Psycopathic 5K trail run. I have been trying to get my co-worker Becky to try orienteering, or at least trail running. I convinced her to enter this race by challenging her to see if she could beat me (she's very competitive, and in her 30's. How could she let a F50 beat her??) Convinced Mike to join us, too.
This is only my second ever trail race. I was determined not to over do it (I haven't run this far in two months). On one uphill, when I felt my hamstring getting tight, I just said "US champs" and backed off a bit (I'd rather be ready for the US O champs next month than go crazy in a local trail race).
For the record, my co-worker beat me by ~ 2 minutes. I was happy with my pace: flying downhill, slow and steady jog up hill (on the way out). Legs were tired on the way back, so lots more walking on the uphills. This is a hilly course! Also, seemed to be a bit shorter than 5K. I carried the O map so I knew what to expect along the way. Chatted with Bob Malkemas (sp?) during the course, as he passed me on the uphills and I passed him on the downhills.
Also for the record: they had chip timing, which was nice, and a photographer on the course. We receieved a mug and ball cap for our $25 entry fee. Post-race resfreshments were donouts and bagels. A few announcements of the over-all winners, and then it was over. No prizes. Attendance was ~80 folks, from age 8 to 80 (as far as I could tell). Results were posted on-site as paper print outs; no online results yet (but it's only been 4 hours).
HR monitor seems to only work only after I've generated a sweat, even though I always use Buh-Bump gel. Also tried adding some spit today, but that was no help. HR recorded as 170 late in the race; until then it was frozen at 75.
