AT from RT 301, Fahnestock State Park, to Bear Mt with a out and back to Anthony's Nose. Ran for half hour to catch up with a group of 4, then hiked with them for an hour 20. Decided to run ahead and glad I did. The trail is fairly flat and easy running - many sections of old road and not too many steep climbs. Figured I also had time to visit Anthony's Nose, where there was no view to be found. The run across the BM Bridge was nice and it looked like the sky was beginning to clear so I decided to tack on a few more miles and hump it up to the tower on top of Bear Mt. I started the ascent behind the Overlook Lodge and found a trail to a water tower which led to an old horse trail which dead ended in some laurel. From there I picked my way up, over and through the laurel and rock faces to ultimately reach the auto road that brought me to the top. By now the clouds were clearing and the sun was shining. After 5 hours of running through the fog I was greeted with a not so bad view from the top of Bear Mt. Finished by descending the recently rebuilt AT to the Inn. Relaxed by the fire inside with a beer and leftover pizza. A very fine ultra long day. Next week Dover.
