run race 17 [5] 0.1 km (2:50 / km)

KC Corporate Challenge 100m
17.384
4/45 in F55

Annual Corporate Challenge 100-meter race. It was blazing hot (35C) and full sun so I was sweating a lot as I warmed up. But I felt good, and I had my goal to win a medal this year. The only concern was I wasn't sure when I would start (moved up an age class this year) so I found it hard to time my warm up.

As usual, I have no memory of the start, but I was out front in the beginning. And then I began to feel tight and it was hard to run, and three fast ladies came blazing past me. So I finished 4th, well behind third. I was disappointed in my performance because I thought I was better prepared this year. But it's early in the season, so there's time to improve.

The winner in my heat was my nemesis, another woman named Mary, who runs 15-something. I had hoped she was a different age than me, but it appears we were both born in '63. Shoot!

Also, I had some tightness in my ankle and calf just before the race, which was odd. It was tight for a few minutes, but eventually loosened up before the race and was not a factor.

run race 22 [5]

I stayed around the track to be part of the sprint relay (100-100-200-400). I hadn't been on a relay team in a long time, so I was nervous. But it turned out to be a lot of fun and I'm glad I did it.

I ran the second 100. My teammate came in first and I think I was in second place when I handed off. This race felt easier than my earlier race (time is an estimate from my Garmin track). Maybe the extra focus of the baton passing distracted me from feeling how hard it was.

I was also distracted by my right calf, which tightened up during the race. Very odd, since it had been my left ankle/calf that was hurting earlier. Wonder if I was dehydrated or lacking in electrolytes? Hanging out in the sun for a few hours was not the best race prep.
