Orienteering 14:32 [4] 2.1 mi (6:55 / mi)
BSOC quali, Keele. Smooth and clean, though being overtaken at running by the lame and the blind. Wrist compass proved its worth again. Qualified second. Went from 3rd to 6th on the course in the dead run to the last control and the run in :(
Orienteering race 14:29 [5] 2.1 mi (6:54 / mi)
Sprint final M50 11th. Quentin 12:37.
Disappointing. Ran harder than in the first leg, and all going OK. Caught Kenny Leitch at 13 then the world was all fences and the map was all lawns. Confused, but spotted a flag on a hedge end as required, and it had the right number. Exit route blocked by fences so all the way round I went. It turned out that there was a way through. Hello-1 minute man JayH. Game Over.
Well, lots of fences had popped up after the map printing, and in the quali they carefully told us where they were. Finals, apparently, are about dealing with the unexpected.
Even so, couldn't live with Jon et al's speed, and clean would have been 5th.
Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
Various warming up and down. Checked the area of new fences with Jon and Tess. Bah!
Everyone who organises these events lives in fear of late map changes. Even at WOC, pavement cafes were appearing and vanishing. Probably it will happen at RtC too. In the first round we were told that one leg was affected, especially on my course 2.2, and where the problem was - so that was fine. Not as good as having it on the map, but reasonable. In the final, even if they couldn't be arsed to mark the map corrections on the maps (as you might hope at at £28 a pop) surely they could have told us in the start lanes?
