orienteer 1:16:21 [3] 5.6 km (13:38 / km) +115m 12:22 / km

OK event at Perry Lake, inaugural use of the map. The meet director decided to also make it a mountain bike O, which makes sense since this a mountain bike area. 7 out of 29 attendees did the mountain bike course.

Nice weather led to a decent turnout. I helped with registration and beginner's briefings, then went out on the advanced course.

I took a minute before the start to try to get my head into the game, and I think that helped. I stopped twice from 2-3 to pull a thorn out of my sock.

Picked a slow route choice to 4, although it was very easy and safe.

Long, long run to 8 and back (which course-setter Eric loves and I dislike). Very tired climbing the hill to 10, where Blair caught me.

Bad rough compass to 11, and I was sloppy a few other times today. I was not very systematic on my rough compass today, I should have paid more attention to that.

Blair punched 12 just ahead of me, and then I could tell he was taking trails all the way to the finish. I decide to go straight to see if I could keep up with him. I could and I did! Until the last bit of trail, where he blew me away.

Nice course with plenty of route choices.

Working at home on a nice day, so I decided to start my 5K training. This is a month earlier than I started last year, but I want to get better and I will miss two weeks of training while we are in Chile in April.

Took it slow. Also, ran a slightly different route, adding a loop around the Lied Center for a change. Was a lot slower this year than last (for first run). Lots of work to do this year. But I'm going to try hard because I'll be the youngster in F55-59, so I have a chance to gain more points with a good time.

orienteer 15:00 [1]

Our third "Orienteering for Women" training. We had 6 women today, even though it was below freezing. In total, we had 21 participants. Of the first 15, three women have already come to a local event. I like that percentage!

Mike and I went to Riverfront Park. Mike gave me a course he had run previously, and warned me that 4 was a pain to get to, so I skipped it.

Like yesterday, my goal was to keep moving, but today I allowed myself to look for the control and try to get it right.

This area is so flat, that every little bump stands out. I'm familiar with some of them but some others ( like the knolls at 6 and 7) I didn't know.

I should have gotten 5 correct (we use these hills a lot) but they always confuse me. As I said, there are lots of other bumps around 6 and 7, so I missed 6 the first time and 7 all together.

I cut the course short in order to meet Mike on time.
