Cycling 2:30:00 [3] 40.0 mi (3:45 / mi)

Round loch Tay from fortingall to aberfeldy.

Cold, especially the preceding two hours collecting parking fees at Drummond Hill SOL. But sunny and warm enough once warmed up. Very nice route, lots of little climbs, South Tay road is a bit rough in places. Really enjoyed being out!

Orienteering 4:00:00 [1] 10.0 mi (24:00 / mi)

Cycling, walking and some gentle jogging while checking controls for the inte-area relays onn Dechmont and the INTrepid urban in Knightsridge. Long day, both events went well except for some wee b*stard nicking the unit at the station near the end. Tricky decision whether to void the leg when most runners were unaffected including the winners regardless of voiding.

Orienteering race 1:11:56 [4]

Blue Men (M50), 20th, (4th in CST) some 21mins down on Quentin. Felt heavy and slow as expected, and a bit sore, double-dosed brufen + single paracetemol being a wonderful thing. Very unstable on the slippery slopes, but actually this didn't seem so different from anyone else. The main problem was a massive error on the big climb leg, must have somehow crossed a path without noticing, got too far left and once I realised something was wrong, the undergrowth left option of going back to teh bottom or climbing at 90degrees. compounded with a small wobble at the end, that was 5 min, rapidly followed by another 3 when rashly assuming that light green would be trees, and heading for the trees. I think it meant scattered bushes. Having overshot the control, got into some very sketchy mapping beyond where the courses were meant to be.

Still, finished in the points.

Orienteering race 1:10:48 [3] 7.2 mi (9:50 / mi)

Forvie, short brown.
Knee still not up to pushing it. I though Forvie was tricky enough that trundling around clean would be OK for a good result. Not to be. Error at 8 turns out to be 3mins with hesitation and overshoot, but still 15mins down on big jon.
First time in the south end for me: it's an amazingly complicated area and the RtC lidar map is spot on. Even at 1:7500 its hard to read the map, especially the tiny formline knolls which appear as two parallel lines. But there are bits I don't understand anyway.

Cycling 2:30:00 [4] 45.0 mi (3:20 / mi)

ERC coast ride. windy
Nearly overslept and rushed direct to Dalkeith just as the (huge) group was leaving. Just got on the back. Turned out to be the 9:40 lot, and it went pretty fast out to Drem. People dropping off steadily, and lost contact just before Dirleton. Haven't quite mastered what to do when you think everyone in the group behind is hanging rather than chainganging. Once I jumped out and got and earful, later I sat tight, the guy ahead jumped out and I got dropped. Thought they'd wait at Archerfield, but it didn't happen, stopped to decoat and drink but nobody was grouping so cycled back alone into a stiff headwind. Caught a random at Seton, and offered him shelter from the wind which he gladly accepted all the way home. This left me feeling noble and weary.

Generally quite fun, nice temperature and dry.

Cycling 40:00 [2] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Sunday Oct 1, 2017 #

Orienteering 47:37 [5] 4.8 mi (9:55 / mi)

British Middle Champs on Wendover. No, really, on Wendover.

Tried hard and had a really cool run (a phrase which here means went clean and glacially slowly). Got a grandstand view on board this year's faster-than-me train featuring, inter alia, Roger Thetford, Mike Johnson, John Embury and Mark Saunders, and some folk I didn't recognise.

Course was very much of the technical=keep off the paths school, with a little bit of hole hunt. Lost ~90 sec at 8: pit by earthbank, was pretty much dead on, but aim-off failed and turned downhill instead of up.

They did an excellent job keeping us out of anything nasty, then right at the end caught me out with a cute leg that couldn't be done straight: lost 90sec and 2 places stuck in grot.

Physically, lots of faceplanting as usual, but felt exceptionally weak, not just no speed but even on the slow climbs, unlike in Cerdanya. May be a bit coldy?
