Rode to West Campus and walked around checking some control points for next week's course. Oh my god, I forgotten how hot it can be; can I go back to Iceland ????? Felt a twinge or two in the knee; guess I'll keep up the I&I for a few days.

Was feeling very sleepy at work and wasn't sure how I would feel on the trails tonight. But I felt pretty good, like I was moving well. Everything was fine until about 25 minutes in, when I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my right knee as I stepped up. I stopped and tried to shake it out, tried a few more steps up. Still hurt, and worse, it couldn't hold my weight. F@#@, F*+$#, F#@!. This is not supposed to happen. Decided to be cautious, so I walked it in. Felt OK while walking.

Home to ice and ibuprofen. Feels fine sitting here now. We'll wait and see.

Note

Long travel day from KEF to Boston to Washington to Kansas City to Lawrence. No surprise that our bags didn't make it (until midnight or so). Nice to be home and sleeping in my Tempurpedic bed again. Don't want to go back to work tomorrow; eight days off was not quite long enough :)

More light hiking in Iceland. Today we saw an amazing lava landscape, explored a lava tube cave (Surtshellir) and watched cool waterfalls emerging from under the lava (Hraunfoss). Then we drove to the Reykannes peninsula and saw some thermal features. Another wonderful day.

Note

Nice day exploring some new (to us) areas of Iceland. Climbed extinct volcano craters at Bifrost and hiked in the hills above Holmavik. Beautiful countryside, and a relaxing day.

Or else I just tried to send it to Facebook. Sorry for the hassle; I'm doing all this on my phone

orienteer race 1:31:24 intensity: (1:18 @1) + (34:56 @2) + (55:10 @3) 4.2 km (21:46 / km) +105m 19:21 / km

Well, today was even harder than yesterday. The footing was not as soft, but there were a lot more loose rocks underfoot. Cool lava features and lots of other details made for fun technical O for the first 14 controls. I was tired, so I walked pretty slowly.

From 15 to 19 was pretty crappy terrain. Had to push through dense pines, and the semi open areas were hard to identify. I lost a lot of time on 15 and 19.

Overall, I'mglad I went out ( and survived) on this technical terrain. Organization was great and I had lots of fun meeting orienteers from around the world.

We're spending 2.5 days driving around Iceland next. don't know how often we'll have internet access.

Today's map: it was much harder than it looks:)
