Note

Quiet evening, got my hair cut (and colored :) Then Chipotle for dinner in front of the TV (KU basketball game). Normally I wouldn't log such a day, but this morning, Mike and I wondered what we had done on previous Leap Years. So we checked our AP logs. And now I've added this year's entry, for posterity.

orienteer 50:58 [3] 3.17 km (16:03 / km) +87m 14:08 / km

Another spectacular day, 15, sunny and very windy. Decided to do a control picking course at Clinton. Crappy woods, with lots of thorns, so it made sense to walk and pay careful attention. I have difficulties reading stream bed contours, and sometimes my height in a reeentrant, so I tried to practice those today. Did fairly well (no markers or tapes were out)

aerobics 20:00 [2]

Did a bit of extra exercise when I got home, to make me feel less guilty when I sit and watch the Oscars and eat junk food tonight (it's a tradition, I have to do it :)

run/walk 5:00 [1]

Back for day 2 of the AMC Best Picture Showcase. Saw Brooklyn first, which I liked way more than I expected. Went outside between movies, for a bit of exercise in the beautiful weather. I passed two other woman who were also walking. Did not see anyone outside last week.

Second movie was Spotlight, which was excellent but sad to watch.

Third movie was The Martian (which I had already seen) while the fourth was the Revenent (which I didn't want to see). So I left the theater after the second movie.

orienteer 15:00 [1]

I went to pick up Mike at the KU Edwards campus, where he was teaching a class today. We did a map hike on his in-progress map of the campus. Nice day to be outside.

Then we went to REI, which Mike loves, but I find has limited (and expensive) options for women. So sometimes I don't even go inside. But this time I found 4 shirts to buy which were perfect for NZ.

Saw Georgann and Ron at REI, too. No surprise, since we had agreed to meet them for an early dinner at the Bristol (thanks to Ed and Pam for GC for Christmas). Had a wonderful meal to celebrate Mike and Georgann's birthdays.

Mike ran a Fat Line O (FLO) course earlier, and I ran it tonight. I guess it is a "reverse corridor" in other people's logs. It was fun, except for the part that went through a building. Beautiful night, good to get outside after another crappy day at work.

This scan is pretty transparent; it wasn't that clear when viewed at scale (I cropped the map for display here)

sprint drills 10:00 [2] 1.02 km (9:47 / km)

After the O, I did a bit of speed work. This was fun, too. In fact, it was the best part of my day.

Better day at work today; tough arm work tonight.

Tough family day, as well. Finally made the arrangements for my dad's memorial service, which will be on March 19th. It was the best day for my 6 siblings, but we will have to cancel our trip to the US Champs. I'm bummed, on many fronts. Mike is handling it like a trooper.

Note

It's my "long" training week, so I had planned to do quite a bit of exercise tonight. But I had a really bad day, emotionally and physically. Dealing with my emotions, my crazy siblings, my crazy co-workers, my stressful job...
Ate three candy bars at work today!

Then I came home and laid on the bed for awhile, vented to Mike, and then went to sewing guild (which was a nice distraction)

orienteer 1:10:00 [3] 5.48 km (12:46 / km) +125m 11:28 / km

Sandy and I went to the Fitch area. We had contour/vegetation maps, with limited trails. We ran along the trails and stopped every 4 minutes and tried to figure out where we were. Fun exercise, fun visit, nice day.
3 PM

cycle 40:00 [4]

It was colder than I expected and the stiff north wind made it very tough to get back up Kasold Drive. My legs are tired now.

run/walk 20:00 [1]

orienteer 10:00 [1]

Attended the AMC Best Picture Showcase today, with 4 movies. I managed to get out for a short jog between each movie, and went to Stoll Park for a bit of O during the dinner break.
Saw Bridge of Spies, Room, Mad Max and The Big Short

sprint drills 32:00 [3] 2.98 km (10:45 / km) +2m 10:43 / km

Another beautiful warm day, which was nice, but a bit freaky for February. Came home, changed my shoes, and got right out the door. Went to Holcom for some basic sprint drills, just getting the body used to moving faster again.

