Orienteering race 1:20:52 [4] **** 9.4 mi (8:36 / mi) +480m 7:25 / mi

Another glorious sunny day in the Lake district, despite a night of camping in Dave&Gillian's garden.

Day 2 on the Twin peak, 6th today, slightly cleaner but it was easier than yesterday (Speake won in ~64). Still slow, but its meant to be fun isn't it!

Meanwhile: MAJOR VICTORY !!! We won the Twin Peak quiz, bagging tins of anchovies, tuna and mussels. er, yum!

Orienteering race 1:18:29 [4] **** 9.6 mi (8:11 / mi) +370m 7:18 / mi

Surely there are few more agreeable things than running round the Lake district in beautiful sunny weather. 5th on M21L at the Twin Peaks on Place Fell.

Duncan Archer won in 65: so, I suppose running quickly might have been better.

Later went on a wild Kitchin chase around Keswick and Robinson, but there was no sign of the BGR brigade.

Friday May 29, 2009 #

Excuse 1 [3]

Stuck in meetings. biscuit reps.

Thursday May 28, 2009 #

Running tempo 24:49 [5] 4.1 mi (6:03 / mi)

KB4 Handicap. Nice warm day, bit of a headwind in the Hermitage. Slow and heavy - need speedwork and esp. sleep and rest to get back to Feb speeds. Surprised to take as long at 13 to the 2 mile point, the wind must have been stronger than I'd guessed. Brian Kirkwood caught me 30s at 3 miles, and went away on the sprint finish.

Running warm up/down 22 [2] 2.5 mi (9 / mi)

8 mins before, 14 after the dash

Orienteering race 27:30 [4] 4.5 mi (6:07 / mi)

First INT urban race, by Ken at Liberton. third, just seconds behind Ant Squire and Jonny Gallier. All good training for all these two races a day events.

Wednesday May 27, 2009 #

Orienteering (snore) 46:00 [3] 6.0 mi (7:40 / mi)

ESOC score training event on Castlelaw. A lot of the gorse and fences have gone up there now, and its become quite a good area for a runaround. still hilly though!

Tuesday May 26, 2009 #

Running intervals 1:10:00 [5] 8.5 mi (8:14 / mi)

Meadows. Still v.tired and sore from the w/e so ran with Edel - Nice evening, but it was quite windy too.
1k 3:31
1.25 4:22
1k 3:28
1.25 4.22
1k 3:28

No evidence that the extra rest helps. No short races coming up, so lack of speed is not too worrying.

Monday May 25, 2009 #

Running 54:00 [3] 7.0 mi (7:43 / mi)

Stiff, sore and knackered after the weekend. Every sensible thing points to a rest day. But the sun is shining, its a beautiful evening, so to hell with it and off we go!

Braids, Fairmile, Braidburn Pk Astley Ainsley then stop off to watch James play some cricket.

Really very agreeable - god's in his heaven and all's right with the world. Dont even feel so stiff or sore now!

Oh bugger, Meadows tomorrow...

Orienteering 52:11 [5] 7.0 mi (7:27 / mi)

Scottish Relays, leg 1, with Ant and Murray. They were British Relay Champions last year, so no pressure there then.

In fact went quite well, small error when we switched onto the second gaffling, and I had a longer one but stopped short at a wrong control (-30sec). Got back in touch after a few legs running on my own (turns out I was leading my gaffle), then a big group formed for the final loop (Tim Tett, Rossco, me, Stuart Thomson, Simon Patton appeared at speed near the end. Still 6(!) mins down on Doug Tullie, and 2 on Gareth Candy. Course was long, hard but fair. Didn't see much of people on other gaffles, so fairly easy to run as a pack, but generally felt I was hanging on (backseat driving at best!) rather than pushing the pace.

Anyway, EUOC got further and further ahead with Scotia and Hector, Ant and Murray got us back to second, thanks to a sprint finish over Rob Baker.

Combination of yesterday and today does nothing to damage my claim to being much better at relays than individuals.

That's my best ever result in the Scottish relays, which is nice. Likely my last chance to win it though...

Orienteering 3:00:00 [2] 12.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Dalrulzion controlling. Pretty much done now.

Saturday May 23, 2009 #

Orienteering race 1:15:00 [4] 8.6 mi (8:43 / mi)

M45L at the Scottish, Balavil and Dunachtonmore.
Awful. Missed #1 which was buried in unmapped juniper, failed to get into the map, missed #2 low, futzed around at #3 and #4 which were kind of hidden, then shed about 8 mins at 5 crossing a big track without noticing, and hunting in the wrong block. Found 6 (!), then decided to go over rather than round. Climb went fine, but descent was a jumble of rocks and had to be walked.

