Strength Training 30:00 [3]
rhr:39 slept:8.0 weight:175lbs

slept read good. very relaxing. working on keeping the kid up during the day so he sleeps all night and last night it worked. Went to the Y to lift weights but just couldn't get into it so i called it a day. Worked on my legs and they are still beat. Hardly worth logging.

Swim 30:00 [3] 1.0 km (30:00 / km)

Last night i gave swimming tests to a bunch of boys scouts. warmed them up, gave some instructions, tested and them took an all comers. i stand undefeated but one quick little bugger needed a little tug on his shorts to slow him down a bit about halfway down the pool.

Swim 48:00 [2] 2.0 km (24:00 / km)
rhr:45 slept:9.0 weight:177lbs

Active Recovery. nice easy swim (horizontal non-impact fluid motion) Shoulders real tight from the long road bikes this weekend.

bike long (road) 4:18:41 [2] 63.0 mi (4:06 / mi) +3281ft 3:55 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Armadillo

Elevation a guess.

What a great day. Just what I needed. This was a long great easy paced ride. Cleared out the legs very nicely. I met up with brain at his hotel at 7:15. His friend who happened to be in town showed up shortly thereafter. We rode down along the water front around alki to the fauntleroy ferry where JVG met up with us. We caught the 8:30 ferry over to vashon and rode about 40 miles over there stopping for coffee and breakfast. Weather was great, pace was easy and conversational. I didn't tell anybody about each other before the ride. It is great on an easy ride like this to let people who know nothing about each other to take conversations in all directions.

JVG rode great. Ryan you need to buy her a new bike. She would rip a new one and probably improve loads. She was afraid that I didn't tell the boys about being 4 months post baby but I knew it wouldn't be a problem, and it wasn't. A few more months and she will be ready to rock.

tomorrow the legs get a well deseved rest. But the core and shoulders, that's a different story.

Running race (trail) 5:58:00 [4] 32.0 mi (11:11 / mi) +4692ft 9:49 / mi
shoes: highlander

not sure what to say about this one. need to think about it a bit. not the result I had aticipated.

Note

Here is the race report.

Sometimes, one's perception of one's self gets a little bit distorted from reality and you need an event to get it back in line. This was one of those events. One of the reasons that the individual racers on DART like to race individual events against themselves is because everything is laid bare for all teammates to view. No BS, no hiding in a tandem, just head to head competition.

Going into this race I have been training real hard and really wanted to do well and kick some ass. even tough i considered it a "B" race. In reality, there was no way that i was in any position to have a podium finish. I had 20 hours of hard training in the 6 days before the race. I only had two long runs in the month leading up to the race. My knee was injured all winter and instead of running oodles, I worked on my bike skills, and I haven't done a 50k in over a year. Duh hello, what was I thinking???

What I was thinking, after waiting in line for the one crapper for 20 minutes and finishing with 2 minutes before the start, and then starting a minute after he said go only to find myself behind a line of runners WALKING up the first hill, was I gotta get going. So I charged and just flew up the first hill and for the first couple of hours (remarkably similar to the speed workouts i have been doing). i lept like a gazell up the side of the train passing everyone but still there must be more. I must press on after wasting all that time. At 1.5 hrs i caught up with what I would find out later
with the guy who was in the 50k lead. alas, he put the pedal down and he was gone.

And then a funny thing happened. Everybody else who i had just passed started to put the pedal down. Or, was it me? Could it be? How could it be? Where did they find all this new reserve of power? Why were my legs failing me. why could I no longer run 7 minute miles over anything? and why was i starting to hurt everywhere? Could it be that all that concentric spilling wasn't specific enough to help me through the uneven and undulating surfaces of trail running? Why do my outer glutes and inner thighs hurt? and my back? what's up with that?

Ooooo as they ran by me I just hung my head low. I knew they were thinking; stupid rookie. Such a idiotic newby. Has the guy never heard of pacing himself before? I knew that he wouldn't last at that idiotic early pace. Why do i know what they were thinking? Because I have seen it before.

Well at least I took comfort that if I was suffering Aaron and RVG must be in even worse shape. That was until about 1/2 mile from the finish and i heard this yeeoow hey dude what are you doing? Are there was Aaron dancing down the train feeling and looking great. He let me hang on his coattails into the finish and RVG came in about 10 minutes later.

