Warmup / down

Orienteering race 1:26:01 [3] 9.4 mi (9:09 / mi)

SOL6. Alvie. Brown.
Much negativity in the Ackland household this week. School banned the boys from going World Schools, Jane still recovering from op, Graeme fat and fifty-two, mind fuller of RtC than navigation.
So trotted off into a nice Alvie forest on the last start. Not really navigating cleanly, but trundled along somewhere close to the red and and the flags popped up to order. Small overshoot at 11, but OK until 13 where a big empty slope contained a flag hidden in a hole. Circled for a few minutes, a couple more people joined the general millage then somebody found it and off we all went again. Rest was OK: Would have been nice if I'd had a better attitude.
Beaten by housewife for first time in 2014 :)

Orienteering race 17:57 [4] 2.2 mi (8:09 / mi)

SOUL 6 sprint at Kingussie. Pretty sh*t in all respects today.

To start with James and after with Barrable.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [2] 4.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Running tempo 27:05 [4] 4.1 mi (6:36 / mi)

KB dash. On the back of two fast runs and with it being windy not much was expected. And not much was delivered.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jog in, dash warm up & down etc.

Wednesday Sep 24, 2014 #

Orienteering 27:07 [4] 3.6 mi (7:32 / mi)

Buckstone street _o

Running 52:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:40 / mi)

Home, Buckstone, then some major faffage on realising I didn't know where the event was. Spotting Ann Haley nearing course end saved the day.

Running 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Jog home with Murray.

Tuesday Sep 23, 2014 #

Running 50:00 [2] 4.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Typical faffage

Running intervals 28:00 [5] 3.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

Dark and wet later.
Slow on the off, Colin Eades sailing away in front on the M ones.

Monday Sep 22, 2014 #

Running 56:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Monday run. Nice.

Sunday Sep 21, 2014 #

Orienteering race 48:42 [4] 7.2 mi (6:46 / mi)

London City Race 8th/150.

This has been a birthday target the last two years, but the restructuring meant no M50 course. Plus, first go at the Barbican was unlikely to be a success, despite massive mapgeeking in 2012 and revision today.

Really enjoyed it and was super clean, slowed a bit on the Barbican legs but never stopped or went wrong. Suspect the Barbican was quite straightforward.

I'm running about 20% slower than at 40, so 5.5mins down on newlywed Barrable is OK, but 5 mins back on Quentin is a reminder of what's gone.

James won M16! Jane still recovering from knee-op.

Saturday Sep 20, 2014 #

Running warm up/down 40:00 [1] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

Station, half way to event, back to station, to event, start, derisory warm down.
Jump in Martin Wilson's car and of for enkiltification and Barrable nuptuals.

Orienteering race 47:44 [4] 6.4 mi (7:27 / mi)

Guildford City Race. M40 5th/49

Went off without a glimpse of the map, lost about 30 sec at 4, 1 min at 16, 30 sec at 17 not using sneaky underpasses. Mapgeeking works :(

Satisfyingly nailed the final section in Surrey Uni (fastest through that bit).

7 sec down on Jon X

Friday Sep 19, 2014 #

Running 30:00 [3] 4.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Hermitage loop

Thursday Sep 18, 2014 #

Running 40:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Braids/Hermitage. Feeling OK, if flattened by too many O-events to organise.

Wednesday Sep 17, 2014 #

WOC test

Orienteering 4:00:00 [0] 4.0 mi (1:00:00 / mi)

Orienteering 45:00 [1] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Around Rose St, jogging and mapchecking for the RtC warm up map. Which will feature our nice sponsors Run and Become. (and not tiso :( )

Cycling 30:00 [1] 6.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

To/from work + Rose St

Monday Sep 15, 2014 #

Running 7:30 [3] 1.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Ran home in the rain, got some kit to recce Rose St. then never got back out the door.

Sunday Sep 14, 2014 #

Running 1:20:00 [3] 12.0 mi (6:40 / mi)

I went to SOL5. I got out a map, and compass, and navigated my way through unfamiliar terrain. It was brilliant, I really should do this more often.

Dunkeld Sawmill - Craig a' Barns, Rotmell Wood, Loch Ordie, Deuchney Hill. Mill Dam, random climb to laugh at some people crawling in grot, and back.

Note

Deuchney Hill has extensive low-viz wood on it. This could have been the WOC area.

