sprint drills 30:00 [3] 2.34 km (12:49 / km) +30m 12:03 / km

On the band field, bright and early (for me).
There was a coyote there, who was in no hurry to run away when it saw me. In fact it sat and watched me for about 5 minutes.
Weird.

Mid-afternoon memory O at the Arboretum. I stopped at each marker to memorize the next leg. Couldn't get to 4 because the gate was locked. Thought I had found 6 but I was wrong.

cycle 1:25:00 [3] 23.22 km (3:40 / km) +44m 3:38 / km

Original plan for the day was a long run. But I just wasn’t feeling it today. Maybe still tired from long work/travel week, plus conjunctivitis.
So I hopped on my bike instead which was very enjoyable.

run/walk 21:32 [3] 2.73 km (7:52 / km) +6m 7:48 / km

A beautiful sunny day in Scotland (but not warm :) so I had to go for a short jog on the beach.

Then a long travel day from Glasgow to Reykjavik to KC. It was nice to stop in Reykjavik just as Iceland was playing a World Cup match. Lots of energy in the airport (although they lost). Then a new route that went nonstop to KC. So fabulous to go through customs in KC and head home. usually we have to go through the east coast or Chicago.

walk 20:00 [1]

Walk with colleagues along the beach into town for dinner. Beautiful to be so far north on the summer solstice. And it was sunny today for a change!

A short easy shuffle near the famous golf club and the sea. Just enough to help reset my time zone. Stopped to watch some kite surfers (I think that is what they are called)

run/walk warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Up early to get in some training before a long travel day. Mike drew me a course on West Campus. I know this area well but I still made a small mistake.

Off to Scotland for work again. Don’t know how much training I’ll get in this week, but at least I did my weekly orienteering.

Up and out the door first thing to do some sprint training on campus. I did some in and outs on the band practice lot, then a few hill repeats. Home for breakfast.

run race 17 [5] 0.1 km (2:50 / km)

KC Corporate Challenge 100m
17.384
4/45 in F55

Annual Corporate Challenge 100-meter race. It was blazing hot (35C) and full sun so I was sweating a lot as I warmed up. But I felt good, and I had my goal to win a medal this year. The only concern was I wasn't sure when I would start (moved up an age class this year) so I found it hard to time my warm up.

As usual, I have no memory of the start, but I was out front in the beginning. And then I began to feel tight and it was hard to run, and three fast ladies came blazing past me. So I finished 4th, well behind third. I was disappointed in my performance because I thought I was better prepared this year. But it's early in the season, so there's time to improve.

The winner in my heat was my nemesis, another woman named Mary, who runs 15-something. I had hoped she was a different age than me, but it appears we were both born in '63. Shoot!

Also, I had some tightness in my ankle and calf just before the race, which was odd. It was tight for a few minutes, but eventually loosened up before the race and was not a factor.
7 PM

run/walk warm up/down 25:00 [2]

8 PM

run race 22 [5]

I stayed around the track to be part of the sprint relay (100-100-200-400). I hadn't been on a relay team in a long time, so I was nervous. But it turned out to be a lot of fun and I'm glad I did it.

I ran the second 100. My teammate came in first and I think I was in second place when I handed off. This race felt easier than my earlier race (time is an estimate from my Garmin track). Maybe the extra focus of the baton passing distracted me from feeling how hard it was.

I was also distracted by my right calf, which tightened up during the race. Very odd, since it had been my left ankle/calf that was hurting earlier. Wonder if I was dehydrated or lacking in electrolytes? Hanging out in the sun for a few hours was not the best race prep.

aerobics 30:00 [1]

I signed up for a Pound class again, because I liked it and it is helpful to exercise indoors in the summer.

Today was the first class and I was out of practice. I tried to take it easy (first 100m race is tomorrow night) but I got caught up in it. So I decided I should stop halfway through class tonight, and come back on Thursday raring to go.

Crazy day started with hitting a deer full on at 70 mph. I'm fine but lots of damage to my car.

orienteer 13:33 [3] 1.62 km (8:22 / km) +3m 8:16 / km

Control picking on an enlarged Overlook map. I tried to keep moving and read all the trees on the run, but I had to stop once

12 PM

run/walk 1:00:00 [3]

Then a trail run. My Garmin kept shutting off, so I couldn't time my usual 4/1 repeats. So I just winged it. I did turn the watch back on when I thought I had hit 30 minutes, to check the time, and I was only off by 30 seconds! Then I turned around and headed back.
