Orienteering 13:49 [5] 2.0 mi (6:54 / mi)
Sprint recce ("qualifier"), York Uni.
Set out to run steady and qualify while having a bit of a look around for the final. Unfortunately, accidently crossed an OOB flowerbed (probably jumped it - didn't see any flowers) and got spotted by another competitor.
I completely failed to see it. Went back and ran round, then started legging it for a bit, but ultimately figured with JK coming up I'd have to be whiter than white. Made to give up, skipped a couple of leg, then cruised the last bit anyway, cos it was fun.
Lots of folk made the same error, and if noone had said, I would never have noticed/realised. It's an impossible position for the organisers: presumably they can get permission to run across flowerbeds, so it has to be olive. And there's zillions of the damn things, so they cant tape them all. With negligible time to be gained, the pragmatic thing is just to turn a blind eye. Maybe they decided to do that, and I buggeed it up by formally protesting against myself.
Orienteering race 12:12 [5] 2.0 mi (6:06 / mi)
Sprint B Final, York University. M50, 1st Fun course, ran clean until the very last control, in a bin tidy. Having failed to learn from St,Andrews and check out the finish in advance, I stood stock still panicking about olive green patches, looking at the back end of traders vans and tapes everywhere. After 30sec of crowd-pleasing incompetance, I spotted the kite and was off again. Not enough to cost the win on M50B, but enough to give Nigel Bunn on 45B the bragging rights.
All in all, a very disappointing day personally. Jane got 7th after blowing a minute at number 1 (in sight of the start, so watched by Lorna who tucked in for 2nd). James was done in by riduculously unbalanced heats on M14 (stupid format for a race with <30 entries, but BOF only understand the unfairness of small number statistics when it comes to stripping people of ranking points).
Orienteering warm up/down 25:00 [2] 3.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
Warm up and down. Probably not enough.
