Orienteering race 1:23:52 [3] 8.9 mi (9:25 / mi)

(ill) BOC 24/81 Quentin 63
If you have to choose a BOC to trundle round with a cold, the weird non-Euclidean metric of Brown Clee Hill is a good one. Stuffed up the first three, making no sense of the map (except on 1&2 when I actually did go there, just didn't see the flag and lost confidence). After that, all pretty nominal: tried hard enough to fall over a lot.

When we entered, there was a promise of a lidared map, in the end they just added a load more pits so that nobody could really tell if it was in the right one :(

One truly surreal leg: I spotted a wet pit was in the only bit of white for miles around. I went straight to the lone tree, punched, and went on. Onlater inspection, there is no white on the map... I really was in a different world today.

n.b. "long" champs = no leg > 5mins. Woeful.

Next up - R'lyeh urban.

Note

(ill). Not the best time to get a cold. Especially if it goes to James for his exams.

Sunday Apr 24, 2016 #

Orienteering race 51:52 [4] 5.3 mi (9:47 / mi)

WRE middle&blue at Bonskeid. 28/73. winner Hoddy in 3450.
Lovely sunny day, ran fairly hard and essentially clean. Lots of very easy short legs, and some nice longer route choice challenges. Took all the round on the path routes to avoid steep rocky rubbish, according to winsplits 48th 23rd and 37th on those, so only 22-23 was the right choice. That said, some people were losing serious time on those legs. (james 5327 :)

Orienteering race 1:16:38 [3] 7.3 mi (10:30 / mi)

Northern Champs, Mulgrave Woods 10/54 M45&50.

Won by Quentin in 6330.
Had zero expectation of what I expected to be a mud fest, but after the first few falls shoulder seemed OK. First section was brutally slippy and muddy, found everything fairly cleanly, but Neil Conway came by from -4 and ran off. Then some long track legs, and suddenly Neil was ahead, then behind, then gone, until the next slippy muddy slope. Got a very good route to 14 (climb, run along the top, descend), then missed 15 slightly to left, and went way further left binning 3+ mins.
On further inspection ... was a really good course, several options I didn't even consider at the time, lots of micro and macro route choice, two long track runs to break things up, both having enough options to catch some people out (used the tunnel both times - this was the correct answer). So, still struggling with balance. "Ran" in the more4's which have amazing studs, and weight to match, and used the wrist compass to avoid smashing the thumb-magnifier and keep hands free for crawling over logs and up slopes. Not elegant, but this was probably the right answer for me today.

Orienteering 41:20 [3] 5.6 mi (7:23 / mi)

Running 50:00 [2] 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Up to the braids. Glorious spring day, sat to admire the view for a bit. In part because L glute is sore as hell and the whole thing was a struggle.

Wednesday Apr 13, 2016 #

Orienteering race 20:00 [3] 2.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

RR sprint race at Traquair, including six controls in the (unmapped) maze. Felt OK, perhaps surprisingly, though some unknown local vettish type kept whizzing past. Jane still troubled by her knee, not there. Beaten by Ian Maxwell on the maze penalties, but ahead of James :)

Running 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Home, to collect James

Tuesday Apr 12, 2016 #

Running intervals 23:00 [3] 1.7 mi (13:32 / mi)

4*670m meadows reps in about 2:40. Horrible evening, and feeling a bit knackered.

Running 40:00 [2] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

There and back, and an abortive start around.

Monday Apr 11, 2016 #

Running 55:00 [2] 6.0 mi (9:10 / mi)

The now regular route out to the ERI and back.

Sunday Apr 10, 2016 #

Orienteering race 1:14:10 [4] 8.6 mi (8:37 / mi)

SOL 2. Culteucher and Dron

Ran down on short brown. Ran hard, ran clean except one missed turn on the green, nice open area which suits me. Shoulder basically fine.
Finished 10 mins down.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Faskally + caravan park, checking, also with Angela.

Orienteering 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Test running a course, and some legs. Looking good, if tough. Maybe I was tired.

Note

Planning TNG.
I like Max's planning, which is certainly distinctive. I wonder if planners who've grown up with urban have a different take on things like doglegs and orange-style twisting through rides in the forest. I wasn't alone in making my mistake in the "round the rides" section rather than the "read the contours" bit.

Saturday Apr 9, 2016 #

Orienteering 4:00:00 [1] 7.0 mi (34:17 / mi)

Livingston SOUL. Deans and Dechmont. Hanging, checking, bringing in and various helpings

Note

and today it all came crashing down. I put the wrong units out, I forgot units, I couldn't get gripples to work, I was slow and I was late. I was a liability to myself and had to delay the start. Sterling work by Jane, Scotia and Rob to get the show back on the road.

However, the preparation was sufficient that somehow, we got away with it.

Friday Apr 8, 2016 #

Running 50:00 [3] 6.5 mi (7:42 / mi)

Craigmillar, ERI, back through Craigmillar

Note
