NAVSTOCK RAID!!
What a great day for the Salomon Bobkittens! Leanimal and I were like a well-oiled machine out there on the trails and in the woods, and our hardwork and training and experience paid-off with a first ever all-female win at a GHO Adventure event!

The successful day started off with us putting our heads together (and coordinating our matching outfits) and planning great routes on the maps that we'd already recieved. Lucky for us, we were familiar with the map that we got at the start line as it was the location of last year's Navstock night-O.

The starting countdown ended and we chased Grizzly Bender and the Foreigners down the trail. The Foreigners went for the more aggressive uphill route while we and GB decided to stay low. We cruised throught the first 6 controls without a problem and ended up getting dropped by GB but figured that since we emerged from the trails at the exact same time as the Foreigners we must be doing okay!

The next section was smooth for us despite almost mising the giant western rockpile and we came into CP10 just behind the leaders. Lee bagged 10A and 10C while I went out to 10B and 10D. We quickly filled up on water (it was soooo hot!!) and continued on toward Walk The Line. Just past CP 12 we found a shiny white control card on the trail. Lee and I hmm'd and haww'd over it for a few minutes, but finally decided to be good bobkittens and give it back to its rightful owners instead of burying it in the sandy trail for it to never be found. The Grizzly Benders still owe each of us a beer!!! :)

Walking the line went well, and soon we were up on Horseshoe Valley road with GB in the dead heat of midday. As hard as it was to hustle up that road in the scortching sunlight, I knew the quicker we got out of the sun the better off we'd be! So, by the time Lee and I started looking for elusive deer lawn ornaments and aboriginal statues we were running in second place. When we arrived back at the ski chalet, Wil (of the foreigners) was just starting his RUN up the ski hill so we weren't that far behind! I can't say that I followed Wil's lead by running, but I got up and down that hill as quickly as possible before I handed off the sweaty control card to Leanimal and she attacked the second peak. The mud section was disapointingly dry, however, I considered pushing Bender into the damp creek as he looked a little warm and clean but decided to hold off on the pranks for now since I figured that may negate the beer he owed me.

Lee and I headed off on the southern map to start off the Rogaine. I don't have the maps in front of me here, so I can't comment too much on the details of our route choice, but we continued to have stellar nav and work well together for some clean and quick decisions. I was hurting on the way back as we ran along the southern side of Horseshoe Valley road. Leanimal was truly shining here as I breathed through my momentary light-headedness, and instead of heading back to the chalet for more water we decided to push through and grab what we could on the north side after a momentary stop at the creek to soak our hats. I felt much better once we moved back into the shade and got some more fluids in me. It think we went back and forth with the pukies throughout the day but we obviously managed ourselves well since neither of us really had any problems.

One mistake on the north rogaine map cost us about 10min of thinking/hesitation time so we had to drop one of the controls we were planning on grabbing on our way back, but in our tired states we didn't really care.

We finished off with just under 10min to spare (I think?) before the 6hr cutoff.

Leanimal is a spectacular teamate: Confident, decisive, and able to put up with my bull.....I think the key to our success is open communication and the ability to check egos in order to make the best decisions or move beyond our errors. Thanks Leanimal!! You're the best! And also a special thanks to Salomon for enabling us to look so good out there! ;)

Thank you thank you thank you to all the organizers, planners, and vetters. I know how much work was required to run this race and it is very much appreciated!

Running 55:00 [2]

Awesome easy run this morning on hard packed trails and roads. Had my new road shoes on and they felt light and cushionny and fast. I felt like a champ and it made me love running again. Also stopped for a stretch along the way to losen up the legs.
