orienteer 2:10:20 [3] 10.0 km (13:02 / km) +231m 11:41 / km

There was a local event at Lake Jacomo today, but I didn't feel like driving all the way there by myself for crappy woods and a long day (Mike was teaching today). I had a lot of things to do at home (we'll be gone all day tomorrow) so I decided to orienteer close to home. I dug out an old Clinton 10K course that I ran several times in the 2011-2012 season (found a printed hard copy in the files). I didn't look at my routes from previous runs. My goal today was to be under 2 hours.

It was 4C and rainy, and the woods were really wet. I'm glad I wore my neoprene socks. I decided to try to go as straight as possible today, to get more time in the woods and also see if these routes were faster than what I had done in the past. I felt pretty good, but moved slowly through the thick woods and had some difficulties with the very old map. The trails are substantially different, and particularly affected navigation near 1, 3 and 15.

Small bobble at 1 and missed 11. I remembered a lot of the course, but I didn't remember the depression at 12. Weird.

When I realized I had been out 1:30, I tried to push it in to make it under 2 hours. And then I tried to make it under 2 hours 10 minutes. Just missed that.

I didn't review my precious routes until today (writing this Monday night). Seems like my fastest time was 1:49:17. I'm bummed that I took 20 minutes longer (all though the footing was wet and I am 6 years older). But then I looked again at my routes from the previous course, and controls 12,13 and 14 were not on that course! I knew 12 didn't look familiar! So I did run further this time. Wonder where this map came from? Strange that this was the copy I had in the files, yet I never seemed to have run this course. It is identical to other course, but just has 3 extra points. (Note: I just measured the distance and it is 10 k. The extra controls added 1.3 km).

Today's time (run #6): 2:10:18 10k (13 min/k)

Fastest time (run #5): 1:49:17 18Mar2012 8.7k (12.5 min/k)

Note

Tax night. We hit it pretty close this year: owe the Feds $140, get a $25 rebate from Kansas. I like it like that.

So of course we went up the street to Ikea afterwards, for a traditional dinner and a bit of shopping (mostly for food).

sprint drills 30:00 [1]

aerobics 30:00 [2]

We had an ice storm this morning, so Mike and I both worked from home. I had a boring webinar at lunch time, so I managed to multitask and exercise while listening.

orienteer 1:57:00 [3] 7.36 km (15:54 / km) +132m 14:35 / km

Practice course at Rockcrusher/Rockhaven map. I tried to find the control exactly, and also push the pace a bit. I did OK at the pace for the first hour, then I got tired and slowed way down. Also,I had forgotten how crappy these woods are. Tons of thorns to hang you up everywhere you turn. It sucked.

I found 1 and was on my way to 2 when I realized it was out of the park and on private land, so I skipped it.

Missed 4 a little bit, stopped too soon on 6 before figuring it out. Wandered at 9 looking for a fragment of ruined fence. Looks like I was in the center of the circle, which is good. Never did find the ruined fence.

The "field" edge to 10 was complete crap. High, thick grass, very hard to push through. I kept hoping I would cross a deer trail, but I never did.
