I headed to KC today for some history and exploring. Started with a bit of O at English Landing Park (I think Lewis and Clark stopped here). I wasn't motivated to do much, just walked to a few controls (still messed up 12 even though I was counting poles). I enjoyed looking at the river and the beautiful big old trees in this park.

Then I went to downtown KC to the Rivermarket area. Had lunch at A Taste of Brazil because we were supposed to be in Brazil today at the South American champs. Nice chat with the owner who moved from Brazil four years ago. Delicious food, very tender meat and interesting cheese puffs.

Then I walked around City Market, which has many ethnic groceries (and a farmer's market on weekends). I wish we had come here more often when we lived in KC, but it always seemed a pain to find parking. Not today.

I had lots of fun looking at all sorts of new (to me) things today. Made my brain feel like I was traveling (desperate times call for desperate measures). I even bought some cool foods to try.

It was also fun to be walking around a city again. Sidewalks, traffic, construction, buses. Things I don't come across very often in Lawrence. The only thing missing was throngs of people. There were some people, most wearing masks (we all wore masks in the shops).

I walked around a bit looking at historical markers in the neighborhood, and walked out on the Town of Kansas Bridge. Lewis and Clark stopped here, too.

My theme for the day (unplanned) seemed to be historical transportation. My next stop was Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm. Ironically, this is very close to my office (and Mike's) but I had never been. I just walked around the outside of the house and looked at historical signs.

Next, I took a break from history and went to a place I've heard about for years but never visited: the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. I got there shortly before closing, so I had to do a quick tour. But it was lovely and quite nice. I'll go back soon and bring Mike this time.

One last historical transportation stop: and old Standard Oil company town next to the train tracks. Only five buildings are left in the Redel District. And I could only see them while driving by. But getting there took me through unusual areas of Johnson County that I hadn't seen before, with a real mix of old and new houses and farmland. Quite fun.

A nice day, got me out of the house and out of my mental rut.
