Need to take advantage of the open woods as much as possible in the next week or two, so I went back to Wyandotte today. I did a few controls from last year's course. My legs were tired from yesterday.

Didn't see any bald eagles yesterday or today, so they must have moved on for the year.

Made it all the way around the Wyandotte test course today. And smashed my previous best time. A good day.

Got our taxes done tonight. I don't think we were one of the clients that she tells stories about. We usually exchange travel stories. She takes a big trip each year after April 15th. Tonight the conversation was about Norway (her 2007 trip), Iceland (us) and Croatia (her 2008 trip). And some talk about the tax implications of a new job and a house sale.

at SMP after work. The trails are dry, and open to mountain bikers again. It was a mob scene out there tonight! Saw more people today than I have all winter, combined. And now I know where all the single women in KC should go if they want to meet guys :) Jogging felt noticeably easier tonight, which is good.

Decided to go for a short jog at Tiffany Springs. Haven't been here in years. There are better signs marking the park boundaries now (which say No Dumping, No Vehicles, which are both routinely ignored). Some new trails in the woods weren't so deeply rutted. Knee felt OK; ibuprofen and icing seemed to help.

walk warm up/down 5:00 [1]

Went to Wyandotte today, with a goal of really pushing it on my test loop. I haven't seen the same improvement this year as last; I think I'm being too lazy and not pushing up the hills.

So, I began with a good warm-up session, so I could start hard. I was moving well, with smooth flow through each control.

On the way to 6, I stepped on the end of a branch, which swung up and hit me full on the the knee cap. Sh*t! I knew immediately that my day was over.

Fortunately, I was close to where I had parked, so I walked back to the car, where I took ibuprofen and wrapped the knee in an ace bandage. It still hurt quite a bit, until I got home and could apply some ice.

This is not what I needed this weekend. I had lots of activities planned, both training and around the house. On the other hand, I've been pretty lucky with these kinds of injuries. In all the years I've been orienteering, this is only the second time I can remember where I've gotten injured while out on the course.

Note

Nancy Neuburger thought the best collection of Peeps should be in KC, so she brought me this today. Thanks Nancy!

A busy week means it will be hard to squeeze in all my training hours. So, I went for a brisk walk at lunch.

Another outing on the SMP test loop. I wasn't aiming for a PR today, since I was out so long yesterday. Goal for this weekend was to train back-to-back two-hour days, to build endurance for A meets.

I wasn't too psyched to run today, although the weather was perfect (45-50, sunny). Tons of people in the park today; I had to maneuver around a Dad and kids playing Frisbee in one field. Around 8k, I started to get very tired, and starting stumbling through the woods. As I approached the finish, I saw that I had a chance for a psychological victory of sub-100 minutes, so I really pushed it. Just made it!

I left work a little early, so I could run at PNS. It was nice to go somewhere I haven't been in a while (I'm soooo tired of SMP). Smooth trails made for an easy night.

I decided to copy Tom's training today. Sorta. Except I did it on a real map. In the woods. With real trees and features. In other words, a compass-work/control-picking course at SMP after work. Felt OK physically , not as sharp as I would like on the navigation. That's why we practice...

I left work a little later than planned, so I stopped by Sar-Ko-Par (which is close by) and ran the sprint course before the sun set. Felt better than I expected, although I didn't really push it.

Control picking course at Wyandotte, after we flew home. Almost the same temp in K.C. as in N.O.; weird!

No energy mentally; maybe I should log this as "wandering"? Footing on the north slopes was treacherous: mud over frozen ground. Just as I was finishing and the sun was starting to set, I noticed eight(!) bald eagles soaring overhead. Very nice.
