Note
(injured)

confirmed today. Deap Vein thrombosos or otherwise know as blood clots in my lower calf. Made it through the desert without and scorpions, spiders or snake only to get carried out on the airplane ride home.

Not sure what the long term prognosis is for training for the next 6 months

Note

Back from UAE. Its midnight and I can't sleep. my internal clock is still all screwed up so I will post my log for the race. i think that we were all a bit dissapointed with the result because there is a number of things that we could have done better and been top ten. We made a few real rookie mistakes and the format was tough to get used to as well. It was a hard race for me because I think that I was just worn out after a long year. The field was very competetive. Many of the top teams didn't go to worlds and Desert winds didn't do any other races.

The teams above us were fast as hell. It was a good experience being around them and seeing what pros can do. One needs a good humbling now and then.

bike race (mtn) 1:00:15 [5] 12.0 km (5:01 / km) +2513ft 3:48 / km

straight up the paved road to the top of the mtn. I was towed by Matt and RVG. focused on staying on their wheels and not using the tow. i was worked at the end.

Running race (trail) 2:12:52 [4] 14.0 km (9:29 / km) +984ft 8:34 / km

final run across the mountains and then back to the start

bike race (mtn) 47:06 [4] 27.0 km (1:45 / km)

final crazy peleton. no way to make up the 1 minute or the 1:30 on the teams ahead of us. dissapointing as all we could do is try not to get hurt of have a mechanical.

Running race (trail) 23:33:00 [4] 62.2 mi (22:43 / mi) +10016ft 19:43 / mi

the big sand box. I have never seen so much sand. the dunes were mountains. the N side of them were generally hard and the S side deep soft sand. So climbing the S side was always hard to do. Once again, no nav just follow the trail. real boring. This was another unbelievably stunning place.

Kayaking race (sea kayak) 9:02:44 [4] 50.0 mi (10:51 / mi)

Nice long paddle. Started before sunrise and paddling into the rising sun. Little fish were jumping all over the boat. mari and I drafted off RVG and Matt all day. My brain was fried. Worked hard but looking at the pics from the top teams, they were fall over spent when they finished. Beautiful place to paddle

bike race (mtn) 1:59:53 [5] 47.0 km (2:33 / km) +1411ft 2:26 / km

Another mass bike start and large squirly peleton. very scary. After five miles came around a corner and the control was on the other side. didn't know it was coming. RVG got in and out and Matt, Mari and I got stuck in the croud were people were actually covering the punch hole with their hands so that nobody could punch. By the time it was over we were spread out. We though mari made it out and was with the pelaton so we pushed hard to catch it. We were told by a photographer that she was ahead. toward the end we were told by the same photograph that she was behind. We went back and things were not good. On top of the we were penalized 15 minutes for having a LFD teammate.

Kayaking race (sea kayak) 3:39:42 [4] 18.2 mi (12:04 / mi)

another screwed up start. We started with our sails up. We agreed to raft up but didn't. Mari and I got ahead because our sails had engages with we put on our skirts. We lost contact and RVg went back to the start. they caught us by the first control. good paddle after that. Mari and I drafted. We paddled a small lopp and then headed out to the desert Isl. they cancelled a cp because of rough seas. Too bad.

bike race (mtn) 25:00 [3] 16.0 km (1:34 / km)

Mass start of the ABAC. This would be the case for all bike starts. Everybody on pavement in a scary paceline with some idiots on tow. We stayed in the lead pelaton. i was scared as hell of crashing with all the crazy swerving.

Kayaking race (sea kayak) 1:25:00 [3] 13.0 km (6:32 / km)

We were second or third in the water. the boats had stupid sails that had to be down at the start. Within the first 20 minutes we were passed by 5-6 teams. around the backside of the island there was a 1/2 mile isthmus that was 100m across. I chose to portage. As we came across the other side it was clear that we were ahead of the leader but the put in was tank traps instead of sand like the take out. Back the way we came and at least 10 more minutes back.

From this experience we should have learned this...The races is all about pushing as hard as possible and just follow the leader. No nav, no choices, no other strategy. unless you are in the front, you just follow the footsteps, tires tracks or wake. This format really sucks.

Running race (road) 53:32 [4] 10.0 km (5:21 / km)
shoes: Asics GT 2110

run around the island. the maps are not maps but gogle earth pics. There was no GPS for this section so we actually caught and passed a few teams.

bike intervals (spin class) 45:00 [5]

good hard spin class. quality much higher with rested legs. worked them real hard

Saturday Dec 6, 2008 #

Running race (trail) 41:26 [4] 4.0 km (10:22 / km)
shoes: highlander

Green river cc O meet. nice course good layout. not alot of hard nav but good miz of bushwacking and full on running. legs still extremely heavy. a little fresher could have shaved a couple of minutes. no significant errors but by the time I went out there was a pretty clear cattle path.
