Note

Stressful day at work. For months, they have been threatening to move part of our department over to another group. Today, with no warning, they announced that our whole department has been moved over. The director of the other group (now my boss's boss) is the Devil incarnate. Oh joy.

run/walk (hills) 40:00 intensity: (12:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) + (8:00 @4)

at SMP after work. Had to find a new hill to run, because PNS shuts down at sunset, which means I can't run there after work this winter. Picked a new hill where I can run on the grass by the side of the road. I should be able to run this hill year round.

Longish hill, not so steep, by the model airplane field. Legs were burning at the end of each repeat (about 1:45 at a jog). Maybe after a few weeks, I'll find a shorter, steeper hill? What do other people do?

"long" day vetting at Fleming. First 90 minutes were no fun, due to typical Missouri vegetation. Last hour was better, due to nicer woods and more trail options. I had to drive to different locations in order to get to these controls (drive time not logged). Definitely not race pace today, but I feel the long effort was good training for three-day A meets. Idea is to set a base for the first few months, and move up to race pace by spring. Another fabulous fall day.

Worst part of the day: stepping into the shower, and feeling the sting as the water hit my hundred cuts

Best part of the day: scaring a big buck and a baby bison

"middle" day at Fleming park. Actually, I was vetting controls for next weekend's night rogaine. Hard to see night controls during the day. The woods were exactly as expected. But I also went through one or two patches of nice white woods. Walked through the woods, jogged trails and roads. Picture postcard fall day. Glorious.

re-run of sprint at SarKoPar park. Thought I had the map in the car, but it was a different course. But I had no problem remembering the course as I ran around. Quiet night in the park; only other people were the skateboarders.

run/walk (hills) 35:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (25:00 @3) + (5:00 @4)

at PNS after work. This was tough tonight. Not the workout itself. Just getting started. As I sat in the car pondering the fact that it was 50 degrees and pouring rain, I wondered why I wasn't sitting in my warm dry home with a drink in my hand.

But this was the only night I could do my hill intervals. And it was getting wetter and darker each minute I sat. So I got out of the car and started to move.

But now I am home and dry, sitting by the fire, and enjoying a glass of wine as a reward :)

Note

Can't wait for this election to be over. Living in a "battleground state" means we get tons of junk mail and lots of annoying phone calls. Just listened to a message from Rudy Giuliani. Aren't we lucky ?

(rest day)

After 11 days of training in a row, I'm taking a day off. My only decision today: nap on the couch or on the bed?

Paced a friend through mile 23 of the KC marathon (which is the last big uphill section). Fun to watch the other runners--lots of different running styles. Also fun to offer them some encouragement near the end. Jogged/walked back to the car. Perfect fall day.

So can I now claim that I've run _in_ a marathon? :)

run/walk 1:10:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @3)

at SMP after work. The MTB trails were closed due to recent rains, so I jogged around the mowed fields instead. Even ran part of the HS cross country course. I started by running through the finish chute and covered part of the course in reverse.

My plan for the day was a long slow session. Which was good, considering the course was 7.1 K, it was 85 degrees, and the first day back in the woods. And, unlike other people who plan slow days but still run hard, I stuck to my plan :)

Actually, I had to because my body would not let me do anything more. Was very clean on navigation, which is good. Hit the wall, mentally and physically, at 10. Decided to head straight back to the finish, but could pick up 11, 13 and 14 along the way. Only skipped about 400 meters straight line distance, but it was wooded and I just didn't feel like doing that leg.

run/walk 40:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (5:00 @4)

Moving around at PNS, including some repeats of the rocky hill. I intended to do four repeats, but could only manage 2.
T1: 2:32 HR: 169
T2: 2:35 HR: 170

I was glad I went outside. All the minor (and major) irritations of the week can disappear once I get out into the woods. I grew up playing outside (what mother of 7 _wouldn't_ encourage her kids to play outside :) and love being among the trees.

Note

Thank goodness for This American Life. Their broadcast of the Giant Pool of Money was the first thing that helped me understand subprime mortgages. Now I've spent several hours today listening to other stories and reading the Planet Money blog. Great education for someone like me who has not had formal econ training. Also quite scary.

Lessons learned from last weekend:
1. Overall, my training is going well. I was able to compete three days without getting very tired, or having big mistakes.
2. I need more leg strength for running through the woods (my quads were beat after day 2)
3. I need to increase my endurance, to be able to move fast for three days in a row.

What I plan to do:
1. Fortunately, our local O season is about to start. I should get lots of woods practice in the next 6 months.
2. Quad specific strength exercises.
3. More long slow distance days.
4. Increase training from 3-4-5-6 hr weeks to 4-5-6.
5. Once a month, do a three day training: sprint, middle, long

So today I went for a long hike up and down the hilly horse trails at Wyandotte, to hit items 2 and 3. I didn't want to push the pace, since I've already done my 2 hour run for the month (edit: wrong month. Still need to do one in Oct), and last Sunday was also a 2 hour day.

Two hours seems to be my limit. I'm really impressed with people who do 24 hour rogaines and the Highlander. I was thinking of you all today.

Wow, a free day, with nothing to do on the house! And only a few minutes of training needed to finish out my plan for the week. So I slept late, watched TV, surfed the web, went shopping, read, napped and thoroughly enjoyed my day.

run/walk 50:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (40:00 @3)

at SMP after work. Perfect evening: great temperature, the vegetation is starting to die off, the trails were empty, my legs felt fast and it's the weekend!

weights 20:00 [2]

I haven't done weights in more than 10 days, and I could feel it. Was inspired by an email to join the TRX Fitness Anywhere 31 day challenge. Started with a base line test.

For the record:
atomic pushup: 4
lunge: 16 each side
45 degree row: 17
hip flex: 20
squat: 16

Note

So we've finally listed our house for sale. Scroll down the page to find the link to the 360 degree tour and other photos. Should be up on realtor.com by tomorrow.

Shall we start a contest to guess how many days till we get an offer ? One coworker recently took her house off the market after 4 months; another got an offer after 4 days. Selling time in our neighborhood this year ranged between 9 and 124 days.
