worked from home today. Started early, too, so I could go out running right at 4:00. Nice and relatively cool out.

More skills tonight. It was fun. But very strange to finish exercising, and the only part that is tired is your right arm.

Note

I was supposed to train tonight, but I wimped out. (No, Valerie, I'm just kidding. It was a planned rest day :)

The last three times I've stepped on my scale, I've gotten the exact same weight, down to the decimal place. Too weird. So tonight I changed the batteries, stepped on the scale, and....got the exact same weight. This would be good if I was trying to maintain my weight. But I want it to go down, down, down....

Note

So, we have a difference of opinion in our house. When we first saw this house, we noticed that the refrigerator door opened the wrong way. The first thing we did after buying the house was try to reverse the doors, but discovered it couldn't be done on our model. It's one year later and the question is: do we live with the refrigerator as is, or replace it (and donate it)? It is also missing an ice maker, which we'd like to have. Here's a rough sketch of our kitchen. The X is the refrigerator, and the P is the pantry. To the left of the refrigerator is some counter space (bad drawing on my part :)

So, what would you do?
live with it
replace it

Train Like Others
A few years ago, I spent one week writing my logs like others' styles. This month, I'm going to occasionally train like someone else. Today, I replicated Spike's daily commute.

It was tough going up the hills on the way out, especially since I was already tired from riding them yesterday. And the Mississippi hill on the way back was really tough; I had to stop a few times.

Of course, it helped that we stopped for breakfast at the Global Cafe in between rides :)

Mike and I got out to Clinton relatively early this morning. I hadn't run in a while, but I felt good. May have pushed the pace a bit too hard in the beginning; I was tired and stumbling by the end.

Accidentally started the timer after I stopped, so the last lap is bogus

Rode my bike to the Dole Institute to see a photo exhibit about women senators. It was uphill all the way, with a head wind. Tough and hot. But it was fun to have the opposite on the way home :) (Only logging the uphill trip)

For a change, I rowed after I lifted. And I could tell the difference; legs are more tired than usual now.

fence 30:00 [1]

Learned to parry and riposte tonight. And we actually did some sparring, which was fun and confusing. Too many things to keep in mind, for me.

Inspired by the Versus special on great Pyrenees climbs, Mike and I went out to conquer the hills of Kansas. It was hot. The pavement was hot. We rode very slowly. But we got a nice workout while carrying on a conversation.

Earlier in the day, we went to Topeka to do some field checking at Gage Park. I have done almost no field checking in my life, so I was slow. And it was hard for me. You know those people who have to have everything "just so" and take forever and change their minds over and over until it is perfect? Well, that's not me. I'm more of the "that's close enough" type. Which is not good if you're trying to make an accurate O map. I had to walk around and around a feature (and these were easy playground features) before I placed it on the map. And later I would find that I was wrong, if I looked at it from a different perspective. Must consider the implications of this for my o techniques during races...

fence 30:00 [1]

Fencing class. Started to learn some real stuff tonight. Felt really strange to stand there and let someone stab me. Until it was my turn to advance and stab my partner, which felt even weirder. Lots of drills, mostly repetitive lunges. So my right leg got tired. Strange to use only one part of my body.

This was supposed to be a "long" week for me (five hours of training) but I'm feeling a bit burned out (mentally). So I decided to make it a three hour week instead.

And in keeping with that mindset, I changed my training plans for the day. Twice. On the drive home from work, I decided to bike instead of run. And while I was out riding, I cut my ride short(mostly due to darkening clouds).

Hope I get out of this rut soon. A few good nights of sleep should help.

on west campus again. Not many people out this morning, but tons of rabbits.

On my way to NY again. This time is pure fun--my college 25th reunion. I've never been to reunion before, and I'm really looking forward to it. Many of my friends are returning.

I know I will be doing lots of walking in the next few days (up and down Libe slope, in particular) but I'm sure my food and alcohol intake will more than offset any aerobic benefit. So no more training this week.

It was a beautiful night and I was really looking forward to being out in the woods (Well, sort of. On the trails through the woods). But as soon as I started jogging, I felt like doo doo. Took every excuse to walk up even the slightest incline. Weird. Ah well. It was still a beautiful evening. Saw two bald eagles; nice that some of them are staying around all year.

walk (event work) 40:00 [1]

Two OK summer sprints on campus today. Put out markers, ran around setting up, lots of standing around, finally marker pickup. Hot, of course. But a good turnout and lots of fun.

Ugh. End of the work week, sleepy, temps over 90, what was I thinking? I was thinking: the plan for today is 50 minutes including a 40 minute run. So I did. Mostly. It was a slog, and I walked more than usual, and moved very slowly when I did jog. Glad it's over.

Looking forward to the local events tomorrow.

More intervals on west campus. My 405 wasn't charged, so I borrowed Mike's 305. No HR data tonight.

Some engineering students were driving tiny race cars around the parking lot. Fun to watch.