Those guys had a great race. It was RVG's first 50k. They played it well. Went out at an easy pace and just built it up. i should have done the same but one of my weaknesses is to get caught up in the moment when the gun goes off and just go biserk.

bike long (road) 3:53:00 [2] 60.0 mi (3:53 / mi) +1640ft 3:47 / mi
rhr:45 slept:6.0 shoes: Armadillo

Easy ride with Brian from hammer. Conversational pace. Got to talk with him and I asked a bizillian questions about his history and his company. Had a great ride and the weather turned out unbelievably nice. Maybe a bit too long for the cap forest race tomorrow but i feel great.

we rode arounf lake washington. elevation is a guess. anybodty have the correct amount.

Swim 44:30 [3] 2.0 km (22:15 / km)
rhr:49 slept:6.0 weight:172lbs

Slept like crap. Weight dropped. do other have a weight spike after long hard weekends? Do you know what causes it? Water retention?

Was going to be an easy recovery type swim (horizontal fluid exercise). felt pretty good and a woman beside me was doing intervals so I tried to keep up with her within my 2k set.

Strength Training 30:00 [3]

felt real tired after swimming. Accumulted fatigue building up. worked on core. Need to save the legs for this weekend.

Kayaking (sea kayak) 2:35:00 [3] 12.26 mi (12:39 / mi)

this was a typical messed up winter paddle. it was abosulte crap out. I can tell ya that a low brace really works. Miles, RVG, and Aaron we need to practice that roll in the real stuff. i thought for sure I was going down. The navy has a barge on the south side of the isl and the waves bounce back and piroet. realll fun.

Running (soccer) 1:00:00 [3]
rhr:53 slept:8.0

I am beat today. The had no energy for sustained hard efforts. I just took it easy and played the ball. Even my shoulders are sore from yesterday. not sure how the bike raceis going to go tonight.

bike race (mountain) 1:05:00 [5] 12.0 mi (5:25 / mi)

The was awesome. best race yet. i went in feeling weak and tired and a bit sick. i thought that I would give it my best shot at the hole and then just let riders pass. I got in 5th with my teammate ross in the lead and two other guys I knew couldn't last. so I just hammered down. Maybe got past by a couple but reclaimed and passed the guys in front of me. Even passed a bunch of experts that went ott minutes ahead of us. At the end I had worked my way up through 3 guys and there was one good rider left. the course came out of the trail downhill into the grass and the up/down sandy hills to the finish. I had be thinking about this the last couple of laps. Toward the end of the trail I let the guy get some distance and then I put er in the big ring and hammered. When I came out onto the grass I had the guy and blew past him. He had an incredulous look on his face as he thought that he had his place to the finish. I knew that he couldn't take me in the sand because there was only one line and I had it Hah.

Third overall and this was the very first race in 4 years of trying that I didn't get lapped by the experts. just sick riding. i learned that I am as good as any of the sport and some of the experts at tech riding. I would always bog down behind some guys in the tech stuff, but when the flat open uphill passing area opens up, it was hard for me to make my move. I need to get MO POWER.

I will tell you this. NOTHING beats a turner with tubeless michelins running at 25. nothing. Just cutting the trail up sweet and smooth

Strength Training 45:00 [3]

easy run back to scout meeting cool down

Swim 50:00 [2] 2.0 km (25:00 / km)
rhr:50 slept:9.5 weight:177lbs

easy recovery swim. Shoulders stiff and need to be worked out. weight up through the roof. Could be water retention from this weekend. slept real good last night. I love being worked and not waking up in the middle of the night.

bike (mountain) 55:00 [1] 9.5 mi (5:47 / mi)

convinced the girls to go out on their first bike of the season. I rode my mtn bime while they were on road bikes. Real easy recovery spin to keep the blood flowing before the next two days hard intervals

Sunday Apr 20, 2008 #

Kayaking (sea kayak) 5:26:00 [3] 26.33 mi (12:23 / mi)
rhr:50 slept:8.0

Paddled around Bainbridge Island. started out from Manchester SP with Matt. did a clockwise loop. Heading up the west side it was cold and snowing. It continued the whole way up. at times it was almost a white out. Matt turned back after and hour. slack through Agate passage was at 11:30 and I hit it at 12:30. On the way up i was hoping that it wouldn't be too bad but it sucked. It was a head down and grind event. There was a small sailboat motoring through with about a 10 horse in the center of the channel were the flood was the strongest I worked the eddies and was able to keep up with him for about two miles.

