Orienteering race 1:15:25 [4] 7.5 mi (10:03 / mi)

6-day 1. Dunollie M35L 9th

Early start, but no excuse for a series of errors. Started slowly nervous about the knee, losing 30 sec at 1 , 2 mins at 2, caught by Tim Gomersall
and sped up, but then shed 3 mins at 6, 1 at 7 4 in the circle at 12, 4 more in the circle at 14. Just awful really.

Friday Jul 29, 2011 #

Running 38:00 [3] 5.5 mi (6:55 / mi)

Braids, Hermitage and back to office.

Wednesday Jul 27, 2011 #

Running 45:00 [3] 6.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Inch and Craigmillar. Little bits of something which might have been fartlek if you were feeling generous. General soreness in the legs (blame that bike) and specific L knee/R hamstring uncleverness.

Cycling 42:00 [3] 14.0 mi (3:00 / mi)

So Steve Conway's racing bike got dragged out again. It hasn't been outside for six or seven years.
This bike is evil, and it scares me. It twitches, it tries to throw you off, laughs at talk of suspension and the toes clips hold your trainers firm.
It makes weird clunking and rattling noises and doesn't like to go into gear. And it goes like the clappers. Or not at all.

Plan was three laps of Arthurs Seat, descending to Holyrood all a-wobble someone came whizzing past. Bike didn't like that, I just hung on as it went back past him, and away up the climb. Three laps later and it let me go home. Wouldn't go in the lowest gear, so out of the saddle on the steep bit.

Hard to tell if its a 3 or 4 effort session. Pushing quite hard, but easy on descents and tooling in town.

Running 39:00 [4] 5.0 mi (7:48 / mi)

Inch park. Pushed it for three laps at 5:30 per lap. Finishing at the top by the school, jog down the hill recovery (Knee/ligament thing not up to running down yet).

Bit of a shock for the heart and lungs which haven't done much of late! Hamstring tight again, knee wont straighten, but still trying to concentrate on form.

Cycling 1:15:00 [2] 17.0 mi (4:25 / mi)

Another cycle to Livi with Jane fiasco. Despite the sunshine.

Rode out to Ratho, stopped for soup at the climbing centre, then on to Pumpherston. Went up to check some quarry north of the road for mappability. Lots of offroading and contours, looked OK. Went to look on the other side for 5 mins, less interesting.

... and some b*st*rd had stolen my bike.

So, home on the train. No mapping. At least Jane's bike was still intact.

Running 55:00 [1] 5.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

Lots of faffy running. From the crime scene to Uphall station. Home from Haymarket via several bike shops. Back out to the bike coop to order a new bike. Back home again.

Ligament at back of knee still catching every step, though not getting worse. This was not clever.

Orienteering 3:00:00 [0] 8.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Mapping at Livi. walk/jog.

Wee kiddies in the sunshine.
"Which country are you from mister?"
"Edinburgh"
"Ooh that's a long way. Ma granny lives there"

Gotta love the innocent casual racism, or maybe Livingston really is a different country?

Cycling 59:00 [2] 12.0 mi (4:55 / mi)

Crappy MTB. With Jane.

Sunny day, so lets cycle out to Livingston and do some mapping.
Towpath, Water of Leith, cloud, rain, abort, West Mill Road, Colinton,
Steils, sunshine, home.

To and from Blackford + small loop

Cycling 1:20:00 [2] 12.0 mi (6:40 / mi)

Cycling with Jane. Crappy MTB. Newhailes, Leith, round Craigentinny "community woodland" ( golf course ), back round the Queens Drive with a push up the hill when someone on a proper bike with proper kit passed us.

Wednesday Jul 20, 2011 #

Cycling 45:00 [3] 10.0 mi (4:30 / mi)

Sunday Jul 17, 2011 #

Saturday Jul 16, 2011 #

Running 1:05:00 [3] 4.0 mi (16:15 / mi)

Mapping at Firrhill, and jog home once the rain came pouring down

Friday Jul 15, 2011 #

Running 37:00 [3] 5.0 mi (7:24 / mi)

Craigmillar grass again. Everything still sore, small niggle behind left knee, but some sign of legs loosening up. Really not sure whether "gentle jogging while recovering" like this helps, there's a definite junk miles theme to it but the weather is so nice who can resist?

Thursday Jul 14, 2011 #

Running 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Jogging with Jane in Colinton Dell. James training with Costorphine.

Wednesday Jul 13, 2011 #

Running 40:00 [3] 5.2 mi (7:42 / mi)

Braids up the farm track, round to clubhouse, across to carpark and back through the Hermitage.
Legs still aching, trying to maintain jogging form rather than push, but no bounce. I think it makes sense to start running again, though it isn't so much fun even on lovely days like today.

Tuesday Jul 12, 2011 #

Running 38:00 [3] 5.0 mi (7:36 / mi)

Craigmillar again. Nice soft grass. Everything still a bit sore.

Monday Jul 11, 2011 #

Running 40:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Craigmillar. Quite an effort to maintain 8mins/mile on the grass. But this definitely counts as a run.

Sunday Jul 10, 2011 #

Running 15:00 [3] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Camore forest, round the track with J&J. No spring in the legs, but no obvious problems.

Saturday Jul 9, 2011 #

Running 20:00 [2] 2.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

In two bits. 1km on the beach en route to South Ronaldsay with James in the sunshine.

Then 2km with Jane over the causway and up to the top of the island of Hanna. In a thunderstorm, heavy rain, soaked through. Serious BGR flashbacks! James had the good sense to stay with the car, but the bad sense to leave the car and stand in the p*ssing rain 'cos he thought that the car would be dangerous in lightning. Must teach him some electrostatics. (He thinks he need to watch more Top Gear)

Evening, Helmsdale. Fish and chips and an otter to watch. Nice

Friday Jul 8, 2011 #

Cycling 1:10:00 [1] 11.0 mi (6:22 / mi)

With J&J at and around Birsay. another, final, beautiful day on Orkney.

Tuesday Jul 5, 2011 #

Cycling 1:30:00 [3] 15.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

Gentle ride out from Orphir to Ring of Brodgar with wind behind. Then hard ride back into the wind to collect car to bringn J&J back home again.

Monday Jul 4, 2011 #

Cycling 4:00:00 [1] 22.0 mi (10:55 / mi)

Sanday, with J&J probably the most boring island we've been to. Flat, green, muddy beaches. Nice cycling roads. Decommissioned miniature railway.

Sunday Jul 3, 2011 #

Cycling 25:00 [1] 4.0 mi (6:15 / mi)

Some tooling on bikes

Saturday Jul 2, 2011 #

Up Ben Hope with J&J. Beautiful day, nice to see some mountains. Pretty sore coming down, but now for a proper rest week.

Friday Jul 1, 2011 #

Note

Almost a week post BGR. Recovery is quite slow. Feet, legs and ankles still swollen, quads still sore when descending steps. Toenails waiting to come off. Still not running.

Cycling 2:00:00 [3] 20.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

West of Loch ness.

Five miles tooling with J&J. 15 miles trying when they decided to head back up to the car. 2.5 hours hunting for J&J...
