at PNS after work. I saw a dead turkey and lots of people enjoying a perfect spring evening.

Mike and I went to Wyandotte this morning. I ran along the trail/road below the dam. This was the first time I covered the whole length, so I saw lots of new things, which helped keep me interested during an otherwise boring jog.

some anti-AOWN activities today: weed killer around the landscaping, and Critter Ridder under the front steps. Trying to convince the ground hog to find somewhere else to live. Hope it works.

Feeling worse today. Mostly because I'm back at work :( Work has been pretty stressful lately, which I suspect is what led to me getting sick in the first place.

run/walk warm up/down 12:00 [3]

orienteer race 18:23 [4] 2.5 km (7:21 / km)
(sick)

Relays at ROC. I was determined to do my best for the team this year. In the past, I have dropped us several spots after my leg; my goal was to drop 2 places or less. I loaded up on cold meds, and decided to go for it. After all, what did I have to lose?

My winter training paid off. I was able to keep up a steady slow jog the whole way! I did walk about 4 steps as I needed to double check the map, but that's it. It definitely helped that this was an easy yellow course on flat terrrain (except for one leg). I ran a clean race. Never performed so well in a relay before, so I was very happy.

I had forgotten to start my watch, so I had no idea of my time. When I downloaded, I was shocked. Sub 8 min/k! A first for me, even on sprint courses. Even better, I managed to pull us UP one place in the overall standings. Yeah!

Everyone on the team had good runs this year, which made it even more fun.

orienteer race 46:23 [3] 3.38 km (13:43 / km)
ahr:163 (sick)

Middle Distance champs at ROC. Since I was sick, I decided to not count this as a ranking day, and just go out and walk the course. Also, had to save myself for the relays, which was much more important.

Because I was walking, I had a clean race. Very minor bobbles keeping a straight line one or twice, but that's it. Had to stop twice going up the big steep hill, just to catch my breath. I did jog three times, for about 50 meters each time.

I was so disappointed with being sick. I had trained hard for the last five months, and I was hoping to have my best O performance of the year at this event. I was especially excited by the depth of the field (women on green) which will probably not happen again this year. Ah well, such is life. Have to try to do well at West Point in a few weeks.

Consistency 11.9, time lost 34.3

Ugh! Bad timing: I have a cold. I've been in denial, convincing myself it was just bad allergies. So I lost two days of taking Cold-Eze, which really works well for me.

So, I'll pop those lozenges as if they were candy between now and Saturday, and see how much they can help.

Also one trip to the storage unit. We're way behind Peggy and Nadim.

run/walk 45:00 [2]

Mike and I explored around the Perry Lake trails. It was fun to be on a contour only map, in a new area.

Afterwards, we braved the crowds and cheered the champion Jayhawks as they paraded through downtown.

orienteer 51:00 [4] 4.14 km (12:19 / km)

One last time on the Wyandotte loop. We got lucky this year, and spring is late, so I got an extra two weekends in the woods (although this is definitely the last weekend).

Wasn't trying for a record, since I thought the trails would be wet and sloppy. They were wet, but not in bad shape (the horses haven't been out lately). I really pushed up the final hill, but I just missed a new PR. Still, a good way to end my O training season.

at SMP after work. Long and slow; felt fine. As I drove out, I counted 37 deer in about 0.5 mile. Time for a controlled hunt?

Note

Amazing! The Giants and Jayhawks in the same year! Both win their third title on miracle plays; David Tyree and Mario Chalmers become instant icons. Mike and I might as well give up now; life will never get better than this :)

run/walk warm up/down 35:00 [2]

orienteer 55:00 [3] 5.0 km (11:00 / km)

SMP test loop. I should have listened to my body better. When I arrived at the park, I had an overwhelming desire to take a nap. Instead I spent 15 minutes walking/jogging to wake up.

I knew I was tired from yesterday, so I didn't plan to push for a record today. But I was also sleepy and hungry; not a good combination.

I went about half way, and decided that since it was already Not Fun today, I should stop now before it became Miserable.

Jogged/walked back to the car.

local PTOC meet at Fleming Park. Didn't always push the pace, wasn't always as clean as I wished exiting controls. I'd give myself a B. Beautiful day, last local event of the season.

I entered my splits, and made up splits for Marv (maprunner rerun) in order to calculate my lost time.

run/walk 1:00:00 [3]

I had a meeting in Lawrence today, so I commuted in with Mike. After work, we went for a run on the River Trail. It's smoother than the SMP trails, so I didn't have to watch my feet so carefully. But I did have to dodge as many mountain bikers. Mike joined me at the end, which was fun for me, but probably painfully slow for him.
