I have wanted to do this ride ever since I knew it could be done. planning to do it for a year, but never had time. had time today. arranged for a pick up in NYC and everything was set.
hit the north section of the Putnam County trailway at 8 and I was off. Fantastic tour of Putnam and westchester counties and a few boroughs. Seems everybody and their mother was out today. Navigating the unmarked road sections was only slightly more difficult than weaving around dogs and kids. There were a few road sections where I had no clue on which way to go, but I figured it out without too much extra distance. Southern section was a bit more challenging and I ultimately asked a woman for directions and she gladly guided me through to Van Cortlandt Park and then beyond into manhattan. Crossed the Broadway bridge and finally made it to the west side and the Henry Hudson rec path. Even more people here and some more close encounters with dogs, rollerbladers and strollers. At about 80th street? I once again took a wrong turn and ended up in the Boat basin cafe. Last time was during the Balance Bar 24hr AR. I decided to cut across the big island and head to central park where there were more dogs, bikes and runners to dodge. I chased a few roadies around for a lap and a half while breaking for the occasional bike cart and horse buggy. At one point there was a woman flat out on the pavement from a apparent collision with a bike.
I was overwhelmed by the number of people out today. I must have passed (both directions) about 3000 people today.
Next time I will be looking for some company. Let me know if you are interested.
