orienteer race 6:50 [4] 0.9 km (7:36 / km) +21m 6:48 / km

Annual "Great Pumpkin" event co-hosted by OK and Ft Leavenworth Outdoor Adventures. We set the course, use our epunches. They print the maps, bring the food and prizes, pay for our OUSA insurance. They keep the rest of the money. Works out great for both of us.

It was really cold today (just about freezing at 8 am), which hurt our turnout. I worked registration to begin with, and then warmed up by running the mini course.

I saw the control for the short course as I started, and I knew it was on the short course, so it distracted me from the building I was really looking for. Doh! Huge time loss right on the first control.

Settled down after that and pushed as hard as I could. Started sucking air on the last few controls, and really slowed down the pace.

Very fun, I like the challenge of this mini course.

Then I went out on the short course. Goal was to keep moving as fast as I could and no mistakes. I succeed on both. Still had to walk up some hills, wish I had enough in me to run up. But I don't.

Fritz set the course. It was nice to have some different control locations, and nice route choice legs. He did a good job.

Day 2 of my practice A meet. I planned to do back-to-back long trail days, to be in better shape for Champs next month.I also wanted to remember how my body reacts, and my brain gets dead, at the end of two days. Also, to test different hydration/food options (I've stopped using Gatorade and Clif Bloks, so I need to see what else is needed or works).

Luckily for me, Sandy was willing to join me. We went to the river trails because 1) it had rained heavily last night and ) I wanted a fairly flat run today. Again, we did 4 min jog/1 min walk repeats.

We went all the way to the end so Sandy could see Mud Creek flowing fast. After that, we had to go up on the levee and we decided to stay there. Legs were super tired at the end. We had to go for an extra 10 minutes to reach the car (I had slowed down a lot on the way back). Great company helped make the time pass really quickly.
