Running 40:00 [2] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Run into Victoria from the motel, and around the bay. Lots of people and ped. lights.

Orienteering race 1:08:32 [3] 5.8 mi (11:49 / mi)

WCOC Long M45 2nd
Same area as yesterday, but in a much rougher and greener section. Struggled to progress, a couple of 2 min errors, but well beaten by Anders Asp today (~9 mins, and every leg but the one where he made a 4 minute error).

Orienteering race 44:59 [4] 5.1 mi (8:49 / mi)

WCOC Middle Saniston Creek, Savona. M21E 9th *
WRE collection round 3.

Decent run in great area west of Kamloops. Clean and steady through the first half, catching 2min man Anders Asp at the spectator. Got away from him with a better route choice, but then made a 1 min error and was a bit scrappy on the last loop.

But...

It was somehow inevitable after my recent rantings on here that I would fall foul of an SI bug. The stick didn't register at #25, no flash no beep, I had a couple of goes, no joy. I had a short look, and didn't spot the punch hanging inside the kite. Not too bothered, just assumed the unit was dead. But it wasn't, nobody else had a problem, and nor did I when I went back.

Really frustrating. Normally I don't care about results, but no results, no WR points :(.

Note

On the plus side, James made a solid debut as an elite, finishing in a respectable 56mins.

Orienteering race 23:34 [4] 2.4 mi (9:49 / mi)

WCOC Sprint, Kamloops bike park.
With leg 1 featuring a 10 contour climb up a desert escarpment, this was a rather different sprint from Whistler. Lots of climb in a barren landscape with odd trees and twisty bike trails to complement the contours and crags. Different, but once again I managed to stuff it up with big and small mistakes leaving me 5:14 behind at #8. Fairly sweet after that, finishing 5:08 down, but still not quite enough for even the M45 victory.

Orienteering warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Practice map and carpark.

Orienteering 14:04 [4] 2.4 mi (5:52 / mi)

Rerun the W21E course at Whistler. So much fun, and ran clean now I understand how the area works. James ran M21E at the same time

Hiking 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

300m climb up to Joffre Lake. Beautiful.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3] 9.0 mi (6:40 / mi)

Lost Lake MTB again.

Boat-related 1:00:00 [1] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Green Lake and "River of Golden Dreams (sic)"

"Swimming" 5:00 [3] 0.01 mi (8:22:55 / mi)

Tried to swim to platform in Lost Lake. Got out of depth. Remembered can't swim. Panic and flap back to shore

Orienteering race 30:26 [4] 3.5 mi (8:42 / mi)

Lost Lake Relay with J&J, 1st 6-8 points (we had 8).
Felt like someone had been running in my legs yesterday. Big miss at 1, and people kept running past like I was standing still. Strangely, I pulled us from 3rd to 1st, so they may not have been heading the right way :)

Cycling 1:00:00 [3] 8.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Lost Lake MTB. Wearily

Orienteering 2:56:04 [3] 9.0 mi (19:34 / mi)

COC long, BlackMagic forest, Whistler.

When they advertised an 8.6k elite course I knew I was in trouble. It ended up at 9k. In a dark forest amid fallen trees, it immediately became clear I could neither run nor read the details on the 1:15 map. And with loads of small unmapped features, hunt and hope in the circle was a disaster. Considered jacking at #2, but then switched mindset to simply enjoying being in a dramatic and beautiful place. Glad I did, just beat the cutoff time.

22/27 finishers + 17 dnf - that would be top half then :)

Running warm up/down 30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

To the event, and laughably afterwards

Orienteering race 16:47 [4] 2.6 mi (6:27 / mi)

COC Sprint - Whistler
Shambolic start, losing a minute at #3 with a wrong alley. After that, still hesitant in a deceptively tricky area. Covered shop fronts and junctions which aren't quite clear, plus tricky passages between shops - overall an excellent sprint area. Didn't even win M45, and miles back on the 21s and the GramMar boys.

Orienteering race 43:02 [4] 3.8 mi (11:19 / mi)

COC Middle. 10th One Duck Lake. Operation WorldRanking begins successfully.

Looking at the splits, it might be thought that I got caught by Mike Waddington
and we gradualy collected people to the finish, until they legged it away on the run in. However, since 2 mins is a perfectly adequate start gap in a middle race, this could not possibly have happened.

I was leading this WRE for 9 seconds.

Amazing area, tough, tricky, but firm underfoot so able to progress OK. Lots of short legs, and good visibility. James won M16, Jane ran 20min/kms.
Hot. Like 30 degrees hot.

Note

My challenge for this year is to run a few WREs, and maybe scalp a WOC athlete. Missed Eric by 23sec today :(