cycle 15:00 [1]

The weather forecast was for 22 degrees today, so Mike and I planned to do a bike ride together after work. I had a really bad, stressful day, between my family and work. And I left work late, so I wasn't going to arrive home until sunset, and we would miss our ride. I was in a really pissy mood as I drove home. But when I pulled into the driveway, Mike had my bike and helmet waiting for me, He had pumped up the tires and lubed the chain. He even loaned me a small headlamp. What a guy! We went for a short 15 minute bike ride around campus. Not much physical activity but it did wonders for my mood. Thanks Mike!

run/walk 1:20:00 [2] 8.01 km (9:59 / km) +97m 9:25 / km

Trail run at Clinton. Overcast, 6c and very windy. I was glad to get outdoors, and I had planned for a 90 minute run. But after 1 hour, I started looking at my watch and wishing I was done. I had planned one last bit of 15 min out and 15 back. But then it hit me, I can just change my plan :) So I turned around at 7 minutes, and walked the rest of the way back. Just not in shape for a long run, and my motivation disappeared after the one hour mark.

Mike took less than 30 minutes to create a karttapualltin map of the Roth area of KU Fitch preserve. And then we went for a map hike. Nice to get outdoors today but I had a hard time concentrating.

orienteer 40:00 [1] 2.78 km (14:23 / km) +46m 13:17 / km

Beautiful day for our event at Woodridge. Eric s and I put this event together, as part of my goal to start training the next generation to help with events. I got there early to put out markers on the white course. It was chilly to start, but was sunny and 12 at race time. We had a lot of new comers, including 20+ boy scouts (but only 30 official starts, the boy scouts went in groups of 5). Everyone seemed to have a good time, and lots of folks asked for a list of upcoming events.

We got home, unpacked the car and were starting to relax and enjoy a Valentine's Day dinner. Then we got The Call. My dad had been in hospice for a week or so, and we knew the end was near. He passed away this evening. I'm still a little numb, but Mike is taking good care of me.

walk 30:00 [1]

Mike and I went for a hike at KU Fitch property. We followed along on a map that Mike is making, and explored a new trail. It was cold, but fun. Good to get outdoors for a brief time today.

yoga 30:00 [1]

I got to the gym a few minutes early, so I had time to read my texts. One of which was from my trainer, canceling because he was sick. So I went home and worked out in the basement. It is much harder to push myself, plus I don't have any weights heavier than 10 lbs, but I made do. Followed by my usual weekly You Tube yoga session.

Mike drew me a control picking course at Clinton. I was tired from yesterday, and I didn't sleep well, so I though this would be the best practice. I walked the whole time, but tried not to make any mistakes. Don't know why my track didn't start until after the 3rd control. Messed up 4 because I was startled to hear Siri talking to me in the middle of the woods (I didn't get that ?) Another beautiful day, 10 and sunny. Trails were a bit muddy.

Score O event at Lake Jacomo (Fleming Park) today. Beautiful weather and good turn out. The woods are totally crappy, and I should have known better, but I kept trying to cut corners and go cross country. this was always a waste of time, since the markers were all close to trails. I should have thought like the person who hung the markers, and look for the easiest way in. Also, I tried to get cute and get ahead of an adventure race couple, which lead to mistakes at 20 and 18. I'm most bummed about the mistake at 15, when I directly approached the control, didn't see it, and decided to look elsewhere. We had 90 minutes and I made it back with 2 minutes to spare, having gotten all but 3 controls. I did a very good job of moving all the time, and I pushed the pace. My legs are tired now.

Short jaunt around Holcom park, doing a bit of Runner's World Speed 101 workout. Time to start preparing for sprint season.

Then came home and had a glass of champagne to celebrate earning the Southwest companion pass (good for free travel until Dec 2017)!
