orienteer race 1:18:00 [4] *** 6.2 km (12:35 / km)
ahr:160 10c

Local meet at Blue Springs. Typical terrain, typical course. I made an effort to keep moving, and not slow down or hesitate unnecessarily. Did a pretty good job. I see now that there were one or two better route choices. But overall I'm pleased with how I navigated.

One big mistake when I was thinking about running (of course, I was on a trail) instead of navigating.

Nice lunch afterwards with Gene; haven't seen him in a long time. Good to see he is able to run again.

orienteer race 1:09:42 [3] *** 5.76 km (12:06 / km)

Last run of Wyandotte short and hilly. I had no expectations for this run, just wanted to practice moving through the woods. My legs were heavy at the beginning, but felt better as I kept moving. No big mistakes, just a steady pace. Saw a lot more deer than usual; maybe because it was just before dusk?

As I approached the last control, I looked at my watch. Five minutes less than my PR; could I push it? From the last control to the finish, it is straight up (33 meters of climb in 200 meter leg). When I punched, I had three minutes until my PR. So I threw caution to the wind and actually jogged up sections of the hill. I took a perfectly straight line, pushed hard, broke out of the woods, up to the lone tree, punched my watch---broke the record by 55 seconds :)

A very nice way to end my woods training season. Time to celebrate with a box of Peeps!