Rounding the northern point i thought the current would never end. I began questioning my ability when I couldn't get it over 4.5mph. So i stopped at a marine SP and peed, ate and took off my paddle jacket. The sun came out and it looked like it was going to stay. I got going again and innedately found the current and was cruising steady at 6. Some big crossings and there was a bit of chop. A little concerned all by myself after reading the kayak disaster book so I just concentrated until i got around the southern point an hour later. It was calm and I was bonking so I drifted and ate/drank when a very large stellar sea lion breached and growled at me. These guys are very territorial and kinda not very nice so i put the pedal down and move 1/4 of a mile and began eating again. Apparently this wasn't far enough because he came at me again. So this time I jkust put everything away and hammer the last few miles home.

Warning A Rant Is Coming
Car was dead when I got back. When i looked at the battery it was clear that it had broken loose and shifted into the power stearing pump pulley. which ground a hole into the side of the battery which then spewed battery acid all over everything. When I left for baja I had a new pump installed and everything was inperfect working order. Now I need a new batttery, power stearing pump, and new hoses to replace those eaten up by battery acid. That's why i don't like using my car for support.

Running long (trail) 3:55:00 [3] 20.0 mi (11:45 / mi) +3281ft 10:10 / mi
rhr:42 slept:9.0 shoes: highlander

i woke up this morning and my RHR had dropped back to normal. I think that my body is telling me I'm go to press hard. It is strange how it can be elevated and then just drop back to normal. Iwent out running at green mtn and it was a great day. Trail was in fabulous shape. no snow only a little mud. I was not real fast but i ran all the hills and noticed that i didn't have any pain. i can't remember when the last time i ran with no pain of some type. I need to get my speed and stregth up. Next weekend is the cap forest 55k. i will give that a hard push and see how i do. It will be the last long run before DW.

mileage was a bit of a guess because the gps lost contact a bunch. First time i ran in these shoes and they were real nice. Confy and no rock pains.

Past two days I have been binging again. need to get that reigned in.

rhr:54 slept:8.5

woke up feeling great. good sleep. i have been doing well with the food lately. woke up with a blister on my hand from the paddle yesterday. Been a long time since I had one of those.

Strength Training 50:00 [3]

core and shoulders

Thursday Apr 17, 2008 #

Swim 45:00 [3] 2.0 km (22:30 / km)
rhr:56 slept:9.0 weight:175lbs

Nice recovery type swim. Time to start working harder on the swim

Strength Training 30:00 [3]

legs...hard to get back into it. nice day out and lifting just doesn't seem like fun.

Kayaking (sea kayak) 2:29:00 [3] 12.15 mi (12:16 / mi)

Paddle around fox island. fun chop to play in. Like mtn biking tight twisties. going out the current was against and I thought that I wouldn't make it back before dark. coming through the passage the current was rocking with me and I was moving 8+mph

Wednesday Apr 16, 2008 #

Note
rhr:54 slept:9.0

i slept real well last night. nothing like a hard workout to ensure a sound sleep. RHR dropped a bit as well.

Running intervals (soccer) 45:00 [4]

first dau back in a while say a guy i haven't seen in a couple of years. good workout. Wonder how I will fair tonight at the worlds champs.

bike race (mountain) 1:05:00 [4] 12.0 mi (5:25 / mi)

weds night champs. Some bonehead decided to crash on the road runup and i ended up in the back of the pack spending the first two laps trying to clear through heavy traffic. At least i was well rested for the last two laps.

It really sucked starting in the back. Next week i am gunning for the hole.

Midweek intensity now over time to get back to tempo and distance.

Tuesday Apr 15, 2008 #

Swim 51:00 [3] 2.0 km (25:30 / km)
rhr:60 slept:9.0 weight:176lbs

I think I swam more but last count. RHr still high.

Running intervals (track) 1:25:00 [4] 10.15 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: Asics GT 2110

Went out to do yasso's 8s. I saw that angleman did a 40 minute warmup before his set so i decided to lengthen my warmup. did a loop around the block that ended up being 46 minutes making about 8:30. I got back to the track and the hish team was just finishing up. i wonder what they think when an old guy shows up huffing and puffing.

I was hoping to do 8 sets but ran out of time. I wish I had my HRM. I wamted to target 3:00 given my currwent state aand long warm up. I ran 2:54 too fast, 3:04, 3:00, 3:08, 3:07, 3:02.

i was worn out and I am still not 100%. Next week I'll get 8 done.

Note

Saturday's belling ham paddle is here:

http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=18...

I got a call from roger today. He will be home in a few weeks for good. He and Yummay have had enough for a while. Time to start planning on racing with him and in some of his fall races.

