Orienteering race 40:06 [4] 4.2 mi (9:33 / mi) +185m 8:24 / mi

West Point middle distance race. Black Rock Forest. Red course, 2nd behind Joe Brautigam.

Nice to be running again. Didn't feel great, but finish sniffing and blowing in reasonable shape. Slight wobble at #1 while getting into the mao, thereafter pretty clean. Beautiful cool day with the woods in great condition. Passed Samantha Saeger somewhere, when she recaught me again near the end I realised how slow I was moving.

Orienteering race 19:10 [4] 2.5 mi (7:40 / mi)

USMAOC sprint race at Round Pond. Red. 2nd again, this time behind Sam.

After a couple of hours milling in the sunshine, up and at 'em again for a forest sprint. Almost entirely in the woods.

Pushed fairly hard, but undone by a couple of poor route choices adding extra climb mid-race. Caught Clem McGrath soon after half way (Blue and Red combined): he had picked up a knock and tailed me home.

A bit of jogging round afterward. Not quite there yet but I think this cold is on the way out. Finally.

Dinner with Campbells and Wilsons.

note: It is 22 years since I last ran this meet, and although I only lived in the US for 3 year I still feel a great affinity with the O-scene here. People are great and so friendly, its weird that it somehow feels like coming home.

Running 32:00 [2] 3.5 mi (9:09 / mi)

Early morning jog in SF, King George hotel to that obligatory climb on Lombard, and back. Cold still productive but head clearer.

Orienteering race 1:24:36 [4] 8.8 mi (9:37 / mi)

JK Slieve Croob M35 9th
Another super race, big variety from previous days, technical moor today.
Started steady on a big hilly area, but to no avail. After 30 mins the wheels came off, and it was a death march to the finish. Moral of the story - dont race with a cold.

Orienteering race 1:24:00 [4]

JK M35 6th

Another fantastic course at Tyrelia on sanddunes. Completely blew number 1 (-5mins) as did most other people - it took a while to get into the map (5m contours, ridges didnt really show up). Then pretty clean, but couldn't keep it up. Got vv tired near the end, and chucked in another stupid 5minuter just wandering vaguely hoping to fall into an easy control just after a gate. It was hot, others were struggling, at the time I thought that's why I couldn't get the distance.

Orienteering race 14:38 [3] 2.2 mi (6:39 / mi)

Intense sprint race at Stranmillis. 3rd on M35. Many, many controls and little chance to get running. Very tricky, and great fun. So perfect for a dicky hammy and the sniffy fag end of a cold.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Bit of jogging befoe and after the race.

Also spent two hours doing commentary, which in fact consisted of interviewing the elite leaders in their raceleaders chairs. Quite good fun. Craney won, win Pippa and Sarah tying the womens. Great stuff

Excuse 1 [0]

Cold. Builders filling the house with dust. Surprisingly crap today, lecturing in a fug.

Excuse 1 [0]

Cold. Builders filling the house with dust.

Sunday Apr 17, 2011 #

Cycling 35:00 [1] 7.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

CAT (or slower). Out to the Stable Bar and back with J&J.

I am now wrecked. Hamstring playing up, foot sore, shoulder playing up and a cold coming on. So nothing terminal, and there will be no problem resting up for the JK.

Saturday Apr 16, 2011 #

Orienteering 5:00:00 [1] 15.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Taping, testing and checking at Drummond.

Orienteering 45:00 [3] 6.4 mi (7:02 / mi)

Test run of a course at Drummond. Hamstring still playing up so just jogging, but its very hard not to go fast here!

Friday Apr 15, 2011 #

Excuse warm up/down 10:00 [1] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jog home. Hamstring could be better. could also be worse...

Thursday Apr 14, 2011 #

Running 8:00 [3] 1.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Long day. Paper deadlines.
Run home to see if I can go training at Corstorphine.
Can't.

Wednesday Apr 13, 2011 #

Orienteering 17:00 [3] 3.0 mi (5:40 / mi)

Tried a bit of urban from work out through Astlie Ainsley. Hamstring, which has been niggling for weeks, tightened up sharply after a while. Stopped and walked home. Didn't even have a pen for map updates.

Tuesday Apr 12, 2011 #

Running 54:00 [4] 6.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Stuck at a course in town today, so pick off some intervals on the way home. Sunny, blue skies, and perishing cold! ran 2x2km (7:15s) feling a bit shite. So headed back, but met Toni setting up. Chatted for a bit, then did 3x1km O-intervals. Felt much better. Bike home.

Monday Apr 11, 2011 #

Running 52:00 [3] 7.0 mi (7:26 / mi)

Run home on a seven miler, basically the Monday run cut back from the pond, and so missing the final hill. Felt pretty good.

