Nice course in an estate in Forres, Started with James and Nixon, and went off totally the wrong way. Ooops. Messy after that.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

I'm planning an event. The Redford Sprintelope on the glorious twelfth.
So I went out and ran round the area, checked all the legs, tested the route choices and improved it a lot. Later I'll update the map for summer conditions. This approach has much to be said for it and could usefully be adopted by other events.

Cycling 40:00 [2] 7.0 mi (5:43 / mi)

To and from Redford & to and from work.

Orienteering 43:57 [3] 3.5 mi (12:33 / mi)

O-doubs middle. Lost ~3 mins on a long leg, but generally off the pace of the leaders in tricky, rocky terrain.

Friday Jul 24, 2015 #

Orienteering race 1:09:51 [3] 5.6 mi (12:28 / mi)

O-doubs Day 2.
Completely unable to find first four controls, despite being in the circle most of the time. A not very cheeky 11mins down by 4. Ouch. Trundled safely round after that, being hyper cautious, finishing 20th. (2nd fastest from 4-finish).

Jane destroyed the field again.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Running 19:58 [3] 3.1 mi (6:26 / mi)

Parkrun. Was hoping for a decent time, ended up with a PW, 1 sec down on my first ever attempt (on sheet ice). It was pretty windy, and position (12th) was best since 2012. Started steady, hauled back to n nice group at the turn, sheltered on the way back, doing the odd stint on the front. Caught Helen Bridle with a km to go and then strung the group out before any sprint finish nonsense could happen. Kirsten Maxwell almost a minute up the road.

Running warm up/down 1:10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (1:10:01 / mi)

Parkrun, with Jane, Arrived late, left early

Running 32:00 [2] 3.5 mi (9:09 / mi)

Orienteering 1:50:00 [1] 6.0 mi (18:20 / mi)

Hanging, checking and watching at GBR Test race Torphantrick.

Note

Well that was fun. Planned the test race, hung the flags and checked, then sneaked into the woods to watch. 3-4 had a subtle use of the grain to push runners left of the line (different controls for M & W, but same idea). Good visibility, so I watched, from afar as they missed. Most gratifying of all for any planner, I got to watch Thierry and Tove miss. A perverse sort of sporting satisfaction.

Sunday Jul 5, 2015 #

Running race 2:35:56 [4] 12.8 mi (12:11 / mi)

SLMM Day 2. Only the Bunns in the "chasing" start.
Felt awful up the first hill off the campsite, but a respectable 3rd fastest split suggests James was just pushing me hard. Went sweetly after that, with good lines and pace on the longer legs, to finish a comfortable second on the day. Still crushed by the Bunns but made up the 11 min handicap on Zac Hudd to take 2nd overall by 20sec (phew). This due in no small measure to racing a small child in a red hat (Matthew Hall?) down the final hill - he won as I can't sprint, but the time we gained proved crucial.

Overall, faster than all the Wansfellers. Maybe we'll have to run "up" next year ;)

Saturday Jul 4, 2015 #

Orienteering race 3:37:20 [4] 14.2 mi (15:18 / mi)

SLMM: Bedafell, father & son class. Won the first leg by not stopping to mark the map, then goofed 2 by 4 min and 3 by 13.
Both errors due to not having adjusted to the size of the (un)mapped features on a MM map - orienteering experience proving less helpful than we'd hoped! Then stuck in some brackeny stuff and unnecessary use of crossing points lost us 20 mins on the Bunns to 5. At this stage, 106mins in, 10th and running with the Rigbys who'd caught us by 9 mins. Then we started going better, spiked a tricky crag in the mist, took a sweet line to the next, and generally went strong in the second half to get back in 2nd (third handicap). Second only to the Bunns on each of the three long legs to the end (vs 45 on our course and 75 on Wansfell). James very strong on the last hill.

2nd fastest on the day, Bunns an incredible 3:03, stretched out to an hour with David's (14) big handicap. 3 Wansfellers slightly faster than us too.

Slightly strange handicap system based on child age, when its the parents who are the limiting step.
