Barefoot running is a lot of fun, but not when you break a bone, which I probably did today. Ran the Lake Minnewanka loop, which is ridiculously rocky and beat my feet to crap. Had planned on running the benchlands near Canmore but since the goal was 3 hours, lake Minnewanka's 15.5 km one way seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Started out feeling good and running hard but the route was really rocky and the arch bruise from 2 weeks ago kept getting hammered...not fun, but not enough to turn around. After a rocky and painful 1h7min I decided that my feet were pulpy enough, so it was time to turn around. Shortly after this I caught my pinky toe on a rock or stick or something and heard a crack. No major pain, but as I continued to run, I definitely had to favour it as it felt like more than a sprain, and landing on rocks were not pleasant. We got back to the car and instead of running the remaining 40 minutes on the road, I wanted to have a look at the toe, which was swollen and purple by then. Most likely fractured to some degree. How will this affect my barefooting...not sure. 1. This is a rest week that I'm entering so that's good timing. 2. I had been planning on sewing the pinky toe to the next toe in to prevent these types of things but had delayed...I will do this now. 3. We'll see how the recovery goes, but suffice to say that I'll be wearing shoes this coming week and weekend. You've got to suffer for your art.
