Orienteering race (WOC long trial) 1:30:25 [4]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Thought I'd had a good run. Lost 1.30 at a control in the butterflies but, other than that, only made very small misses and was still pushing hard at the finish. Couldn't believe it when I found out I was only 9th (again) and over 8 mins behind JD. Either I've lost some terrain fitness, or everyone else has got heaps better, or both.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: jalas o-shoes

Just a warm up. Didn't warm down cos I was in a boo.

Orienteering race (WOC sprint trial) 16:22 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Got a bit nervous before this one. Set off hard and ballsed up the 2nd control. Took a few crap routes and made another silly mistake on the one before the bridge. It was pretty easy after the first 4 controls, and I didn't really feel very good. Not at all surprised to only be 9th. Bastard Sprotty got me by 2 seconds too! No way I could've been up with the top guys though.

Note
(rest day)

Didn't have the time what with moving house and all.

Running 45:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

With Rob round some bits of Rivelin. We did 6x1min surges. Felt pretty good but some trouble breathing.

Orienteering 22:00 [4]
shoes: asics roady things

Found a few control sites from the SHAFF thingy on Oli's city centre map. It was cool, and I felt pretty good, and I got to see what was left of Gatecrasher (which wasn't very much) but that meant I had to do a bit of a detour to get round it.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

The rest of the run. I checked out Nursery Street and all round Kelham Island. Floods had gone, but shit loads of mud and dust and a general stench hanging about. Thought I'd try and scrounge a cuppa before going home, but Oli and Jenny, Rob and Clare, and Neil all weren't in.

Monday Jun 25, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Will it ever stop raining in Sheffield?

Sunday Jun 24, 2007 #

Running long 1:45:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Long cruisy run with Middleditch. From his place out to Stanage Pool, down to Hathersage, up and along Burbage and back through the mines. Felt good. Got really really wet.

Running 35:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Morning run just to confirm ankle better. Down into Rivelin and back. Felt fine.

Orienteering race (Tamworth Sprint Race) 16:36 [5] 3.4 km (4:53 / km)
shoes: asics roady things

GG and Rob didn't turn up so didn't have too much competition. Good to finally do a race again, and I felt pretty good and pushed hard all the way. No real time loss either (apart from getting my map into its map bag on the first control). Pretty straightforward orienteering once you'd picked a route choice.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Was gonna have a rest day anyway, but tweaked my ankle walking across my bedroom. Bit odd. It went away the next day anyway.

Running intervals 30:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

90x30s (15 reps) out along top of Rivelin to Sportsman and back into Fulwood. Felt ok, not great.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Out through stables, and back along Fulwood Road.

Orienteering 16:25 [5] 3.6 km (4:34 / km)
shoes: asics roady things

2x butterfly loop head-to-head sprint races. Sounds more exciting than it was (pin-punching, map without contours, school playing field - easy to see why most school kids think orienteering's shit). First one I was up against JWOC hopeful John Rocke, and just won. Second one I was up against Scottish 6-day M21S hopeful James Hargreaves, and won by even less. Wobbled a few times, but running quite strong.

Running 51:00 [3]
shoes: asics roady things

Running to and from whatever school it was at with Jimbo (and briefly, Ben and Kim).

Tuesday Jun 19, 2007 #

Running intervals 12:00 [5]
shoes: asics roady things

Down the track in the light for a change. 4x300 then 4x250. Way too quick for my legs/lungs.

Running 45:00 [3]

Monday Jun 18, 2007 #

Running 1:04:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Nice run catching up with Bakerooney round Loxley. Didn't feel that comfortable but that was probably cos we were going quite fast.

Sunday Jun 17, 2007 #

Running tempo 50:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Down to Malin Bridge, along Loxley Valley then up to Stanno and back up through the stables. Felt far better than I have done in a while.

Note

I went out to Surprise View to do some orienteering with Mike, Rich and Andy P, but when I got there I realised my o-shoes were still in Sheffield, so I went for a walk and sat on a rock and thought about stuff. Then I had an LJ's sausage and spent the afternoon asleep before picking myself up to go for a run later.

Saturday Jun 16, 2007 #

Running 1:25:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Longest run for some time. Feeling better still, but the last half hour my legs seized up, but I got Helen to stick her elbows into my painful bits and although they hurt more now it was probably for the best. Nice day with nice views but chose a flat run cos hills still hurt my hip a bit so it was a bit dull. Ran from Foxie, out through Longers, along Froggo to Wellington Monument and back along Whitey.

