Orienteering race 33:00 [3] 2.0 mi (16:30 / mi)
shoes: OROC

NAOC sprint today.

This has been the best USA meet I have ever attended. All I can say is thanks to DVOA and all the others, who made it happen. The standard for A-meets has been set. It's hard to see that anyone soon can equal it.

As for my competition, this sprint was a reversal of the clean courses I had run on the other two days. Tried a bit of jogging and it really affected the navigation. Would have done better walking. As my heart rate rose my senses lessened. Made some dumb decisions I would normally avoid making. When the course veered from the cabin area to the open woods I ran off in an odd direction. At another point I missed turning on a trail that had become a marshy area, even though I knew exactly where I was. So I think that I will have to again learn to navigate while running. More insight is needed about how the new heart affects my cognitive abilities.

Orienteering race 1:33:00 [3] 3.49 mi (26:39 / mi)
shoes: OROC

A gorgeous fall day, leaves are at peak color. Ah, to be orienteering today, quite emotional. Saw many old friends and met a bunch of new people too.
Walking the long course went quite well. No real errors. Some dubious route choices, but I always knew where I was. Learned early to stay out of the marshes. The wetness was not an Issue, but the thorns were entangling. After the first two controls only made the marsh mistake once more on control 13. The first route I saw was the dirt road route which wound around and seemed to add some climb. instead I opted for a shorter and more technical plan. It was working fine until I realized I was going to go through the same thorny area I had already unhappily visited on the first two controls.
Lost quite a bit of time to the road runners on this one. My result today had me further back towards the end of the pack. Was a joyous day all around.

Orienteering race 54:00 [3] 2.6 mi (20:46 / mi)
shoes: OROC

The MIddle course at NAOC. Since I was walking this very technical course became much easier. My only significant error was on control 6 when I drifted right and had to slow down to figure out where I was. Otherwise knew where I was Lon he map. Competitively Imwas quite surprised to be in the top hanf of the Brown B course. I guess most of the runners were making errors. Avoided the rain while out on the course, but it poured about 30 minutes after finishing. Got to see many old friends and fellow competitors. Geat woods, great courses, wonderful organization. DVOA has set a standard that will be hard to match.

Orienteering 1:45:00 [1] 2.6 mi (40:23 / mi)
shoes: OROC

At NAOC. Walked the Model event with Leslie. Nice forest except for a few viney areas. Seemed pretty easy while slowly walking and picking out feature. See what happens tomorrow with the pressure of competition.

Walking 44:00 [3] 2.0 mi (22:00 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Kanada

Morning walk with Charlie, Rhonda and Sassy on trails through the woods. Beautiful morning, everything perfect.

Running 13:32 [4] 1.0 mi (13:32 / mi)
shoes: OROC

Leslie has been encouraging me to run a comtinous mile. so after getting back to the hooise I donned my O shoes and running shorts we went back into the woods to see if I could complete it. After the first .4 miles I wasn't sure if I could finish. But with Sassy leading the way And Leslie following I gutted it out in 13:32. HR reached 127 about two minutes after finishing. With the heart pounding I did another 200m sprint back to the house.

Orienteering 23:54 [3] 1.09 mi (21:56 / mi)
shoes: OROC

This afternoon ran/walked a sprint course that Charlie had set on his property. Quite fun and good practice for the weekend. Made two significany errors. The first of about 1 minute when I mistakened unmapped rocks for the control boulder cluster. the second of about 2 minutes on control 5 when I took a risky route through thick woods instead of following the paths. Was able to run a bit of the trails. This evening another great dinner from Rhonda, plus some interesting conversation about Italy, Guido Brunetti and family,

Walking 39:00 [1] 1.7 mi (22:56 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Kanada

Drove through PA, NY and CT to Charlie & Rhonda Deweese's place. Gorgeous drive through peak foliage. Although Charlie was at a business meeting in Washington, Rhona took us on a hike around their acreage. Beautiful woods, marshes, a lake with Blue Heron nests and beaver dams. it was great to see this fabulous place after years of hearing about it.
