orienteer 49:56 [3] 3.5 km (14:16 / km) +103m 12:27 / km

Local OK event at Rockcrusher. 18 and sunny. I worked at registration with Blair, then went out on the Long. Mike set the courses, and he specifically made it easy to cut the course short, if one was so inclined.

I went out with the plan to do the whole thing. I had trouble getting my head in the game at the start (waiting for Fritz to start ahead of me; running past Sandy and the boys on the way to 1).

Got to 1, then looked at the leg to 2: whoa! Unusual for us to have such a route choice leg at a local event (well done Mike!). I never saw the option of going south to the road. My plan was to go mostly straight but minimize climb. I didn't pay attention to where I was going after I crossed the field, and went too far south, which led to extra climb. Doh! I saw Erin and Lindsey on the way to 2, and i was trying to act cool and run through the woods, while they stuck to the trails. Of course, they beat me to the control.
I tried to look cool leaving the control, and just embarrassed myself by doing a 180 for a few steps. Must stop doing this at local events; I rarely notice other people at national events, so I don't think about them when I enter/leave a control.

Went straight to 3, and had to deal with some nasty fight at the edge of the field. I should have gone a bit south, and taken the trail along the edge of the field instead.

4 to 5 was a long trail run, no other way to do it. But for once, I was able to consider the beach option, for part of the run. Usually, the lake shore is either too muddy or the wind is bitter cold, so I had never taken this option before. It was, fun a change in pace.

After 5, it seemed like along slog up the hill. It was a warm sunny day, which sapped a lot of energy. I passed Reta on the hill (sitting down to let her HR slow down). I looked at the rest of the course and tried to decide what I should do. Overall, I was tired and not having tons of fun. And the option of stopping, getting a drink and hanging out with folks at the finish was too hard to resist. So I took the short cut option.

Note

Quiet evening, got my hair cut (and colored :) Then Chipotle for dinner in front of the TV (KU basketball game). Normally I wouldn't log such a day, but this morning, Mike and I wondered what we had done on previous Leap Years. So we checked our AP logs. And now I've added this year's entry, for posterity.

orienteer 50:58 [3] 3.17 km (16:03 / km) +87m 14:08 / km

Another spectacular day, 15, sunny and very windy. Decided to do a control picking course at Clinton. Crappy woods, with lots of thorns, so it made sense to walk and pay careful attention. I have difficulties reading stream bed contours, and sometimes my height in a reeentrant, so I tried to practice those today. Did fairly well (no markers or tapes were out)

aerobics 20:00 [2]

Did a bit of extra exercise when I got home, to make me feel less guilty when I sit and watch the Oscars and eat junk food tonight (it's a tradition, I have to do it :)
