Note

Dutifully went to doctors. 3 weeks is acute, not chronic, come back in a month if it still hurts (which it doesn't) or is numb. He's probably right.

Running 12:00 [2] 1.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Use it or lose it hobble home. Unstable on the hill, leg tired by the end!

Monday Apr 29, 2019 #

Running 25:00 [3] 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

In and out, use it or lose it. Nothing much happening down the left hand side, but now as well balanced without a stick as with one last weekend. No pain.

Friday Apr 26, 2019 #

Note

Osteopath Gavin Routledge. Nothing very exciting it seems. L34 slipped disc most likely, numbness unusually persistent but not extraordinary. No reflex in the knee, and everything very weak on that side. Seemed to think it was not connected with the previous calf issue, which would be very good news. Use it or lose it.

Orienteering 33:00 [3] 3.4 mi (9:42 / mi)

Relay, Minley , NN Men's short team leg 2.
Took over somewhere and trotted round the slightly fussy course in a lovely scrap of woodland by a super assembly area. Emit on a stick worked fine today for me. Came back somewhere plus several. Probably. No results so who really knows.

Jane's team were DQed then unDQed, but we left before finding out if they were offered a prize.

Note

Managed to get out all four days of the JK, remarkable in itself. Pain pretty much gone but numb below the knee on the LHS, and super unstable. Stick made a vast difference, as did the largely undergrowth-free dry terrain. Not what I'd been hoping for a fortnight ago, but better than expected a week ago. Glad I went.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Target race for the spring :(
Obviously it was never going to happen, so I didn't drag anyone out of bed, and after some faffage at the silent start explaining that
a) I was an hour late,
b) this is a walking stick,
c) I am wearing #1 and so I would like an elite map.

Walked about a dozen controls. All a bit too far apart in my state, but from what I saw it really looked like the best possible use of the area. Proper long leg with loads of route choice, fast bits, slow bits, urban leg. Shame not to have been able to do it.

Orienteering 1:25:00 [3] 6.9 mi (12:19 / mi)

JK middle. Windmill Hill
Having hobbled round yesterday, went out planning to walk round the paths and find a few flags. But actually the forest turned out to be really nice, so did some going straight stuff too, and before I knew it was well in to the course at the far end of the area. Kept trundling along and to my great surprise, actually finished the course! Left left still numb below the knee, but stick provided enough stability, and "ran" using upper legs only, which is a bit weird but left the quads satisfyingly sore at the end,

Orienteering 23:47 [2] 2.0 mi (11:53 / mi)

JK Sprint. Aldershot Barracks
Able to walk comfortably with a stick. Slightly struggling on steps and slope, walked round the sprint course on a lovely sunny day, which was fun and satisfying.

Last time I was here there was some unreadable cartography and I got randomly DQed by emitag. There were two protests. This time however the unreadable cartography was still there (15-16) and I got DQed again, but because I entered elite tomorrow I had a backup so got reinstated.

Wednesday Apr 17, 2019 #

Note

Pain subsiding, walking OK, bending not so much. Left leg still numb. Everything moves, but only with concentration, collapsed when trying to "run" a step.

Tuesday Apr 16, 2019 #

Note

am Still needing the stick, but pain easing a bit now with combined ibuprofen & paracetemol. Left leg numb, wont support weight stably coming downstairs. By pm. walked home with the stick, but didn't really need it. Acute pain now moved to lower L back. More comfortable sitting up straight

Monday Apr 15, 2019 #

Note

No progress. Walked into work with a stick, which was quite sore enough.

Sunday Apr 14, 2019 #

Note

Sciatica. Bad. Didn't get out at all, left leg numb.

Saturday Apr 13, 2019 #

Cycling 15:00 [3] 3.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Jane suggested a bike ride might be just the thing to kick start a recovery. We went up round the braids and it was all good. Then, suddenly, it wasn't. Managed t stop safely, but could only lie by the road while Jane got the car. Embarrassing how many nice people stopped, so crawled out of sight into a field.

Friday Apr 12, 2019 #

Note

Acute Sciatica. Extremely painful to bend, get up of walk (though had to walk into town for a meeting). This happened 4 years ago, and went away as quickly as it came on. Fingers crossed.

Running 1:05:00 [3] 7.0 mi (9:17 / mi)

With visitor Marius Millot from LLNL. Blackford Hermitage Braids loop wit Edinburgh doing its best to look sunny and appealing. And succeeding. Then trundle home and suddenly everything across my back was sore.

Strength&conditioning 30:00 [3]

Slightly contrived set to avoid stretching back.

Running 45:00 [2] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

In and out, there and round. Walked home with kitch

Running 28:00 [4] 3.1 mi (9:02 / mi)

357 55 59 58 57
Pleased with that, still sore from Sunday.

On further review, this seems to be the best session for 18 months! Despite being excellent conditions, I should upgrade to "very pleased with that."

Monday Apr 8, 2019 #

Running 9:00 [2] 1.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

In, up the hill. Sore as could be after yesterday, but surprisingly legs no sorer than anything else.

Running 1:10:00 [3] 8.0 mi (8:45 / mi)

Set off from work for a runaround Ellens Glen as a sprint elope preserves. Felt surprisingly good, in that kind of second half marathon shuffle way. So kept on going.

t one point, cut into some scraggy wood and tripped, suddenly transferring all weight to left leg. Which didn't collapse - this is very promising.

Strength&conditioning 10:00 [3]

Running 2:00:00 [3] 9.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

This was a horrible haary day, but after various faffage involving aborted cycle rides, waterlogged rugby pitches and drunken husbands, Claire and I ran in the Pentlands.
We got lost. In trees. On the Pentlands. It was beyond the realms of soggy and miserable, and into those of barking good fun. I remembered why I like hill running.
Panic JK long elite training for both of us. Claire was in good shape at her expected finishing time of 75mins. I was in bits an hour short of mine. On the plus side, there was mud and there were tussocks an I didn't fall over.

Strength&conditioning 35:00 [3]

Much improved at standing on left leg

Saturday Apr 6, 2019 #

Running tempo 20:31 [5] 3.1 mi (6:37 / mi)

Porty parkrun. Wet, cold and still. With JamJar 2m ahead for 4km. Perfect for pacing. James lost concentration on the third lap and we drifted back, then I pulled away from him. Pulled out 10m, which he snapped back along with 30 more in the last 400. Hey ho. Despite the slightly slower third lap, another recent-times PB :)

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2] 3.5 mi (8:34 / mi)

Faffage: Warm up, down, run to Kershaws, Run to Argyle Place to collect bike.

Missed the first one on account of the hail and associated miserableness. Ran two in a coat, then in calmed down. Welcome to British Summer Time.

Running warm up/down 48:00 [2] 5.0 mi (9:36 / mi)

Home there round back

Orienteering 1:05:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:50 / mi)

Chasing Sprint Meeting with the Adventure show at Callendar. Very positive. Test ran a draft course before the meeting and a proposed course afterwards. They were not remotely similar!

Strength&conditioning 35:00 [3] 0.0 mi
