Big Day. Day Three

Up a 3AM packed and headed out to Fall city. I stashed the boat and all the paddle gear. Locked boat to bike rack.
Drove to Muklteo and prepared to ride back to Fall City.
paddled for ever back to car.
My whole body is now beat. I was going to hit some hills today but didn't get how until this morning.

wildlife count
bald eagle
golden eagle
beaver
osprey

bike (road) 2:13:00 [3] 41.5 mi (3:12 / mi) +1150ft 3:07 / mi
shoes: Armadillo

skinny tires, pavement, no hills, and no box of rocks on my back. Fun fast ride from the car out to the boat. easy peasy lemon squeese me (commute to work).

Kayaking long (sea kayak) 11:10:00 [3] 63.0 mi (10:38 / mi)

The real deal. I expected that the river would be moving 2-3 mph...NOT On top of that there was a steady 20 mph up river breeze. At 25 miles (4hrs) I stopped for a break and realized that it was going to be a long slog. i didn't stop or get out until the finish. I knew it would be tight getting to my car before dark.

When i finally got to the sound, it was rough. I came out at naval station Everett. The 74 carrier was in port (I think it was the Stenis or Lincoln..Hayes?). Pretty impressive site. For some reason it had its flight deck full of planes. There was a coast guard cutter on station so I had to go out and around. On top of that it was getting dark and there was lots of ship traffic. This was a real screw up on my part. 3 foot swells piroetting off of all the piers and my wet suit was in the hatch. i was beat and could only just paddle and brace and get across the bay as fast a possible.

Day Two

Glenn's Fabulous Western Washington Stage Race

I'm still firmly in the lead.

Today's stage was a short paddled followed by a long easy low elevation run.

Today was the day for wildlife. One fox on the beach in the morning and a black bear in the afternoon.

tomorrow stage inspired by Robin. bike with a bad ass paddle

Kayaking (sea kayak) 2:18:00 [3] 12.2 mi (11:19 / mi)

early morning paddle. pushed off at 6:3o. the water was glass, the tide was out. worked the shoreline against the current. great morning.

Running long (trail) 4:02:00 [3] 22.7 mi (10:40 / mi) +2100ft 9:48 / mi

wanted a nice flat long run. I dropped the girls off at camp ion Duvall and headed to North Bend. Did an out and back on the CCC road/trail. Started at the gate and ran out to the the middle fork campground. easy going and flat. negative split. 2:04/1:58 and that was with a bit of a slow down right at the end. Felt great the whole time. overall time was slow but just wanted to be on my feet and take it easy. TraIl is real nice and in great shape.

Mountain Bike hills (Fire Roads) 5:30:00 [3] 43.0 mi (7:40 / mi) +8200ft 6:30 / mi
shoes: FSA SL-XC Michelin Dry

Inspired by DJ

I have been wanting to do this for a couple of years and never got it done. DJ did it so i had to try.

Started at the intersection of Tiger Mtn and Hobart Rds. Headed up TMR about a mile to a little connector that links up with the poo-poo rd. Turned east and headed for Iverson.
Took Iverson to the main tiger mtn road.
Up to the towers at the end. Passed Preston in 28 minutes (from Iverson connector) I kept it in the middle ring the whole way.
Through the towers and looped back (DJ do you know where the road continues too) (18mins from the gate to the top tower) DJ, I didn't have any gears to spare.
Back to preston and down to the road.
Turned right up to the saddle
continued up to the top of of ???(Tiger Mtn) (32mins to the saddle). i was bonking on the way up and need to stop for a rest.
saw the trail that drops of the north side and connects with preston. On the way down I saw a guy riding up. Most mtn bike riders out there don't just ride hills so I asked him about the trail and sure enough he was going to ride down it. To me it looked steep and cheap but the guy was on a hardtail and said it was good. RVG? next time we're trying it.
Anyway back down the main tiger mtn road to the inverson connector and they out the road to poo-poo point. I was really bonking and out of water on the final climb.
Hung out and watched the gliders
on the way back i took a right and an old road down. passed some horse people and they said take the trail so i would stay away from some nudist colony. Big mistake this horse trailwas a disaster and I took and nice digger in mud invested horse crap. nice way to finish.

my entire route is here

Kayaking (Sea Kayak) 30:00 [3] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

Last day we paddled across lake wenatchee to climb dirty face. On the way across we saw a large group that was rocking it. I saw at least one 4 person boat. We attempted to talk to them but they moved off at a very fast rate. Later I found out the it was a elite paddle camp. The GH team was there as well as Steve Wort.

