run/walk 15:00 [2]

Moved around at Bonner Springs park, checking the map for accuracy, and possible control locations. I was out longer than this, but it was a lot of stop and go, so I'll only log 15 minutes.

run/walk (hills) 20:00 [2]
ahr:143

Since we started this morning's OK urban score O event at the base of the KU campanile hill, I decided to do a hill workout after everyone started (I was the course setter).

Walked up, jogged down, for 5 or 6 repeats. I planned to exercise longer, but my sleep-deprived body felt otherwise.

run/walk 45:00 [3] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Intervals at English Landing. I thought I would run half mile, walk quarter mile. But of course, I started way too fast again, and barely made it through the first quarter mile. So, quarter mile intervals it was.

I've finally figured out my training pace. I decided to go for a long run today, to try to burn off last night's 7 course, 7 wine dinner. I've been doing my slow jogs at a hr of 145-150; my recent short "runs" were >161. So I decided to see if I could last 70 minutes at a faster jog, between 155 and 160 hr.

It worked pretty well. I was feeling fine at 35 minutes, and I had moved into new territory on the Lawrence river trail (I've never made it to the end, yet) But I couldn't find a place to cross over to the other trail (bikes go one direction, runners the opposite, and the out/back trails meet up often). So I kept on going until I found a crossover spot, at around 41 minutes. I still planned to stop jogging at 70 minutes, but I felt OK, so I kept going for a total of 80. Pretty unbelievable; another PR! Maybe I should eat a 7 course dinner more often :)

Then, I finished checking out control sites in the SE part of the Lawrence map. Should be a fun event next weekend.

Running on the trails at PNS. I'm still having trouble judging the pace; I started out too hard. Need more practice.

run/walk 30:00 [3]

Moving around at PNS tonight. I wasn't sure exactly what I would do, but I knew I had to move at running pace. So I ran two loops, with some walking/jogging before, between and after.

It's hard to judge my running pace right now; I need more practice. The HR monitor helped me to try to maintain a steady pace, but I had to consult it often.

My loop times were 10:34 and 11:08; I have no idea of the distance.

A weird "first" for me tonight. I forgot to pack any socks, so I ended up wearing what I had worn to work: knee high stockings (although I rolled them down). A very funny look :)

walk warm up/down 25:00 [3]

run 35:10 [4] 3.0 mi (11:43 / mi)

My goal was to run a 70-minute 10K today. Right away, I knew it was not going to happen.

First of all it was hot, and I was very sleepy. (I can't sleep when Mike is away).

But the main problem was my recent training. I had been concentrating on getting the time in, and never measured distance. Consequently, I was always jogging, not running.

When I started today at my usual slow pace, I knew it wasn't fast enough to hit 70 minutes. So I picked up the pace and started running.

This was tough for me; I'm not used to running at this pace. (I know, it's ridiculously slow for everyone else, but it was fast for me.) So I made it through 3 miles, but then I had to stop.

I guess I should have expected this. I was training to jog, not run. This goal was too ambitious, too soon.

So now I'll train by running over the next few weeks, and attempt the 10K again later.

Just for my own record, my mile times were:
11:48
11:25
11:56

run/walk 40:00 [3]

At SMP tonight. For some reason, this was a mentally tough run, and for the first time, I walked part way. Maybe it was the heat and humidity, or maybe it was the mucky trails littered with downed branches, but either way, I struggled through this session.

Or maybe I just miss Mike. I talked to him today, which was nice. But now he's out of phone contact again until he returns on Sunday. I don't know if I can go that long without talking :)

Still no O Today :(

Weight = 0.925 M

One last (planned) PR, jogging on the trails at PNS. I ran in the evening, which was nice as the shadows were long and the temperature was dropping. I felt pretty good, and the time passed quickly. I even managed to run (as opposed to jog) for the last minute. Not bad, if I do say so myself.

So now I have reached the basic fitness level I was aiming for before Sweden. Next comes a little bit of hill and speed work, and lots of armchair O. Throw in a quick training camp in Laramie, and I should be in pretty good shape for the 5 days.

Since Mike is out of phone range, we're going to be like Peggy and Nadim and exchange info in our logs this week. I forgot to ask Mike where he saw the copperhead at PNS, so I spent a lot more time looking at my feet than usual during this run. Fortunately, I didn't see any snakes.

Jogging around Wyandotte Lake park. The hadest part was trying to avoid the goose poop that covered the causeway.