Monday Apr 14, 2008 #

Kayaking (sea kayak) 1:11:20 [3] 6.0 mi (11:53 / mi)

wow what a ride. Had the wind at my back BOTh directions???? I ran with the wind/waves on the way into the bay having fun playing. whebn I got to the turn, a huge thunder head came in from the north and the leading edge created a very strong wind at my back. Not as many waves but still very strong wind.

Sunday Apr 13, 2008 #

bike (mountain) 2:41:00 [3] 19.0 mi (8:28 / mi)

ridin Galbraith. first time and this pplace is great. It is a mix of cap forest, banner and a little seatac thrown in. Good climbing and bomber trail riding. took it mellow on the stunts.

Saturday Apr 12, 2008 #

Running (trail) 4:10:00 [3] 18.0 mi (13:53 / mi) +4265ft 11:21 / mi
shoes: Continental divide 10

Chuckunut center with RVg, Aaron, JVG, Frenchy and Seegs. Great run beautiful day. shoes wore down my right ankle.

Kayaking (sea kayak) 1:06:00 [3] 5.6 mi (11:47 / mi)

Easy paddle after run. i was hoping to get in a few hours but the day was too nice and lounged in the sun.

Thursday Apr 10, 2008 #

Swim 47:00 [3] 2.0 km (23:30 / km)
rhr:59 slept:8.0 weight:173lbs

Easy swim. thought that i would do weights after but decided to call it. HART is correct about recovery. My RHR is 20bp above normal. My body is telling me to mellow out. I am surprised that my weight is only 173 after the bigne of the last two weeks. Most likely loss of muscle and addition of fat. Time to start over again.

Running (trail) 53:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:36 / mi)
shoes: Continental divide 10

run at disco with JVG and RVG before REI presentation. easy pace, except for the stairs and mileage a guess.

Wednesday Apr 9, 2008 #

bike race (mountain) 45:00 [4] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
rhr:56 slept:8.0

I love this sport. Riding AR is a waste of a good Turner and michelin tires. The race was short because it is still early and they start at 7 and race until dark but that was ok with me. the course was great. Gut busting intensity and real nice technical riding. The bike just cut through it like a hot knife through butter. I am not the best rider but I can really enjoy riding hard on technical with a great bike. I will be back every weds night and will only get better.

Tuesday Apr 8, 2008 #

Note
rhr:53 slept:8.0

i am so wacked out. I am sure that there is something not right with me. All i can manage is sleeping and eating. I have no energy. Every day i feel like i have a hangover complete with head spins and nausiousnes.

I am back on full loaded coffee. I don't care about the caffiene i just need something to get me going.

yoga 1:00:00 [3]

Not a very good session. I was very weak, completely inflexable, and i had no balance. I was doing so badly that I just assumed the butterfly pose in the back. The instruction asked me what the heck I was doing and I gave her the ooowaaaa as I dropped the guy in front of me with the karate kid butterfly move. I am now banned from class for a month.

Monday Apr 7, 2008 #

Note
rhr:58 slept:8.0

No junk food at all yesterday. yah baby. but still too many calories. RHR is 15 bp above normal. Need to get my body back to normal. Full week of training ahead but nothing too intense.

The forecast is for lots of paddling and running.

Sunday Apr 6, 2008 #

bike race (mountain) 1:33:00 [4] 15.0 mi (6:12 / mi)

The best way to flush out the crap is to work it out hard. Went to the south seatac indie race. huge field. didn't hit the hole shot well On the first lap some moron tried to pass without letting me know and we both went down. Later in the second lap another did the same thing. With just an on your left I would have let them pass. So I got pretty bloody and dropped many places. But I worked hard and will be back on weds nights for more.

normally this would be a 5 but my body was still too fatigued to work up a good sustained threshold effort.

i still field hung over...maybe that was from flemming wedding last night.

Saturday Apr 5, 2008 #

Running (trail) 1:39:00 [3] 9.54 mi (10:23 / mi)
shoes: Hardrock

Run at cougar with Aaron and RVG. Still feel messed up and my eating habits aren't helping. I felt like i was sweating toxic crap and the smells and noises out my arse were not very pleasant. Three pounds of cookies really messes up a body.

I ate good all day and I am committed to purging my body and getting health.

Friday Apr 4, 2008 #

Kayaking (sea kayak) 43:17 [2] 3.41 mi (12:42 / mi)

Real easy paddle. I can not believe how weak i still am. time to stop eating and start working.

Thursday Apr 3, 2008 #

Note

slept all day yesterday. funny how I could feel normal until I got home and then just break down.

today I cleanned gear and took care of various domestic needs. Tomorrow I will start getting back into it.
