Testing Mike's sprint course. Rode my bike to and from the start. Walked most of the course; time is approximate. My legs are tired. Time for some rest.

orienteer (field checking) 30:00 [1]

Checking my sprint course for next weekend. Walked the course, and updated the campus map, as needed. Not many changes, fortunately. Only logging part of my time out there.

Long slow day at Clinton. 10 min warm up, then 9 repeats of 8 jog/2 walk, then 10 min cool down. First rep felt tough, next few were fine, last three were tough. I was tired; but then, that was the point of this exercise, wasn't it ? :)

Time to build up some speed again. Following the same Runner's World plan, which worked well for me the first time I did it (about two years ago).

We drove my sister to the airport, and then ran at one of our old haunts, Wyandotte lake. It was hazy hot and humid. I had eaten and drunk too much this weekend, and didn't sleep enough either. So no surprise that this was a tough day for me. It helped a lot when Mike joined me after 20 minutes; the conversation made the time fly by.

First off: my Forerunner seems to be working again. Garmin technical service replied that it appeared I had a corrupt data file on my unit, and they suggested a complete reset, back to factory settings. That worked.

Beautiful day on the river trails. Cool and damp, I had the place to myself. Saw Gene, Dee and a friend jogging down town, on my way to the trails. They looked fresh on their feet. I felt fresh on my feet, too. Two solid nights of sleep must have helped.

Here is what the beginning of the trail looks like:

I got up in the middle of the night last night to go to the bathroom. When I got back into bed, I suddenly had another wicked calf cramp (ie charley horse). This was in the opposite leg from last weekend's cramp. What's going on? I think I was hydrated last night, and I've been eating more bananas lately. Any ideas?

Hope this is a limited problem....

Around the fields on west campus. I thought I could make it between thunderstorms, but no such luck. Looked like a drowned rat by the time I got home.

I hadn't jogged in two weeks, and I could tell. This was a real slog tonight.

Note

Great weekend by WCOC. Courses were excellent both days, lots of fun competition and the results were posted fast ;). Tons of thanks to the DeWitts for great food and company. Susie, I really appreciated the sandwichs. Hope I can return the favor sometime.

Glad to be heading home.

Um, do you think there is a problem with my Forerunner???? Gotta love today's track.
Edit: I noticed that my second split covered over 1000 Km! Pretty cool :)

WCOC long course at Huntington. I slept soundly, but woke up with a wicked cramp in my left calf. This was something new. Decided I must be dehydrated, so I made sure to really hydrate before the meet.

I was not ready, mentally, to go out today, so I had to work extra hard at concentrating. My goal was no big mistakes. I managed pretty well.

I was distracted around 4 by the fact that I was really, really hydrated, and I had to go. Thank goodness for large boulders!

One parallel error near 7, but I figured it our pretty quickly.

Moved a bit quicker today. Overall, a decent day.

Day 1 at WCOC. Another night of restless sleep (too many thoughts in my head, including "what ideas were listed on AP for insomnia" and random alarms going off on my phone (sorry Valerie!). Which meant I knew I would have to be careful not to blow up today.

I had no major blow ups, but I felt like I was moving in a fog the whole time. I was just not sharp. Tried to be careful on the way to 1, but didn't really have a plan. Wandered a bit. Decided to bail out to a trail, and on the way, I managed to relocate. More time lost at 4, but I relocated quickly. Too much hesitation and wandering at 5; should have relocated sooner.

I walked the whole way today. I knew if I tried to push the pace, my brain would be fried. So, the best I can say about today was I managed to avoid disaster.

No idea what happened to my GPS track. It captured total time and each split, but GPS seems to have stopped around 5. HR isn't right either. Very weird...

walk 20:00 [1]

Had lots of plans for the day, but didn't end up doing much. Had problems falling asleep, and then slept too late. Decided to see Newport. Didn't count on all the traffic; took longer than I expected to get there. Only had a short time to walk around the cliff walk, see some houses and enjoy the beach.

Then off to the DeWitts house, for lovely dinner and great company (Susie, Rick, George, Lyn, Valerie and Sandy)

Note

Travel day. Took the train from NYC back to my parent's house, then drove across the lovely state of CT to arrive in West Greenwich RI, where I will spend the night. Which I need to do, to cross RI off my states list, in my rule book. This is the last of my "drive through states". I've driven through RI many times, but never stopped before. So I decided to stay now, since I had some free time, and I was in the neighborhood, so to speak.

Tomorrow, I'll spend some time exploring the state. Nice that it's so small.

This is #46 for me. The last four: HI, MS, ND, SD.

walk 2:00:00 [1]

Lots more walking today. I decided to log a couple of hours to cover the last three days; my feet are sore. May soak them in an ice bath tonight.

Fun buying fabric today. Gorgeous fibers in just the right shades of blue and brown. Then I went to the new costume exhibit at the Met, and snoop shopping at Barneys. For some reason, not one clerk asked if I needed help. Why, don't I look like the type of person who is here to buy $600 blouse or a $3000 dress ;)

On the other hand, the clerk in the Chanel boutique at Bergdorfs asked if I needed help. He must have been really bored!

Note

More walking around NYC. Lots more fabric shops, the FIT museum and bookstore and general enjoying the sights and sounds. Fun lookIng at the fabric swatches I've collected; tomorrow I buy.

On a different note: I looked at the results for my class on day 2 at West point. All 5 of us finished within 7 minutes. What a great competition. I hope we have more races like that.

Monday May 3, 2010 #

Note

Spent 4 hours walking around the garment district in NYC today. It was heaven and hell to see so many wonderful fabrics in one place heaven to touch, but hell to know that I can't buy them all. Fun to go into Mood after seeing it so often on Project Runway. Ate at a Korean deli where I ordered by pointing at the food. Fun day.

Long course. Hot again. Concentration was ok, relocating was better than yeserday.

Chose the slowest way to 2 (and wandered a bit looking for it) and went past 11 the first time. But I was right on with my relocating both times.

Really tired by the end, tripping over my own feet. However, I was pleased with my navigation today. Lots more work needed, but I'm on the right track.
11 AM

Note

Mike and I were talking after the meet, and I mentioned seeing him in the woods at Green3 (Red10). He said, how far away were you? I said, about 10 feet. He said he never saw me, standing there in my bright pink and white checked shirt. Don't know whether I should be insulted, or impressed with his concentration :)

Well, I was pretty consistent today. Consistently slow. I was distracted by my shoes.

On the way to the start triangle, I noticed the heel of my left foot was coming loose on the bottom. It kept getting worse, so that by C2, I just tore it off. Moved OK with one spike, one flat, but I couldn't run of course. ANd going downhill was tricky.

Then at C6, I heard some flapping from my right foot! Unbelievable. This one only came off half way, so I was able to have some traction for the rest of the course.

I had mistakes on 2 and 4. I was very good about stopping, thinking, and relocating. Only problem was I was often wrong about where I really was. So, it took a while to find those controls.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this run, given the circumstances.

Map later. Here's a picture of my shoes after the race.

Sprint course at West Point. By the time we started, it was 88 degrees. My body is not used to this yet. Took it easy, jogging about half the time. Clean run, which made me feel good.

The warm weather did make it easier to hang out and socialize. Lots of good conversations today.

(Started my Forerunner about 3 minutes early on each run, but I adjusted the time on AP. That's why the Garmin and AP times don't match.)
