Orienteering 2:56:04 [3] 9.0 mi (19:34 / mi)

COC long, BlackMagic forest, Whistler.

When they advertised an 8.6k elite course I knew I was in trouble. It ended up at 9k. In a dark forest amid fallen trees, it immediately became clear I could neither run nor read the details on the 1:15 map. And with loads of small unmapped features, hunt and hope in the circle was a disaster. Considered jacking at #2, but then switched mindset to simply enjoying being in a dramatic and beautiful place. Glad I did, just beat the cutoff time.

22/27 finishers + 17 dnf - that would be top half then :)

Running warm up/down 30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

To the event, and laughably afterwards

Orienteering race 16:47 [4] 2.6 mi (6:27 / mi)

COC Sprint - Whistler
Shambolic start, losing a minute at #3 with a wrong alley. After that, still hesitant in a deceptively tricky area. Covered shop fronts and junctions which aren't quite clear, plus tricky passages between shops - overall an excellent sprint area. Didn't even win M45, and miles back on the 21s and the GramMar boys.

Orienteering race 43:02 [4] 3.8 mi (11:19 / mi)

COC Middle. 10th One Duck Lake. Operation WorldRanking begins successfully.

Looking at the splits, it might be thought that I got caught by Mike Waddington
and we gradualy collected people to the finish, until they legged it away on the run in. However, since 2 mins is a perfectly adequate start gap in a middle race, this could not possibly have happened.

I was leading this WRE for 9 seconds.

Amazing area, tough, tricky, but firm underfoot so able to progress OK. Lots of short legs, and good visibility. James won M16, Jane ran 20min/kms.
Hot. Like 30 degrees hot.

Note

My challenge for this year is to run a few WREs, and maybe scalp a WOC athlete. Missed Eric by 23sec today :(

Running 28:00 [3] 4.0 mi (7:00 / mi)

Briskish scuttle round the Hermitage

Note

Commonwealth Games athletics. Late acquisition of tickets from Tim Smith.
Had heard dreadful stories of trains, Park and Rides, buses etc. So we drove to Hampden, parked half a mile away, and drove home. Nae bother.

Tremendous evening of athletics, superb women's 10k and 1500. Not quite the right angle to see the 110m hurdles (just beyond the finish line). Some other cool stuff, and some fat blokes running a 1500 much slower than the women.