Probably about 18 mins in mistakes total. I guess its good to get them all out of the way in one go :)

Better news, James won M10A, with a rare victory over Finlay Todd. He's very pleased with his big ugly slab of wood and silvery shields (Jane isn't).

Friday May 22, 2009 #

Running 35:00 [3] 4.5 mi (7:47 / mi)

Inch Park etc. easy

Wednesday May 20, 2009 #

Cycling 30:00 [1] 6.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

This is a good ruse to pretend to be doing some training!

Orienteering 40:00 [3] 5.5 mi (7:16 / mi)

Braids and hermitage loop, running home. calves a bit sore from intervals, generally tired. Need to get some serious rest before the Scottish. Probably didn't help having a 6-day meeting until 11pm, missing dinner, but at least that WRE event is now in good shape.

Tuesday May 19, 2009 #

Running intervals 1:10:00 [5] 8.0 mi (8:45 / mi)

Meadows 4x1250 @ 4:18 19 20 17 Alone for 1-3, then chasing Edel at the end, but couldn't find the energy for a fifth. Too tired at the moment.

Cycling 2:20:00 [1] 21.0 mi (6:40 / mi)

Out on the towpath to Ratho with J&J. Very gentle, but still a long time out in the saddle. No idea if this has any training benefit - I suppose if the alternative is eating biscuits at home it probably does. Splashed out £160 on 3 lots of climbing shoes for more no-training-benefit activity in the summer...

Monday May 18, 2009 #

Running 43:00 [3] 6.0 mi (7:10 / mi)

Astley Ainslie, Blackford etc.

BatSport 1:40:00 [2]

Squash with James for 40mins, then an hour surveying Abbeyhill. Long overdue putting that mad estate on the streetmap.

OK, its not really training is it.

Sunday May 17, 2009 #

Running 52:00 [3] 7.0 mi (7:26 / mi)

Day out on Inchcolm Island

Run home from Meadowbank, including Arthur's Seat and Salisbury crags.
Funny how when I was younger it was hard work to keep running up those hills. Now I just seem to plod along, presumably much slower than I used to walk.

Saturday May 16, 2009 #

Cycling warm up/down 30:00 [1]

To and from godders house

Running 1:05:00 [3] 8.0 mi (8:07 / mi)

Pentlands from godders house. That funny contrived loop to stay out of the embargoed area - Swanston-Hillend, Caerketton Allermuir Capelaw and back on the big track

Friday May 15, 2009 #

Running intervals 45:00 [4] 6.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

5x3mins, 1 min recovery in Inch park + warm up/down jogging there and back.

Thursday May 14, 2009 #

Thursday May 7, 2009 #

Running hills 40:00 [4] 5.5 mi (7:16 / mi)

Hill reps on blackford. 6x40 sec then 4x120 sec. Felt totally wrecked, need sleep...

Wednesday May 6, 2009 #

Orienteering 1:15:00 [2] *** 7.0 mi (10:43 / mi)

Setting up, taking down, spectating and jogging to and from the Robbie Burns street race. Knees and shins still sore from w/e so no scope for proper training yet.

Tuesday May 5, 2009 #

Orienteering 35:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:45 / mi)

Steady jog around sprint course. Still sore of knees and shin from BEOC fall

Monday May 4, 2009 #

Orienteering 50:00 [1] * 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Trot/walk around street area.

Sunday May 3, 2009 #

Orienteering race 1:36:21 [4] *** 16.1 mi (5:59 / mi) +645m 5:19 / mi
shoes: Innov8

BEOC Mallards Pike & New Beechenhurst.
Bit tired still from all the travel. Started steadily and pleased to catch my 3 min man at #4. Then a big fall on 5-6. Lay there a bit pondering, scraped shin, bashed knee. continued to see if it would loosen off. Sore, lost stability on descents, but didn't obviously get worse, continue slowly and carefully. Cross road to other part of area, flatter, only trouble being ditches. Jason appears just before slag heap (which I can't easily read) and we run together for a while (including a mistake, which allows NevM55 to sneak past). Pull away through last section, as thanks to going so slowly before I don't really tie up.

1 Oliver Johnson 97:48
27 Graeme Ackland 136:21

43 ran

Highest finish for several years, but field was quite weak after top-5.

Saturday May 2, 2009 #

Orienteering race 34:45 [3] *** 4.6 mi (7:33 / mi)

pre-BEOC middle race, odd combination of sussing out the area without going too hard.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

Faffing warm up, run to / from start, etc
