap others. Gracie (on the blue course) beat me on one of the legs but I hadn't put any McFlurrys on it this time so not too worried. Nice little area with no brambles and some very runnable wood.

The run-in was an old runway and I was going so fast that I thought I might actually take off!

Running long 1:55:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops

First long run in a while. Good bit of exploring with Gracie around Harewood Estate and Wharfedale. We broke onto the Emmerdale set until some bald bloke started coming towards us and we legged it. Saw lots of deer and some Red Kites and some rabbits who had been mixing their toasties and geese and sheep and cows and all that. Harewood area was very nice with nice bits of wood - shame it seems quite private. The path along the river was a bit dull and muddy. Left Gracie just before we got back to the car and I ran the rest of the way home via Wike and Shadwell.

Orienteering race (Yorks Pud (Skipton)) 39:33 [5]
shoes: New Balance 1024

Probably the most fun I've had orienteering for a long time :o) Skipton was a lot more interesting than I expected and it was a really good course with lots of route choice and tricky bits. I even liked the dead running bits on steep cobbled roads with views of the fells in the back grounds. Half expected some boy in tight shorts to come out of some terrace and start tap-dancing. My race was good - I felt more spritely than I have done for a long long time, and I didn't make any mistakes. Looking at routegadget, Neil got a good route on 10 and nearly caught me but I stayed just in front for the rest of the course.

Running 20:00 [2]

Orienteering race (Yorks Pudding Prologue) 15:03 [5]
shoes: New Balance 1024

Sprint-o round Leeds campus. Like everyone, messed up #1 a bit, but ran well and hard after that. Managed to get a 20sec lead for the final...

Orienteering race (Yorks Pudding Final) 16:43 [5]
shoes: New Balance 1024

Long route choice legs through the detailed campus - scared at the start with everyone watching which way I went, but settled into a decent pace and didn't mess any up. We all took quite different routes - think mine on #9 lost me a bit. Knew that Schorah was always close as kept seeing him on dog-legs, but managed to keep a safe distance ahead. Really fun race.
