Note

Thinking about the past weekend races, I think I am not enjoying orienteering with a map at 1:15000 scale. Next time, choosing only courses at 1:10000 or less. Becoming an old geezer. Inevitable.

Not as bad as yesterday, but still some notable errors. Between 6 and 7, had trouble recognizing the marshes, and then, confused as ever, went to the location of the 8th control, i guess my eyes/brain decided that THAT circle was the target to go to, rather than the adjacent control 7 circle. Small mistake in leg 9-10, went too South, intent was to go North of the marsh.

Total distance covered as by GPS: 6.95 km, ascent 560 m, descent 630 m

Wow. A bite a bit bigger than what I can chew. Was in trouble from the start. I guess my eyes can't read a map anymore, specially if it's at 1:15000. Luckily I brought with me a magnifying glass, which helped considerably. 24 minutes spent on the first control, as I made an assumption (wrong) and started cutting into the woods too early. Lost map contact, and returned to the road to re-establish. Halfway between 8 and 9, went looking for the control in totally the wrong place, and even when I was in proximity of 9, still had problems. The final snafu was in finding 18, so close, yet so not found. Luckily last week's 6-hour mini-rogaine at Ellicottville was a good physical conditioner, that I still had energy at the last controls, legs and knees still stomping strong. Yeah, found 'em all, but, BUT, no doubt, I am due for NAARP membership. Discovered there is a farm craft brewery grand opening nearby. It's time for a beer.
