Running 1:30:00 [3] 10.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Unintended long run. Wanted to testrun the sprintelope, and 3 mile to Meggetland same back again and there it was. Knee had been behaving, but a wee bit sore by the end.

Orienteering race 34:18 [4] 4.5 mi (7:37 / mi)

Musselburgh Sprintelope.
Fairly routine stuff on a lovely May evening. Passed Crawford missing out a control and going through a gate in an UC fence. Caught Colin when he was a bit more diligent looking for a stolen tube than I. Neither of us found the one on the bridge. Perhaps if the bridge or some of the surrounding features had been mapped it would have helped. Together through the tricky section north of the high St, then Colin put the boot in to take a minute in easy last mile, but it wasn't enough. Hah.

Running 40:00 [2] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jogging, in out to & from Sprintelope having parked by the river.

Strength&conditioning 30:00 [2]

Orienteering race 46:02 [4] 5.3 mi (8:41 / mi)

Tamar Triple Day 3. "Course A" 13/42 [officially 2nd on M35, behind yesterday's planner Ben Chesters (M40), also running up but not running up: M40 is the same course. Go figure.]

Yesterday's 43 min winning time "long" suggested that running up on the "middle" was the right call, despite it being very hot. So it proved, a nice course, much easier than yesterday due to essentially no route choice, just having to trundle along the red line checking things off. There were many things to check off, so it was a lot of fun. Lost 1 min near the end, losing concentration, and going to check out one that wasn't mine.

Strength&conditioning 20:00 [2]

Couldn't do the hamstring one. Cramped.

Sunday May 27, 2018 #

Orienteering race 54:25 [4] 6.4 mi (8:30 / mi)

Tamar Triple day 2 Braunton Burrows "Long" 15/143 (winner <42:58).

Should be pretty happy with this, just over 10mins down with no knee problems would have been a very acceptable outcome when I entered. After yesterday hopes were a bit higher, but the splits show that even this level of roughness slows me down compared with tarmac/lawn of yesterday.

Technically very scrappy early on, couldn't easily understand the mix of paths/veg/contours, then lost 2mins in the circle at #9, but mainly steadily losing time on running speed.

Orienteering 2:15:00 [1] 8.0 mi (16:52 / mi)

Control checking at Stockhill

Orienteering race 31:36 [5] 4.0 mi (7:54 / mi)

Tamar triple Day 1 Course 3, 1/124

Ran hard, was generally clean, slowed a few times to check the map and one wobbly route choice put in extra climb. But nailed a couple of tricky route choices. Plus running a course for the lame and the blind. Even so, winning the course was completely unexpected (not having any fastest splits, however). Maybe those 35min sprintelopes are perfect training. Exeter University/Streatham is a great area and it was easily the best urban course of the year.

Running 18:00 [2] 2.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

In & out

Cycling 50:00 [4] 12.0 mi (4:10 / mi)

3 laps of Queens drive, on a haary chilled evening. Felt a bit like a fit person, whipping past people on the climb, admittedly i was pushing hard, but they were proper cyclists with fancy bikes, cleats and kit, and you don't commute round the seat. Don't ever get that feeling running nowadays. Maybe the way cyclists kit obsess makes it more satisfying.

Orienteering race 28:10 [4] 3.9 mi (7:13 / mi)

Bruntsfield Sprintelope. Pretty clean. pleased to spot the double-cross of the Western approach road route. Then stuffed up the last control, miscounting lampposts and going to the wrong seat in full view of everyone. d'oh.

LLGP.
Weekend made me think this is working, but really struggling to fit it all in.

Note

Despite being faster again this week, Meadows reps still 20sec (8%) down on last year. Carrying a bit of weight (known, fixable), worried about HMSN (unknown, unfixable), just lazy.

Orienteering race 39:15 [4] 4.6 mi (8:32 / mi)

M50 Relay, Torphantrick. Leg 2, after Colin
Ran steady with not many people about. Tim Tett passed me twice bringing the weekend total up to about 6, still couldn't keep him in sight. Saw a bit of Steve Wilson but others on the course passed me or I passed them on the gaffles. Came back 5th, but no third runner after Rob ran into a tree yesterday.

Gaffling was more than a bit bizarre: SYO won, after Clive Hallett lost a 2min lead on the last leg, which actually meant he had to run 500m further than Peel or BenS.

BOC Balmoral M55 15th, winner, Clive, 60
Really enjoyed this, excellent course, sympathetic with respect to climb, interesting and the forest seemed nicer than before. Warm and sunny.

Lost 6 mins at random #4 (202). Most people were losing time here, something wrong with map probably? A couple of 1min errors later on, once on a rocky descent, one overshoot and one offline.

Errors nowhere near enough to explain the massive time difference, felt OK running, stamina fine, just super slow at the moment.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1] 5.0 mi (24:00 / mi)

Poking around North Berwick checking sprintelope. This one will be good.

LLGP. Now onto west wing which has shorter episodes than suits. Therefore compressed. Also ate super-late

Orienteering 34:12 [4]

Bush Sprintelope, which really should be a thing.

Time includes 90 secs between start and "long" punch 10cm away. That's about 10 days/km, I know I'm unfit but...

Rayward planned a nice sprint here a few years ago, so I was hoping for more of that. But today there was an added degree of Esocianity, so wound up with shredded bloody legs, despite a bit of ambitious handwave dishonesty punching in places.

Anyway, set of with a couple of ivories on my tail, so ran hard and cleanish, modulo some bramblage and a couple of locked gates. Just held them off, on the ground and in the overalls.

Orienteering 36:53 [4] 5.0 mi (7:23 / mi)

Haddington Sprintelope.
An adventure with Oxygen debt.
Generally clean, lost maybe 30sec when I saw Colin coming back out of 9, and felt obliged to join him on the moral high ground in not taking the obvious route off the map.
Then a total self destruct on 14-15.
Misread a bush for a building approaching 14, lost 2 sec top but approached from an odd angle, then missed an alley, nothing made sense, relocated as a 180 error, not helped by a fenced woodland being mapped as an open grassy patch, ran into a dead end estate of bungalows, finally figured it out, then went up and alley blocked by a gate (as mapped), avoided the originally-planned alley which also looked blocked on the map (but apparently wasn't) and ran the long way round. Still don't understand quite what triggered all that when the rest of the time shaving 1-2 secs here and there was going so well.