Running (Trail) 3:10:00 [3] 9.4 mi (20:13 / mi) +4250ft 14:09 / mi

Climbed drityface with mathew. once again I carried the box of rocks to even the score. Pushed him hard up the hill and he didn't really complain. he ran down most of the way. great views and lots of bugs.

shoes: Armadillo

loop. bottom bracket going out so i nursed it a bit. Wanted to break 2hr. nice day bit of rain.

Note

So our team for the best of the west AR fell apart. Bit dissapointed. It would have been a great race. So now I am focused making next week a 7 day stage race. Thinking about he following legs in no particular order

double hurricane ridge/gold creek run
suntop double/first half WR50 run
st helens road ride/ run around the mtn
DJ's tiger ride/tiger run
tenerific/bessimer ride followed by mt si run
paddle from fall city to muklteo then ride back

Any takers?

Note

Great weekend. got lots done. Left home at about 5AM on Friday and just got back last night. Out to eastern WA to work on trioba scouting and getting some time in on foot with large scale map on snow. much like what canada race will be. Found lots of snow above 5k mostly on northern flanks. Got up to almost 7k.

Saturday got a ride in on some territory that will hopefully be a 4-6hr sprint during the big race. This place was even better than I expected. After that i drove to stanwood for the family pig roast.

Sunday raftg guide training in the morning and climbed Mt. WA in the afternoon with RVG. We have agreed that instead of always hitting couger Tiger et al, will will pick a different peak along the I-90 corridor and see how many we can get this summer.

Trainer/Spin intervals (spin class) 50:00 [4]

spin class. A little off with some unfamiliar music

Kayaking (rafting) 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Not sure what to expect in the upcoming canadian race. It is looking alot like a seat of the pants crazy shit operation (like baja the year we lost the boat). So I am getting some rafting skills at OAC. two hours of classroom and 1-2 hrs on the water. We did some scouting and heading into each rapid I would tell him my plan and then we would critique after we got through. Finished with raft roll practice - tough shit and cold.

Running hills (trail) 2:35:00 [3] 8.8 mi (17:37 / mi) +3330ft 12:58 / mi

met up with RVG. I was going to suggest something new like TMT but he went all out and offered up mt WA. fun climb next we will do defiance or some other. Any suggestions?

Mountain Bike (trail) 2:30:00 [3] 22.0 mi (6:49 / mi) +2640ft 6:07 / mi

My intent was to just use the area for a short trek section, locate a few controls and move back to some big riding further in But it was loaded with trails and single track so I just road and maped the trails. Still have more mapping to do.

I stupidly brought two left foot biking shoes so I rode with one bike shoe and one running shoe.

Friday Jun 12, 2009 #

Running (trail) 6:15:00 [3] 21.0 mi (17:51 / mi) +5285ft 14:25 / mi

time was a bit slow because of some deap water crossing, deap snow and hard nav. I only recorded the moving time from the gps. Drove in deep and the ran in further. Trioba is going to be great. the terrain is big and beautiful up here. seriously remote.

Kayaking race (canoe) 34:00 [4] 3.0 mi (11:20 / mi)

bike race (road) 45:00 [3] 8.4 mi (5:21 / mi) +300ft 5:11 / mi

bike sections. Had Kevin on the trailer bike. great fun

Running race (road) 45:00 [3] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

trek around greenlake. Kevin road the horse and did the steering on this one

Added Note:
The race went the wrong way around greenlake on bike. I didn't know this until the greenlake order nazis were uber pissed. even with me riding on the grass. They were swearing cursing, yelling and I think they even spat at us. I was apologizing for a while and then just gave up when the old lady on roller blades tried to take out Kevin and I with Kevin on the trailer bike.

I couldn't stand living in that order controlled world. Step out of line and it gives the power hungray a reason to obliterate you. I think that it might be a seattle thing as I have never seen so much venom displayed for a break in social order. Its like the fact that Seattle is the jaywalk ticket capital.

Trainer/Spin intervals (spin class) 50:00 [4]
