Day Five

I just missed being in the chase, thanks to my awlful showing on day three. But it's fun (for me) to start at the back of the pack, with my peers. These are the other women who are slightly overweight, and walk most of the course, especially the steep, rocky downhills.

But I also felt that I didn't really belong here, and I was hoping for a good run, to move up in the class. And I did! I had my best day in terms of minutes per k, as well as my placing behind the winner. And I moved up 10 places overall. A very satisfying way to end the Oringen.

I did OK on the course, with a 5 minute mistake on one control and a silly route choice on another. But I pushed it in the finish chute, thanks to the cheering of Mike, Sara and Ola. Thanks for the support--I really appreciated it!

I had a great time at this Oringen, especially if I convienently "forget" about day three. The hospitality and company were fantastic. The weather and scenery were amazing. And the orienteering arrangements were great. A wonderful trip. It is very sad to leave and go home to the "real" world again. But I'll be back.... :)

Day Four

Well, at least I was able to recover from day three. I had a pretty good day. I kept moving on the trails, and I was pretty clean on the navigation, with only very minor booms.

Except for one control, where I lost about two minutes because I mis-read the control code on my clue sheet. I actually found my control, but thought I was looking for a different code, so I kept looking around at every other bolder in the area. That's what happens when you get tired...

Still, this day was my best so far in minutes per K, which is a good feeling.

cycle 30:00 [3]

to the event and back

walk 20:00 [3] 2.1 km (9:31 / km)

to the start

orienteer race 1:34:27 [3] *** 3.06 km (30:52 / km)
11c

Day Three

A total disaster. I could not read the map at all, and I only found one control by orienteering to it. All others were either dumb luck, random searching, or actually following someone, which I have never done before today.

I almost quit when I took forever to find my 4th control, but I figured I came all this way, etc. So I walked the rest of the course, and kept trying to figure it out, but I never did.

This happens every so often, where I have a complete and utter mental breakdown and the map becomes jibberish. Any one who has any insight into why/when this happens, please let me know.

Tomorrow is a much needed rest day. We will spend the day with Magnus, Sanna and Moa, enjoy the scenery and friends, and recharge for Day Four.

to the start

orienteer race 59:28 [3] *** 3.52 km (16:54 / km)

Day Two

Well, I made a 5 minute mistake, by not following my own advice to pay attention on trails. There was a dense trail network, and I got on a parallel path and...

But I relocated quickly, and was clean the rest of the course. Not a bad day, but could be better.

The woods were thick and rocky at the beginning, then trails and sand pits at the end. Quite a variety, which is really nice.

Event: O-Ringen

cycle 30:00 [3]

to the event and back

walk 30:00 [2] 2.7 km (11:07 / km)

walk to the start

orienteer race 50:33 [3] 3.26 km (15:30 / km)

Day One

Today was good. I managed to relocate well when I was a bit confused on the way to the first control, which is something I wanted to work on here. I kept the mistake under 5 minutes.

However, I found my third control by pure dumb luck. I felt I was a bitt too high, so I headed down through the thick green and came upon a control, which just happened to be mine. The rest of the course was easy, flat, on trails, so I just jogged along with the crowd.