Running intervals 25:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Did 20mins of 90x30s up Rivelin. Pushed hard. Had to bail out of doing Coppice Track cos there was a river running down it. A57 instead. After a bit of jogging I did 5 sets of 30x30s for a larf.

Running 20:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Before, in between and after.

Thursday Jun 14, 2007 #

Running tempo 15:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Strode out a bit along Endcliffe Parks. Felt alright.

Running 50:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

The rest of the run with Sprotty. Down to Hunters Bar and up Crimicar Lane and back top of Rivelin. Got really rather damp.

Wednesday Jun 13, 2007 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Back round good ol' Rivelin with Sprotty. We had a nice catch up and before I knew it I was back home again. Pissing with rain (and still is a day later, and is forecasted to for the next couple of days). I felt much fresher than the last couple of days and didn't get too much gip from my hip.

Tuesday Jun 12, 2007 #

Running intervals 18:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

2x1mins (6 reps) cos that was the last session on my watch *sniff*. Haven't run over intensity 3 for over 2 weeks so thought I'd give it a go. Felt very flat, but moving alright. Then my hip started playing up again. Booked physio for Thursday like a good boy. Walked a bit before realising it would take ages to get back to the car so jogged. Milford Common, Brocton Coppice, German Cemetary, back down Sherbrook.

Running 38:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Went for a jog to loosen legs and keep myself awake. Come on jet-lag, give it to me. Legs didn't feel very loose and I didn't feel very awake. Actually felt quite warm. Defo more humid than Oz - I was sweating buckets. From home, out on canal to Milford, over Chase to Brocton and back via Jacob's Ladder.

Sunday Jun 10, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

If I was Ron Hill I'd have run, but I didn't. Instead I got drunk courtesy of Air Malaysia. Nearly missed my flight and nearly took Gracie's keys back to the UK with me. Had such a great time in Oz. Heading back once PhD is done.

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

A lovely goodbye Canberra run with Gracie up Ainslie taking some photos and looking at kangaroos with joeys in pouches. Cracker day, ripper views. Slight pain in leg, but not much.

Friday Jun 8, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Pretty much better. Would've been a bit of a hassle just to go for a slow jog, so not worth the effort. Will be good to pump out some training in the warm, light evenings on soft ground when I get back I guess.

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Not very exciting really round some trails in Black Mt then round Lake Ginninderra. Got in a boo cos I fell off again. Lower arm took this one. Hip felt fine on the bike. When I come back to Oz I'm gonna learn how to eat a meat and potato pie with my hands in a dignified fashion.

Running 39:00 [2]
shoes: asics roady things

With Gracie on roads at night round the one of her 2 road loops that she didn't run last night. Hip held up ok but was careful not to push it.

Orienteering 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Thought I'd jog over to Mt Painter for the Community League since it's just round the corner and I thought it'd be cool to have a map of it for my map file since I've run there quite a few times of late. In other words, I didn't go for the orienteering. Good job really cos it's not a great area and the map could be better. Took it steady to begin with but my leg started hurting after about 15mins so I had to walk up the hills and jog after that. Frustrating, cos I felt quite fresh. Then jogged home after a nice chat with Bob.

Running 21:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

The aforementioned jogging.

Running 35:00 [2]
shoes: asics roady things

Wore plenty of layers and took it slow. Leg not too bad but started aching a bit being stood up watching Jet later on. Jogged down to Aranda with Gracie, then she did some hills while I minced round a bit and jogged back home. Felt inferior.

Note
(injured)

A few days rest ain't such a bad thing. As long as that's all it ends up being.

Sunday Jun 3, 2007 #

Note
(injured)

Flew back from Tassie.

Note

Couldn't have run if I'd wanted to, but went out fishing off the Tasman Peninsula with Gracie and her Dad in their boat. Morning was a bit disappointing (no massive tunas which Bert had promised me) but more great views and saw loads of seals. Afternoon we caught loads of flatheads. Although I caught more than Gracie, she had an annoying knack of catching bigger ones than me. Then we ate them.

Running long 3:41:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Cascadia somethings

Ran the Freycinet Peninsula loop with Gracie. Up over the Hazards, along Wineglass Bay, over Mt Graham, down to Cooks Beach and back along the coast. Absolutely stunning views: one of the top 10 beaches in the world, huge granite outcrops, lots of wild forest and no people, roads or buildings. And we saw a snake! We were actually out for over 5hrs, but a run like that involves taking lots of photos and having lots of rests and eating crisps and chocolate. Hip thing a bit crap at the end.
