Night O Champs at Mt Airy. I like night O. So I was looking forward to tonight. Navigation was a bit shaky, but for the most part, I was good about relocating when necessary. Didn't feel fast, but I finished only 37% behind the course winner, so I was pleased with the physical effort.

3: bailed out to the trail, but then ran the wrong direction on the trail. Figured it out, and turned around.
5. I too, was pulled to the water stop at the cliff. Wonder why? But I saw the cliff and figured out where I was, and moved on to my control.
6. Don't know why I got turned around when I hit the field. Just couldn't line up my map and compass. Silly.
6-7-8-9: this was fun and I executed well.
11: walked right below the control. Took a while to admit that I needed to bail out. Could have decided this sooner.

(rest day)

Time for some sewing tonight, since our guild meeting is tomorrow night. Good thing we have monthly meetings to keep me sewing. This month's challenge was to use your favorite fabric from your stash. I wasn't ready to use it yet (still don't know what I want to make with it) so I chose one of my oldest fabrics instead. I think I bought this fabric about 15 years ago. Also pushed myself to try a new technique: made bias binding for the first time ever. I think the bound neckline looks nice. Blouse still isn't finished, but at least I have something to show tomorrow night.

More control checking at SMP today. Beautiful: 50's and sunny. And I got to move through some of the nicest woods today: whee! Pushed the pace a bit today, but not a lot, due to tired legs. Did manage to end with a finish chute sprint. A great way to end a great weekend. I love Thanksgiving weekend, and the opportunity to get out in the woods four days in a row.

Checking out some control locations for the A meet. I took it easy today. Nice day, sunny but cold. Went through some really beautiful sections of woods at SMP; wish all of our woods were this nice.

Note

Mike and went out to dinner and a movie tonight. Sounds like a normal Saturday night for many folks, but not for us. It's been three years since we went to a movie together :)

Back out to Woodridge, this time to run some of the courses. Temp dropped 40 degrees overnight, and the wind was fierce in the open areas. But I was dressed right, and I was pleased with my physical effort today.

I knew this would be tough after a morning run around the woods. Fortunately, my trainer took it easy on me. But my legs are protesting right now. I think I will lie around the house for the rest of the day.

Just a bit of wandering around the woods on west campus, getting used to night stuff again. One good thing about training in Kansas woods: Cincinnati will seem like a walk in the park, by comparison.

A fun day at Rockcrusher with Sandy. She's a talented athlete, but new to O. So we did an exercise where we took turns leading to the next control. But first we would talk about route choice, what we would expect to see along the way, what could be an attackpoint or catching feature. I think she and fun and learned a lot. I was happy for the company, and the chance to move through the woods on a nice fall day.

PTOC night score-O at Bonner Park, 50s and falling.

A fun night, with good turnout. I knew there were 30 controls, and this is a nice, open park, so I thought I had a chance to sweep them all in the one hour time limit. Running pace was good, control order choice may not have been ideal. One bobble at 22 when I was distracted by a reflector on a piece of park equipment. Control 25 was misplaced, and I punched 2 twice. But I managed to make it back with a few seconds to spare.

Followed by a delicious dinner at Arthur Bryant's with Mike. I love how they ask everyone for ID when you buy a beer; makes me feel young again :)

Night O practice at the Overlook. I ran a course from last winter. Took it slow because I was tired after yesterday, and this was first night O in the woods this season. I chose to skip 3 (which had a LOT of climb to the overlook and back).

I have to get used to how things reflect, and remember to have more confidence in where I am (I always stopped too soon). It didn't help that I threw in an extra challenge tonight: no compass. I forgot it at home, along with my magnifying glasses. I think I missed the glasses more :) Although I definitely could have used the compass at 10, and a marker at 11 (the ditch was invisible at night. Apparently, I crossed right over it.

Decided to pack it in after that. One hour was enough, and I was getting hungry.

Running around putting out markers for our Geo Awareness week event on campus. Two years ago, we had about 10 students show up. Last year, we had 50 and I was unprepared. So this year I had plenty of help, and we had 14 show up. Maybe it's odd and even years ? :) Thanks to Paul, Mike, Grover and George for helping.

Practice at Rockcrusher. Forty degrees and raining: my least favorite weather. But I figured it would be good practice for some day when I have these conditions at a real competition, so out I went. Goal today was to move through the woods as much as possible, and avoid the trails.

Don't let the "white" map fool you: this is a map in progress, with very little vegetation shown. When complete, the woods will almost all be colored light green. So, I was very slow as I still have to walk through crappy woods. Wonder when I will have enough leg strength to push through?. Also, I was very tentative on the wet leaves.

I got cold when ever I got near the lake; the wind was fierce today. So sometimes I jogged on trails just to warm up. But other times, I pushed through the woods. 11 to 12, for example, has a tall grass field on the top of the hill. In a real event, I would have run around on the trails, but today I went up and over.

Navigation was OK. 2 was hard; I should have paid more attention to the shape of the reeentrant, rather than just the direction. At 9, I was looking for a root stock (which I never found) when I should have been looking for a distinct tree. I should have been more confident when I found 12 the first time, but it looked more like a stream than a ditch, so I thought I had gone too far. And I punched 14 at a piece of fence; just not one that was mapped, I guess :)

Temps were dropping as I ran, and I started to get really cold near the end, so I just skipped 15 and 16.

Beautiful fall day, sunny, windy and temps in the 70s. I wanted to move around in the woods, to build up my endurance. I went out on a draft map of Clinton, basically lidar with trails. I should have drawn north lines on the map, which can explain part of my debacle leaving 3. Pace through the woods was really uneven, depending on the vegetation. Still needs lots of practice on pushing through the crappy stuff. My route

So happy that I now live in a state with advance voting. For the first time, I voted in the presidential election a week a head of time, with no lines and no fuss. I liked it. Much more civilized than forcing everyone to vote on just one day.

ahr:161 max:179 17c

Local race at Tall Oaks. I signed up for red because I wanted a long practice. But I regretted it as I went towards 1. I forgot how crappy the woods are here: lots of underbrush and thorns. I should have done a shorter course. Also, I forgot to bring any gel shots or food with me on the course, and definitely needed it by the end.
Loss of concentration at 4 and 5 led to me over shooting the control. On 7, I over thought it a bit. I figured, with this being a local meet, the control could be in any reenetrant. So I decided to go across the top and look in every one. But somehow I missed it on the first pass. In retrospect, I should have stayed on the east side until I saw the control across the way (visibility was good here).

By 13, I was getting tired. I was a bit dismayed to see the long leg to 14. But I slogged on to the finish.

Good thing I started early. Later, a park employee decided we shouldn't have controls on the challenge course (14-17), and she just took them down. How frustrating for the late runners to get to the end of the course, and find no controls. Poor PTOC having to have all of these DNFs on the courses.

So thrilled that Garmin will be our sponsor! Great that our local company is finally linked to an O event. Hope you all come out and talk to the rep, and try to win a Fenix.
