OK event at Chisholm Creek Park, in Wichita KS
Gene was inspired to make a map and put on an event in his hometown, based on one guy who inquired last year and tried to get to one of our Lawrence events. Full props to him for doing all the work and getting this event organized. It went very well, and the guy from last year was really exited to try it and wants to continue to orienteer.
We had 17 starts which was much better than we dreaded with 4C and rain, not to mention coronavirus fears. We made some concessions, keeping people away from each other, collecting esticks in a bucket to be cleaned, lots of soap and hand sanitizer. I wish we hadn't put out food and I wish we had stayed outside to minimize crowd mixing with other patrons at the visitor center. Ah well.
I worked registration and then got out on the course. My head wasn't in the game at the start but I felt good physically. The trails were muddy and sometime running streams. Fields were the usual tall grass, and wet in some areas. I should have taken more trails around but I stuck with my default straight ahead.
I left 3 trying to go to the west side of the lake, but I took the wrong trail and it took me a while to figure out where I had come out. I ended up circling back to the main trail, which I should have done in the first place. Lost about 3 minutes here.
There were a lot of deer trails around 8 which were confusing going in and out. As I left 9, I had my map upside down and I convinced myself that I had just punched 6. So then I headed towards what I thought was 9 (but was actually 6). Somewhere soon after I figured it out and went to 10 as scheduled. Brain fart!
I should have left 11 to the north to get on the trail. Instead, I tried to cut back through the field but got pushed off line by dense vegetation. A very bad route choice!
Long run in from 12 to the finish. A lot of folks skipped the last control, thinking the finish was the last control. We gave them credit.
I met Rex Keith and his kids for the first time, and chatted with all the newcomers. The staff at the nature center were really glad to have the map and want to have more joint events. We shall see. It was fun, but 2.5 hr drive each way for a local event is a bit much...
Lunch with Fritz and Gene, then back home to have dinner with Eric and hear about his running adventure today.