Saturday Sep 13, 2014 #

Orienteering race 38:12 [4] 5.2 mi (7:21 / mi)

Falkirk Wheel: 8 person relay. Green.
Fun course, ideal for September with lots of legging it along twisty paths, only going into the woods when it got twiddly and technical. Took over in a big gap, and saw nobody until right near the end. Clean, trying as hard as my end-of-cold body would allow. 7th on the course behind 6 actual M21s (as far as I can tell).

Friday Sep 12, 2014 #

Running 40:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Blackford and Hermitage with Jegor. Made me run a tad harder than I would alone, which was good.

Thursday Sep 11, 2014 #

Running 58:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:17 / mi)

Flopped around all morning, then forgot I was meant to be ill and went out. Fresh air was nice, lungs and head weren't!

Wednesday Sep 10, 2014 #

Running 13:00 [1] 1.5 mi (8:40 / mi)

Around

Orienteering 16:04 [3] 2.1 mi (7:39 / mi)

Monday Sep 8, 2014 #

Orienteering 55:00 [3] 7.0 mi (7:51 / mi)

Out to Oxgangs and around looking at options for the sprint next week. Different to other Edinburgh areas, but a worth addition to the canon

Sunday Sep 7, 2014 #

Orienteering race 43:51 [3] 4.2 mi (10:26 / mi)

Middle Champs. Not really into it at all today, and 2 mins hole hunting in the circle at #2 got me off on the wrong tack. After that followed unmapped tracks through the bracken to 27 (of 31!) controls, and once into a neck deep patch of bracken/brambles which didn't have a control in it, but did have me in it for a couple of minutes.

Won by Clive in a stupendous 29min. I can find maybe 8mins of errors in my run, the rest is speed.

More fool me. This sort of compass&pacing Middle is so boring at the best of times, and several years ago I promised never to go orienteering in England in September again.

Running 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

various jogging around, warming up/down etc.

Saturday Sep 6, 2014 #

Orienteering 14:32 [4] 2.1 mi (6:55 / mi)

BSOC quali, Keele. Smooth and clean, though being overtaken at running by the lame and the blind. Wrist compass proved its worth again. Qualified second. Went from 3rd to 6th on the course in the dead run to the last control and the run in :(

Orienteering race 14:29 [5] 2.1 mi (6:54 / mi)

Sprint final M50 11th. Quentin 12:37.

Disappointing. Ran harder than in the first leg, and all going OK. Caught Kenny Leitch at 13 then the world was all fences and the map was all lawns. Confused, but spotted a flag on a hedge end as required, and it had the right number. Exit route blocked by fences so all the way round I went. It turned out that there was a way through. Hello-1 minute man JayH. Game Over.

Well, lots of fences had popped up after the map printing, and in the quali they carefully told us where they were. Finals, apparently, are about dealing with the unexpected.

Even so, couldn't live with Jon et al's speed, and clean would have been 5th.

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Various warming up and down. Checked the area of new fences with Jon and Tess. Bah!

Everyone who organises these events lives in fear of late map changes. Even at WOC, pavement cafes were appearing and vanishing. Probably it will happen at RtC too. In the first round we were told that one leg was affected, especially on my course 2.2, and where the problem was - so that was fine. Not as good as having it on the map, but reasonable. In the final, even if they couldn't be arsed to mark the map corrections on the maps (as you might hope at at £28 a pop) surely they could have told us in the start lanes?

Running 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jog home before driving to Knutsford.

Thursday Sep 4, 2014 #

Cycling warm up/down 45:00 [2] 7.0 mi (6:26 / mi)

To work, Oxgangs, home

Orienteering 38:00 [3] 5.0 mi (7:36 / mi)

Test running at Oxgangs for Pat's event. More Urban than sprint, needs some work, now Ian set the bar quite high.

Wednesday Sep 3, 2014 #

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Derisory warm up

Orienteering race 22:00 [4] 3.1 mi (7:06 / mi)

Sprint at HW. Super course by Ian Pyrah, much fun. Tried out a wrist compass which was a resounding success (didn't look at it once).

Tuesday Sep 2, 2014 #

Running 55:00 [2] 5.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

Lab home Meadows lap home

Running intervals 28:00 [4] 3.1 mi (9:02 / mi)

Running 55:00 [3] 7.0 mi (7:51 / mi)

Steady run out around Oxgangs. Could do with legs being a bit less sore by the weekend.