Orienteering race 42:50 [4] 5.9 mi (7:16 / mi)

Shockingly poor run off an early start in the British middle.
Long leg off the start, but couldn't make any sense of the map, slow and hesitant despite essentially running the direct line to the control. Then could make no sense around a platform at 2. Eventually figured I must have mped at 1 and be in completely the wrong bit of wood, so returned to check, but it was OK. I'd now lost 5 minutes. So decided to ignore the map and just use bearings and streams. Generally Ok, except a couple of attempts to find and use the paths, once (15) running totally the wrong way down a big track mapped with a too-long ride symbol, then crossing a huge track without spotting it (17) I suspect it was actually a veg boundary.

Shame really, nice forest and generally well planned course (apart from the five controls following a stream). No doubt that the unexpected long leg off the start helped catch me out - fair cop.

Last time I ran in Southdowns I was bamboozed by the three-contour junctions: but other people seem to cope, so I really need to run a bit more in the south to figure out what they're playing at.

James (1st) had no such problems and Jane (2nd) also did well, once she got clear of the unmapped green where she was floundering en route to 1.

GG won the men's, Clare Ward took a thumping win on the women's,

Orienteering race 18:20 [4] 3.0 mi (6:07 / mi)

BOC sprint qualifier.

Excellent campus course round Brighton and Sussex University. Safely through without flaying myself too badly, but depressingly far down on the leader 1440 and Ray Ward M35 1740.

Orienteering race 18:04 [4] 3.0 mi (6:01 / mi)

Another great course in Sussex Uni. Pushing harder this time, but a few wobbles. Still, a complete shock to get passed by Matt Mahr 2/3rds of the way round. Basically not running fast enough. Kicked in after that, and pulled back an insufficient 48 seconds.

James took gold in a small field, Jane took silver, and I was seventh fastest on M35...
...but it is a bizarre competition. Rog and Barrable were not allowed to count because they'd ticked "21" on the entry form (its the same course). Mark Ford got DQed for missing a half circle somewhere. Geoff Ellis was done in by only counting the second race, and Matt was deemed too foreign. So once the BOF ocracy had done with all that, only Ray Ward (who won it on the run-in) and David Alcock were left ahead, and I got a very cheap bronze medal!

Murray and Hollie won the open races, Murray coming up from 5th to first over the last 3 minutes. Hollie comfortably.

Excuse 1 [0]

Travel day. One taxi, six trains, one tram, one underground and a bus. Plus about three miles walked carrying two rucksacks. Aussios, Lyon Paris (NEA) London Crawley. you can't fly to Gatwick from Paris :(

Thursday Apr 7, 2011 #

Running 1:00:00 [3] 8.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Steady run from Aussois to the monolithe and back, via various trails

Wednesday Apr 6, 2011 #

Cross Country skifalling 3:00:00 [1] 5.0 mi (36:00 / mi)

Downhill really, but the falling is relevant. Pleasant for a couple of hours, then got tired/stressed.

Unspecified 2:00:00 [1] 0.5 mi (3:59:54 / mi)

Via ferrata at Aussois.
Guide was happy to take one child (James) without going away from the
"difficile" route. Plan was the guide would lead, James would be next in case he needed help...we all roped up in order. unfortunately at about half way the guy at the very back threw a bit of a wobbly, so the French guide had to attend to him. I guess he didn't explain this well, so James just led the second half of the climb himself!
Very much fun: nobody died.

Tuesday Apr 5, 2011 #

Unspecified 24:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

pre-breakfast jog. Remember that I don't like early running, even at altitude.

Running intervals 45:00 [4] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

5x 3min 1 min recovery, 3 min jog, 1x3mins.

4 reps on hilly rough grassland by Aussois, one rep up a rooty track, one back down again. Lovely.

Monday Apr 4, 2011 #

Running 1:55:00 [3] 10.0 mi (11:30 / mi)

Long run from Aussios. started well, climbing in forest roads, then hit some intermittant snow. Trying to find route down, hit GR5 markers which dropped into a snowy ravine and appeared to stop. After some rummaging, decided to climb back to main track, then found a nice contouring trail which led to the Monolithe se Salieres. v. impressive. From there, about 15min back on the main track to Aussios

Sunday Apr 3, 2011 #

Running 10:00 [1] 1.5 mi (6:40 / mi)

With J&J for a train in Lyon. Failed.

Running 35:00 [3] 5.0 mi (7:00 / mi)

Evening run around Aussios, no map, which is a shame as it would be urban fun.
Also some jogging with James down from an abortive Hike with J&J in some boring forest.

Saturday Apr 2, 2011 #

Running 28:00 [2] 4.0 mi (7:00 / mi)

Astley Ainsley, blackford loop, before flying out to Lyon. Feeling a bit better.
